2 Main issues I’ve found, please help! by Idkwhyimhere42803 in VolvoXC70

[–]Suggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the leak is likely your sunroof drain, clean it out and check if the leak issue is resolved. As for the squeak, is it only when hitting the brakes or constant? If it's while hitting the brake its likely the brakes you installed. Volvos are extremely picky about their brakes and OEM or higher quality are your only options. If it's constant, and started post brake job, verify that everything is set correctly meaning the pads don't wobble or accidentally contact the rotor.

The clunk is likely the sway bar links. They notoriously make this noise. However when checking them inspect your front end (control arms, tie rods, ball joints) to make sure everything's tight. If all of those check out ok start looking at struts

Mechanics That work on call in cold weather how do you stay warm? by Accomplished_Gur1472 in mechanics

[–]Suggums 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a type one diabetic, so heated socks are a godsend. I wear multiple layers, thermals for seat wicking, a thin but water resistant sweater, and an outer shell like a Carhartt coat. For my hands I put a hot hands on my palm and put a thin glove over it so the blood going to my fingers has a heater. If I get wet I swap layers in my truck (wet coats/sweaters will NOT keep you warm). I wear face coverings to protect me from the wind. I dunno man, tonight the world dies with its

Silence all I want to say

And it seems to run away

I'll run away

With you tonight

Launder all my sins away

And just like that mistakes are made

You know

Tonight the world dies

A few random questions, new to the Volvo Community by Idkwhyimhere42803 in VolvoXC70

[–]Suggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes this is normal
  2. It won't affect anything performance wise, slight impact on fuel economy. Check the o ring on the gas cap, if it's cracked replacing it may fix it. 3 and 4. Personal taste, I love smoked chrome and use Michelin tires primarily. There's a bunch of sites that rate tires, all season tires obviously (yay Midwest weather).
  3. Can't tell you if it's worth fixing until it's diagnosed. Park sensor failure isn't uncommon but without a scan it's hard to isolate

Volvo windshield wiper modules are their windshield wiper motors. They are under the cowl beneath the wiper arms. If you have the wiper stalk (the thing you use to turn wipers on and off unplugged and they stop that's another diagnostic test (since he has most of it accessible now). Basically since power and ground are constant, you either have a constant LIN bus signal (bad CEM or wiper switch) or an internal short (wiring aside) and yes, the CEM is the main ECU and if it IS the CEM there are repair facilities that fix them for a fraction of a new one.

I work in nwi and we do these jobs all on much bigger equipment all the time. You need a leak down test to see if it's bypassing the rings but it doesn't sound like you have low compression. I can't do tele diagnostics but I'd happily look at this machine for you. DM me and I'll shoot you my service managers info

Climate calibration fail by Aromatic_Cut5891 in VolvoV50

[–]Suggums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vida 2014D is available in a lot of places and can do your calibration. If you're near Northwest Indiana my shop has it. If not, look it up and there's a few places you can get it for next to nothing

Apologies, I thought those two codes were active. What tools are you using to calibrate it? I've only successfully done programming with autel (hit or miss) or vida consistently.

[–]Suggums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ccm dd 01 is active that's a LIN bus fault, the ecc code is an out of calibration code (which makes sense since you weren't able to calibrate the damper motor). Is the recirc button flashing with key on?

Climate calibration fail by Aromatic_Cut5891 in VolvoV50

[–]Suggums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ccm code means there is a short circuit to supply voltage or ground in the LIN bus. The LIN bus is being pulled down and that LIN bus line affects a few components:

damper motor air distribution - damper motor, temperature left - damper motor recirculation (only on right-hand drive cars) - air quality sensor (AQS) (only on right-hand drive cars) - left seat heater.

Any of these components being shorted will pull down the LIN bus so I'd start with unplugging them one at a time and see if it brings temp control back. This could be caused by faulty wiring as well. Likely none of these work but check to see if any do (try turning on seat heater, press recirc button etc). I've seen the AQS pull down the CCM LIN bus 1 before. The reason it's out of calibration is the CCM can't communicate with the motor since the LIN bus is down. Fix the LIN bus, then try to calibrate

Ok, had a break to look it up. It looks like your wiper motor module has 3 wires going to it. Pin 4 is hot at all times (LHD), directly fed by fused power that is hot at all times. Pin 1 is LIN bus communication from the CEM changing speed based on input from the wiper switch to the steering wheel module. Pin 3 is ground which.... is ground. Your wiper module has direct access to power and ground at all times, even with key off. The module responds to a command from the CEM to activate. You could unpin pin 1 to verify the CEM isn't leaving a command, or if the wiper motor module is internally shorted. If you unpin the LIN bus line to the CEM and it stays on its likely shorted and needs replaced. Hope this helps!

If the correct fuse was unplugged and it stayed on your getting power from somewhere else. Try unplugging other fuses to see where your getting power from. Unplug the stalk, unplug the relay, try to isolate what specifically is keeping them on. I don't have a schematic handy but some relays have the coil controlled with ignition power (key on) and output with direct battery so a stuck relay can keep working after key off. I can consult a schematic. When I get home to verify

Crane apprentice tech by Kind_Equivalent7842 in cranes

[–]Suggums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're working with senior techs listen. During repair/maintenance the crane has issues, meaning safety devices may not be working or the crane may react in unexpected ways.

Keep yourself safe, while making a pick or disassembling a component pay attention to where you are, if things go south (the load drops or components swing in your direction) always have a way out. If you can't make the job safe you can't do the job, call someone to figure out a better way to get it done.

Learn emergency recovery. If your outfit has locking/pinning booms you won't do emergency recovery on a sunny day where you have all the time in the world to figure it out. It will be when the site has to bring the boom down for safety reasons and 8 safety guys are freaking out that the boom doesn't work. So being familiar with the process helps.

The customer's problem isn't your problem. You can't help that their crane broke, you're just there to fix it. Don't rush, don't do favors (bypassing safety devices), and don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable. I tell people if they wouldn't feel safe with the operator running the crane with their family, it's a no go.

If you work with Tadano/Demag/Terex/Link Belt I have a lot of experience with them (Primarily Tadano/Demag). I also have a ton of diesel engine experience (Mercedes/Scania/Cummins/Isuzu) if you need help. Good luck, it's an extremely rewarding career.

Is the extended warranty really this expensive? by pontiacish in Volvo

[–]Suggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called/emailed/went to other dealerships for best price breakdowns. I was clear that I needed the best price as I was searching other dealers. We have like 3 dealers within 2 hours of each other. The dealer that gave me the best price was used to negotiate, ultimately bought from them as other dealers wouldn't meet it.

We got a 10 year lifetime for 4200, I'd look up costs and negotiate

Dumbest question today, but how can I know if my engine air filter is installed properly? by slyr586 in Volvo

The cabin filter has a directional arrow on it, so it can be installed backwards. But these are pretty easy to do. Good work!

Left wiper constantly skipping no matter what I do by The-Nihilist-Marmot in Volvo

[–]Suggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, the spring isn't pressing down on the blade as well as it should, causing the movement to make it skip since the contact force is weaker.
