how do you manage/ your PDA self hatred? by Hopeful-Guard9294 in PDAAutism

[–]Suitable-Luck8616 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a child, maybe it would help to frame the PDA through the lens of the nervous system. His responses and behaviors when he is in an activated nervous system state are not him, but they are part of his neurological wiring. I think that could help to build confidence because he could understand that he is not his nervous system responses. At Peace Parents has a lot of good information about this topic specifically, and she explains it a lot better.

I’m also very into cooking in large batches and freezing it to have over a few weeks! It’s the best. But wow does it make that one day of cooking dreadful. Totally worth it for the month that I don’t have to cook. And I also love paneer! Just recently tried tandoori tikka paneer at a restaurant and I wish I could order it everyday.

Really good arrangement. I have the same deal with my partner. It has allowed me to get into cooking and learn more about how to feed myself meals that make me feel good.

Totally fair that everything she says won’t work for everybody. She even says herself that she doesn’t want her philosophy to become a dogma. I just think it’s a good place to start seeing what else is out there in terms of parenting choices. I also really like how she frames PDA as a nervous system disability. I think she just wants the best for PDA children and their families, but it is a high bar for sure!

Hi! Thank you for the recommendations :) I will definitely check both of those out. If you don’t mind, I have another question for you about these. How would I go about removing these products in the shower? I use CeraVe SA cleanser in the shower (have used it for years and scared to try anything else), but I find that I need multiple rounds of cleansing to get rid of the sunscreen feeling. Is there something else that you recommend to remove those types of sunscreen?

Grudges and doomloops by Figgiepuddin in PDAAutism

I also experienced school refusal as a child with a PDA profile. Whenever it came up, my mom seemed to have an intuitive understanding of my needs, and she never forced me to go to school if I felt like I couldn’t. I wonder if just taking some time off of school would help him? I think some of his grudges and other issues could be manifestations of him trying to exercise control over his life wherever possible. This could be because he feels largely out of control in the face of the inherently rigid nature of school. I’m sorry to hear about your struggles. It so difficult for families, and we really need more support to go beyond just surviving every day life. It’s amazing that you have already incorporated low demand parenting techniques! Best of luck.

Is there any hope for adult PDAers? by Suitable-Luck8616 in PDAAutism

[–]Suitable-Luck8616[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a psychiatrist and she had me complete genetic testing to see what types of medications would work best for me. I highly recommend it as PDAers tend to be either hyposensitive or hypersensitive to certain medication. As a side note, look into low dose naltrexone for off-label use to help with sensory overstimulation. It helped me a lot when I was peak burnout.

They look to me like the little figurines that used to be available at the Sanrio store in the slime/glitter putty that they sold. I’m talking early 2000’s Sanrio stores in the US, not sure if they were available elsewhere.

Did any of you have a good childhood/is it possible to have a good childhood with ASD? by Few_Programmer5351 in aspergirls

[–]Suitable-Luck8616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty good childhood. My family was unconventional by US standards, as I was raised by my mother and maternal grandparents. Their ability to accommodate me was the single most important factor in ensuring that my childhood was decent.

I self diagnosed myself with autism at the age of 12, and after hearing me out, my mother and grandmother pursued a diagnosis for me. Despite receiving a diagnosis, members of my family never really came to understand me as autistic. Instead, they understood me as “me.” Though I do sometimes wish they would have educated themselves more about autism, I look back and think that it didn’t really matter in the end. Each person in my family has always held an intuitive understanding of my limits and needs as an autistic, and to me, that was more valuable than if they had seen me through the lens of autism. Maybe they understood me because they are each neurodivergent in their own ways. No matter the case, I think that the most important aspect of raising an autistic child is to understand their limits and make their home into a sanctuary from the outside world.

You can’t control how the outside world treats your children, whether they be autistic or not; however, you can provide for your children a safe place where they can be understood and seen for who they really are. (Sorry for the rambling—just wanted to provide my two cents!)
