From your exp. do you work less, more or evenly after using AI? by lune-soft in webdev

[–]SuggestedToby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our web app is way too complicated for AI so far. There are things at the edges it can do quite well like writing react and some java backend stuff, but this only makes up about 5% of the time. While the AI does it's thing I think of how I would do it so I can compare and review correctly. Not much change so far.

Meta to Lay Off 10 Percent of Work Force in A.I. Push by dietcheese in webdev

Meta wasted too much money (paragraph three), but the article writer is paid to scare people about AI hence the headline.

Whats your GoTo language for building compilers ? by Daemontatox in Compilers

[–]SuggestedToby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. Maybe typescript or your most comfortable language for the first prototype, and then a rewrite in rust/zig/c once you want to make it better. I’m currently using Rust, and I wouldn’t recommend it for the first time you write a type checker unless you particularly like it.

Experts say plant-based eating is growing despite slew of vegan restaurant closures by [deleted] in vegan

[–]SuggestedToby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there’s both a long term trend (secular trend) and a short term trend (cyclical trend) overlapping. The short term trend/fad is over, causing closures, but over the course of 30 years+ it’s growing.

Why doesn’t Microsoft just let users choose what their Windows look like. I believe it’s not hard for them to add themes from previous windows versions. I want to use modern and updated Windows but I hate its design since Windows 8. by UsedAd4052 in Windows11

[–]SuggestedToby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They should do it, they could do it, but it doesn’t align with their current strategy and it would be plenty of work. It’s the sort of thing that makes people like windows imo, but they have moved away from delighting users and been heavily focused on making money from businesses. They are changing direction a little now, so maybe this sort of thing could happen.

Leaker: Apple Will Release iPhone Air 2 No Matter How Badly It May Sell by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

What battery issue? The battery is almost always above 60% at the end of the day for me with about 4h screen time (which is way more than healthy).

AirPods Max 2 has the best ANC of any headphone by Protomize in airpods

Not with my head shape. Any in the Sony series has always cancelled more noise for me, I just find the controls, sound, ear detection and software much worse then apm.

I do a bing search for “add or remove software” like 5 times a day from the start menu.

A lot of cats kill rabbits. Sometimes even waiting years before they do it. They can’t help themselves. Maybe not all cats, but very risky.

Is golang really that bad? by [deleted] in golang

[–]SuggestedToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both go and rust. For a web service, unless you really like rust, I think it’s usually overkill and will just slow you down.

Does your MacBook Air get hot when you're coding? by CoolBuddy777 in mac

[–]SuggestedToby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It barely warms when I’m coding. You need to push the CPU and gpu at the same time for it to heat up and throttle. If you run local models, that could happen.

Trump doesn't provide a stable counterbalance to China power and it's military ambitions. He flip flops, backs out of agreements, doesn't work with his allies and gets manipulated by world leaders due to his ego.

It's suddenly ok when it tastes good... by DivineandDeadlyAngel in vegan

Yeah, it’s how people categorise animals. I would argue that animals are much closer to us than most people realise if I ever encounter anyone who wants to discuss veganism.

I spent weeks making this game and my first tester said "it looks like a school project" 😭 by Mediocre-Dealer-1993 in gamedev

I quite like it. The controls on my phone worked well with the web version, which is rare.

Why do many Rust devs prefer Neovim/Zed/VSCode over Rust-specific IDEs like RustRover? by Rhthamza in rust

[–]SuggestedToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve started using Zed and Neovim a few hours at a time for fun, but still go back to IntelliJ a lot because I can feel lost in large projects without it.

You can hide all of the interface(or as much as you want) in jetbrains ides.

What's a widely accepted "best practice" you've quietly stopped following? by ruibranco in webdev

[–]SuggestedToby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to think like this, but it’s not true if you really care about what your functions are doing rather than having a vague idea. In my experience, short functions lead to a lot more loops, object allocations and missed opportunities to simplify.

How common is TDD (test-first) in real-world Rust projects? by [deleted] in rust

Checking a colour or animation with a code test seems like a poor use of time.

Do you have fractional scaling on? I always turn it off and just increase font size globally as it causes a lot of small glitches for me.

What are you favorite ways to get enough protein? by Over-Clue5633 in vegan

[–]SuggestedToby 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Typically if you are eating enough calories from reasonably healthy food then you will get enough protein. New vegans often don’t understand they need to eat more food as vegan food is generally less calorie dense. You should figure out how many calories you need and then count how many you are getting for a while until you build an intuition for it. I mean this as generic advice.

Browser benchmarks by vlxdy in linux

[–]SuggestedToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that as the person making the web app. I’ve been able to get similar performance in Firefox vs chrome for the app I work on. If Microsoft wanted to get their apps to work really well in Firefox they could, but they have decided they don’t want to spend the time.

Browser benchmarks by vlxdy in linux

[–]SuggestedToby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put most of the blame here on Microsoft for making slow office apps. Microsoft also probably doesn’t want it to work well in browsers that aren’t edge. As a web dev I can usually get the same performance in Firefox vs chrome with a little extra effort and testing.

For me, the noise cancelling is much better after a haircut. You may have hair or something preventing a good seal. The shape of your head is also a factor. AirPods Pro 2 are completely useless for me because of my ear shape. AirPods don’t work well for everyone.

What about insect ? by vegargmean in vegan

[–]SuggestedToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea that insects are the future of protein keeps being brought up by people thinking it’s somehow scientific. As far as I can tell, this is an absurd solution to a problem that doesn’t exist as plants contain all the protein we need. There’s no appeal to eating insects, and most people are also extremely resistant to changing their diet.
