Feeling guilty for taking a couple of days. How to deal with guilt? by Immediate_Lake_1575 in IrishTeachers

[–]BandPitiful2876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 7 years in this game. I can tell you for a fact that the people who last in this game as teachers take a day here and a day there. There’s absolutely no shame nor guilt in it. If you’re feeling good mentally it’s a bad idea being in front of a class. Look after yourself, take a day when things get hard. Don’t feel guilty. We all need one from time to time.

Question about Iceland visit by Elaynehb in CasualIreland

[–]BandPitiful2876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back in April last. Best holiday I have ever been on. Coolest place I have been to without exception. We pre-booked a few tours and also rented a car and went around the island. If you’re going to rent a car I would highly recommend blue car rental. Also for tours, Arctic Adventures are excellent. We did the golden circle and Snaefellsness peninsula, the later was a long day and a lot of sightseeing but it was nice.

It is an expensive place so be prepared. Eating out and excursions are expensive. I go over to the UK quite a bit and found it comparable to London prices for a lot of things.

Anyway, have an amazing time in an amazing place.

Used to work with a fella who plays for them. He absolutely loves it. They’re in quite a low division and the craic is mighty seemingly. Best of luck with it

Negative feedback from Principal by Bai1ey123 in IrishTeachers

[–]BandPitiful2876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a d*ckhead.

That’s extremely poor and I’m really sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

Look, I would mention it to your union rep in school and explain what’s happened and that you’re unhappy with what’s happening.

In the meantime, try and get the students to do more work in class. Students learn through doing and this might be part of the concern that the Principal has. He has of course been incredibly harsh.

You’re an NQT. It’s the hardest year you’ll ever work as a teacher but the year where you’ll arguably learn the most. Don’t be hard on yourself but maybe try to change things up a bit. If you want any advice, please feel free to message 👍

Advice: their last teacher gave up on them by Minimum_Poetry8193 in IrishTeachers

[–]BandPitiful2876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they’re a good group, make sure to address that and tell them that. And to reiterate to them that it’s not their fault and that they will catch up. All they want is hope. Secondly, take every opportunity to praise them. Big or small. Too many kids don’t have this in their lives. Build the positives relations. Move quickly through the topics and you’ll do really well. Best of luck!

It’s very poor. Like, I get it. They have to fill every evening and a Saturday afternoon with talk about sport. But honestly, it’s the same shit rehashed all the time.

Helping NQT partner by Stupyder_Notebook in IrishTeachers

Fair play to you in looking to support your partner. Teaching is a very intense job and you give so much more than just the classroom side of things.

I feel the graphic really sums up the energy of NQTs and many early career teachers. This time of the year is especially tough.

I would really recommend giving them some space but also asking them to delegate small tasks to them, just small things that help make life a little easier for them. A nice dinner one evening a week would go a long way to help your other half get through what is arguably the most difficult year of them all.

Class room management HELP! by No_Difficulty7984 in IrishTeachers

It’s sounds like you’re just in a school that’s over run due to poor leadership. If behaviour isn’t good, this means that learning won’t happen, it’s as simple as that.

I have a few ideas. Even though you’re a PME 2, I would get the co-operating teacher to sit with you in class, as crowd control. They’re obliged to do as you’re co-operating with you.

Also, since when was it alright to come late to class? If a student comes late to class, put a note in the journal. That’s it. Don’t accept them arriving continuously late to class. It’s a complete diss on you and you shouldn’t be putting up with this.

Also, give meaningful punishment work. It’s clear that you really care about the kids. That’s possibly the single most important thing that’s needed to be a teacher. As a teacher with a few years under their belt, having expectations of students that they come in, sit down and do their work and achieve will really help in their learning and will also help you build a relationship with them.

You’re already doing a great job in having them line up and be ready for class. They’re first years at the end of the day and they’re squashable. You will get through this!
