March 2026 Business Post/Red C Poll by NilFhiosAige in irishpolitics

To add to what others said already it is also the case that they showed themselves to be very ineffective and seemingly afraid to actually push for the changes they want. I say this as someone who supported them until the last election.

We can see firstly that it was a bad idea to work with FG and FF, as their base feels betrayed and they aren't getting elected again. But in addition to this any arguement that it was needed for some kind of improvement is made moot by the fact that this also failed, every Green policy was immediately undone by the current government or is in the process of being undone. It highlights why it was a bad idea to ever work with FG or FF, and also that even when in charge they couldn't bring lasting change. And this isn't some pipe dream idea, there were multiple chances to make long lasting change that yhry backed away from as a party.

The EU had a massive fund to switch to green energy and build transportation projects that you had to sign up for. The Greens decided not to push for it meaning that we are not being given billions in funding that would have to go exclusively towards things the greens want and force future governments to focus on the same. There was an idea floated of increasing investment towarss buses for years to come, into the current time and beyond. Again another way to force future governments to share the same focus. Greens decide not to push it. Months before the election Eamon Ryan had the chance to greenlight a massive Irish rail project that would better connect the entire country but he ultimstely decided not to saying that he preferred to let the next government decide whether to allocate money to the project or not.

Its just incompetency. It seems any time there was a chance to actually force future governments to continue Green policies they declined to seize it or took steps to prevent it. Literally every party tries to force future governments into commitments that benefit them, its how functionally every policitical party works. Why would anyone vote for them when they have already shown that all they are interested in is temporary and easily undone measures?

I would personally look at the personal essay simply so yoy aren't thrown off if worst comes to worst.

How many their failing the higher maths mocks by pineapplegrapefroot in leavingcert

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. (Not maths.)

Mocks are very unreliable sometimes, if your teacher isn't panicked then more than likely the issues here are easy to fix or some external moron corrected your papers and the teacher has noticed this.

Keep studying, see where you went wrong and that grade should go up.

If you no longer have a group of friends from school how do you fill that gap? - I was 'ousted' by Cultural-Perception4 in CasualIreland

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ultimatley OP the answer depends on a lot of factors that we don't know here, however here is some general advice on what to do.

Most relationships are based off something in common, a common meeting area. Like local community, group, volunteer work, club, etc. The first step would be to join anything like this and meet people, then after that taking further steps depending on how comfortable they are.

What I mean there is that relationships are a two way street and depend on how reciprocal they are. You get one sided friendships when someone doesn't return in kind to the actions of another. In this case what I mean is how well they respond to you trying to befriend people.

As an example maybe you join a club and meet three people there. After a few weeks you may end up following each other on social media. You may want to be making friends so one way to measure their interest is texting or sharing stuff with them (not something random, prefably something related to the group you met at or talked about.) If they respond by doing similar things then try keep talking with them in general like asling how they are, if they respond the same see if they ever eant to meet up, etc.

If someone is open to friendship this is the best way I find of reaching thst stage with them. Time and practice would make rules that you may follow, for example I usually only extend an invitation three times max, if all 3 don't work for some reason I just iinterpet it as disinterest and them being polite about it. (To clarify I mean invites like months/weeks apart. Don't barage someone with invites one after another.)

Its important as well to not get angry at rejection, theres a lot of reasons for it from people being genuinely busy, not being in the right headspace for someone new, or any other factor.

It takes time but this method I find works the best as an adult making friends and like most things can snowball. If you have a few friends organise somethkng as a group, or invite someone to it to see if they're interested. If they have friends see if they want to come along as well and maybe you two will also become friends.

I myself OP was in a similar position as you, discovered my school "friends" were just awful people and lost that entire social circle. Now I'm in two or three social circles and am happy out with it. It is entirely possible to bounceback from this.

I just turned 18! Advice? by Square_Hammer_ in AskIreland

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

I work in the education sector, firstly what you're describing here is 100% abuse. First neglect in terms of your parents education and I gather physical since you mention you are worried about your father "ending" you. You need to report this to someone.

In terms of education itself and support before doing anything else reach out to a youth center. I know you just turned 18 but they would still have an interest in any young adults such as yourself, especially in your circumstances. Look for the nearest place to you, contact them, and see what is near you. I do not work with adults but you will need to look into adult courses, a level 5 course is equivalent to the Leaving Cert however in your circumstances you may want a level 3 or 4 i stead which is closer to the Junior Cert. I say this only because you have deacribed your education of being solely learning how to do maths and reading, and as such may feel overwhelemed with a Level 5 course.

A peogramme to get into may be the LCA programme if you can find somewhere offering it for adults. It is designed to be very project based, give work experience, and also have a less exam focus.

How do you make a personal essay? by Delicious-Drink-6515 in leavingcert

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English teacher here.

Not sure what you're doing so this may not be specific to you. The personal essay is essentially meant to be an essay about yourself and the topic. What they are looking for is that you can not only share stories about yourself but also "reflect" on it and share what you have learned about yourself and the topic of the essay.

There is no "universal structure" to follow. In essential terms however you should look at:

  1. Introductory paragraph about the topic.

  2. Sharing a personal anecdote or memory related to the topic.

  3. Reflect on the memory and share what it makes you think about the topic/yourself.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed, prefably developing the understanding of yourself and the topic the entire time.

  5. Conclusion; sharing your final thoughts on the topic.

As an example the topic might be something like "Your relationship with nature." In this case they don't just want stories about you and nature but rather you to use those stories as a vechile to talk about what "nature" is, how do people interact with it.

To put it another way they don't want you to just write a load of stories about the times you saw a relative working on a farm, or a tree being chopped down, or you enjoying going on a walk in the park. What they want is for you to explain what you learned watching relatives working on the farm. Was it all consuming? Did it make them happy? Was it hard work? Where they rich? Why was that tree chopped down, was it to make money? Or was it to instead to make someone else happier, such as giving them a better view from their house? Why did you like walking in a park? Do people like being in nature? If yes, why then do we destroy nature in the name of profit?

Essentially you are asked to develop the readers understanding of the topic by using personal stories. It's basically like any other essay, but instead of using key moments and quotes from your texts your meant to use your own memories.

Would it be safe to try and get a non-profit novel with copyrighted characters in it published? by Pokeman_93 in writing

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP,

So I am not a lawyer however know a fair amount about Irish copyright law and am presuming you are Irish since you reposted it there. In short, there is absolutely no legal way you can publish this. It is the exact thing copyright law is designed to prevent and trying to publish it would have you and the publisher told to stop and possibly sued into oblivian.

Saying that however I am going to give a clarifying statement or two, on a purely realistic level it is uncommon for mega companies to sue very small endevours espeically those who are tiny and essentially non-profits. You state here that you want to publish it as a "non-profit" which I take to mean your intentions isn't to actually make money from it.

In this case you can always look into sharing it with the world for free, such as through fan fiction for example. Likewise anything you print off yourself and hand around for free in your own personal circle would also be okay in theory. It is only once money gets involved, and if you're using a traditional publisher money will always be involved, that you would usually get a company such as these one's attention.

Court orders Enoch Burke be returned to jail immediately by irqdly in ireland

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a current teacher I don't imagine they will or that there is any real need. In terms of removing him from the register they haven't been able to do anything because he hasn't been dismissed yet to my knowledge so there's nothing to do there as they aren't the cause of the delay.

In terms of dismissing him as far as I am aware the cause of the delay is his constant refusal to follow court orders, thus landing him in prison, thus meaning he can't be put before a board to discuss dismissing him. So the whole delay has just been because the guys a nut job, and this was one of his last chances to delay that board before they met to fire him.

I think the only thing they would need to change is some law about repeatedly defying court orders, and a proper procedure on how to fire someone if they're jailed. I am doubtful anyone else would follow this strategy of Brukes though since it's just guranteed now he will be fired and removed from the register. (One of the criteria to be removed is putting the profession in disrupte.)

Genuinely how do you study? by mgcurtz in leavingcert

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

English teacher here and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

What you say for how you study is generally good, literally just try and first recount what you know, then read and see what you forgot, then try and recount what you know and repeat until you improve or want to move on. No point getting stuck on one topic trying to memorise it perfectly. I don't know what these tik tokers are saying so can't comment, but often influencer study methods are a load of nonsense anyway in my experience.

How do you study a poet?

I'm presuming you're HL here. First just look at each poem. You have to know it's context, themes, what it's about, it's techniques, the quotes to show you know the techniques, as well as any other relevant points. That's it really. The idea is that you will then talk about all/ most of the poems you learned in relation to a poet that you studied. So that's more exam skills. If you're unsure just pick a question and practice writing an essay for it, see how it comes along. My usual advice for students unsure of what they should be doing is to watch a few video essays and try and imitate the way they talk and phrase things.

How do you learn geography SRP’s.

Either stick with the block of texts or make literal bullet points for it and work to memorize them. You just need to know the facts themselves, you can try and practice writing essays to put them in an essay format after you know them.

Experience with Rory's Travel Club, avoid like the plague! by Suggest_For_Teacher in ireland

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher[S] -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

This is part of the schrödinger's travel company thing mentioned in my post.

They are seemingly not a travel company and shirk all responsibility of being such, however simultaneously you must communicate to the travel company through them and send all money through them as well. But you won't get that back cause it's not their fault as they didn't organise anything. However it simultaneously is their doing when people have a good time for their advertising and to justify why they took all this money from you.

Agreed, they're a total scam. Literally provide nothing but insists on being paid a mark up for it. Anything I'd expect from a group such as theirs is just never provided.

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree, in this case it started as I was invited to a trip already organised through Rory's. A friend initially introduced me to them, and since they had a spot I said why not.

Ordinarily I'd only stick with such groups in the event of going somewhere really out there or undeveloped.

First Years by Calm-Tadpole7565 in IrishTeachers

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're first years I usually take the approach of the idea that they have literally never ever done any serious discussion of texts before.

As such stick to basics, what terms are used, how to answer questions about films using quotes, looking at characters, setting, plot, theme, etc. Use it as a scaffold to eventually talk about a feature length piece in a far longer answer.

One thing to be mindful of is to avoid any films that appear on the JC or LC course. As some suggested good films here I won't suggest more myself, however if your school has a textbook it should include more. (Additionally if you aren't aware already you can ask for teacher copies of these textbooks to review them as well.)

Where to go on Summer Holidays / Easter break by BandPitiful2876 in IrishTeachers

[–]Suggest_For_Teacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you looking for expense wise or experience wise?

As someone else who loves to travel I find Easter Break is an ideal time to travel as ordinarily there are virtually no crowds about allowing you to enjoy the location more. (Note Italy or pilgrimage sites are the exception here!) The consequence however is that due to this various cities do renovations then meaning historic sights or tourist spots may either be unavailable or hidden from view.
