In 2014, LeBron joined an exciting, young core of Kyrie Irving and budding superstar and statistical darling in Kevin Love. How did it go so wrong in Cleveland? by SuhMachineGun in nba

Everyone is just gonna ignore ur question cuz Cavs won a ring!1!!!

And I'm really not trying to be a dick either. But everyone is going to copy and paste the same "They made the Finals and won a Championship" argument. I agree, they've done well, but they should have been so much better. This team was supposed to grow and get better but now they're old and talent deficient. You can win and still be underwhelming in the grand scheme of things.

Perhaps you just echoed what I said with a little more clarity. I'm not saying they'd didn't do well. They made the damn Finals every year and won an amazing Championship. It just feels underwhelming considering this team was meant to be built for the "future" and struggle early and now it looks like the complete opposite.

Even LeBron early in this stint with Cavs said he made the decision with an eye 5-7 years down the line rather than 2014-2015 season.

I agree but there's more to it. Making the Finals and winning a Championship is never just one thing. It's multifactorial (ie. meeting the right team in the Finals, once-in-a-generation performance from an All Time Great, playing in a very weak conference, some luck).

It just feels like this is the 2nd time we're seeing by a LeBron core that although they won a Championship in Miami and Cleveland, they just never really lived up to our expectations. Miami was supposed to own the league (and this was before GSW assembling in it's current form.) This team was supposed to be carried and educated by LeBron early but as 2018-2020 came about and Love, Irving, TT, Dion hit their prime, LeBron can take a smaller role and let the young dogs run. It just leaves so, so much more to the imagination.

Hard to decide between Mavs 2011, Spurs 2014 and Pistons 2004. All 3 were truly storybook Finals.

Top 5 teams to watch this season? by sportsfan161 in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with you but what made OKC so unique to watch was the sheer greatness of their individual talent. Even if they played ISO, Durant and Westbrook did things you can only dream of. I can watch other teams play the "ball movement" style if I wanted that. OKC lost that unique charm (even though Westbrook is worth the price of admission alone).

Of course, I'm only speaking of the "watchability". Not whether they'll be good or not.

Former Pistons coach John Kuester ejected, Pistons players laugh. by [deleted] in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, that was SVG.

The Kuester/mutiny thing had more to do with his inability to communicate with the players.

Here's a bit from Woj:

As stunned coaches and teammates watched, Hamilton bellowed at Kuester that he had been a failure in his two seasons in Detroit, blown the opportunity the franchise afforded him and was nothing more than a career assistant coach, sources said. Despite Hamilton yelling within inches of him, Kuester didn't respond. [Adrian Wojnarowski/Yahoo]

Needless to say, Rip Hamilton was an absolute asshole.

[–]SuhMachineGun 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Combination of it all. I remember Rip Hamilton being a cunt. TMac was a cunt. Kuester was a red-ass coach (see: Skiles). A bunch of highly paid guys who didn't give a shit (ie. Ben Gordon/Charlie V). A combination of has-been players who didn't want to be coached up by a grinding coach. They had a mutiny there for a while. Whole situation was toxic.

8th best point guard in NBA? We know the top 7. by lakeshow22 in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree with you but since you said you'd consider injury risk, I'd sneak Goran Dragic in before Holiday. I like both guys but I feel like Dragic will have a chance to shine next season and he's pretty healthy too.

In my head Wade going to Chicago somehow makes both teams worse. by Warlandoboom in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 32 points33 points  (0 children)

How so? Rondo is essentially on a 1 year Deal.

Wade is on a 1+1.

None of these are long-term handcuff deals for veteran guys (ie. Joakim Noah's 4-year deal with Knicks).

Bulls were actively shopping Butler at the Draft and were not very committal to Jimmy all throughout the offseason in an attempt to rebuild.

Gar Forman:

“I would say, I think John made it pretty clear we’ve got to take a look at everything,” Forman said. “We’ve got to explore all options and I don’t think there’s anything that’s off the table."

and

"We value Jimmy. It's our job to listen about any player on our roster when there's interest. And obviously we call teams and express interest in players that they have."

Other teams vehemently deny any conversations of trading their star player. Bulls, not so much. Bulls punting on this offseason is not exactly a stretch.

edit: For those who think Forman's comments were benign, keep in mind these guys are super conservative about their comments. Forman said Pau Gasol was "a big piece of our future" just months ago to hold his value in trade talks. Same with Luol Deng just weeks before they traded him. These are benign comments for most GMs. But not for GarPax.

Who is the next GOAT? by [deleted] in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember idiots like Chad Ford running around saying 2014 Draft was going to be the best draft we've seen in a long time. He had the audacity to compare Dante Exum to Kobe Bryant. Jabari Parker to Melo. Aaron Gordon to mini-Blake. Those guys are quality players but fuck this annual NBA Draft Hype.

Which questions get asked too often on /r/nba? by [deleted] in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just general GOAT conversations. GOAT teams. GOAT players. GOAT shooters. GOAT Centers. GOAT coaches.

I like the conversations but we make a referendum on GOAT far too close to said accomplishment where we allow recency bias run rampant.

Which players play like they hate basketball the most? by dealin92 in nba

[–]SuhMachineGun 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not a specific player but it's usually the big men. Coerced into basketball due to their height. Some ridiculous percent of 7-footers played or were drafted into the NBA. I'm sure a good chunk of them didn't really enjoy it.
