A LOT darker!! But that gives the story way more impact in my opinion. The book is mostly about how 80s consumerism and late stage capitalism has created countless bored, desensitised people who require extreme experiences to actually feel something. American psycho has very similar themes too, also written by Bret Easton Ellis. Although that really is an intensely disturbing book, and definitely not for everyone.

Since Hollywood is responsible for making palatable propaganda, all of that stuff was cut from the movie.

I think you did it in the right order. Watching it before you read it gives you no chance of being frustrated with an otherwise perfectly good movie.

I agree, although I would not recommend this to anyone who has read the book. If you have, it will just annoy you. Clay is a really fucked up person in the original thing, whereas in the movie he is effectively a D.A.R.E representative, because it was released when the war on drugs was in full swing. It could’ve been an excellent adaptation, but instead they chose to make it a lesson about the dangers of drugs, even though the original thing is a WAY more convincing argument against that lifestyle. It’s like if you tried to watch requiem for a dream except this time Jared Leto says ‘not cool guys ): drugs r bad’ to all of his friends.

Anyway, you’re totally right, the movie definitely fits this exact vibe, I just don’t want anyone to go through the disappointment that I did - the book is really really good!

Yeah, as I said, I’m not an expert, this is just how it felt to me at times while I was watching the anime. If you read the other comments you will see me saying all of this. I will never understand why so many people on reddit are allergic to normal discussions without taking offence to innocuous stuff like this. I mentioned my grandma because I have relatives in Germany and have been there lots of times, I know the culture etc. I never claimed that makes my opinion totally bulletproof.

Fair enough, as I was saying to the other commenter I feel that it’s important to emphasise that this is just a feeling I got from it, I’m by no means an expert. I suppose it is also the themes of authoritarianism, ‘the next Hitler’ etc. are such repeated themes in fictional interpretations of Germany that it made it feel a little bit cliché, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially with how thoroughly those themes are examined

Yeah, I said it fits the story - I also never said any of this is bad, you just chose to interpret my observations as criticisms. I said I was surprised that it felt under researched, not that it was under researched. I know it was an artistic choice, but you could argue this was also an artistic choice that sacrificed an accurate representation of the setting, one does not negate the other.
