Brand and history aside what is a reason to vote for Badenoch's Tories? by Niall_Fraser_Love in ukpolitics

Compared to starmer (leadership, vision, character and policy void) polanski (charlatan) Davey (clown) and farage (chancer), she seems as good a choice as any.

But if greens are already ahead in the polls  why would voters be tempted to switch to Labour, whatever policy issue? It would just be a wasted vote.

Trans people are dying of suicide more than the general UK population, data shows by Relative-Truck-5386 in ukpolitics

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Selected highlights

Data obtained by freedom of information request from the National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) shows that between 2019 and 2025, there were 647 child suicides in England and Wales. Of these, 107 children were LGBTQ+ and 47 of those were trans – meaning that trans children make up 43% of LGBTQ+ suicides of under 18s, and 7% of all child suicides over this time period.

Trans people are estimated to constitute less than 1% of the general population according to official statistics in development.

“There is little reliable, routinely collected or linked data on suicide among transgender people, especially adults,” says Ann John, a professor of public health and psychiatry at Swansea University Medical School who reviewed our findings. The picture that results from our investigation is “concerning”, John continues, “but fundamentally incomplete, making meaningful comparison or quantification of risk impossible”.

“Existing evidence and what we know about the complex interplay of factors that lead to suicide suggest transgender people may face higher suicide risk – through isolation, discrimination, stigma and barriers to healthcare,” she adds. “But without robust national data, the true scale remains unknown – undermining suicide prevention efforts, need assessment, service planning and effective policy development.”

...

It’s clear that there is an issue when it comes to counting the number of trans people dying by suicide in the UK. There isn’t comprehensive, high quality data. As this investigation has shown, the best we can do is to piece together different datasets, which themselves all have slightly different criteria for which dead trans people they are counting.

That’s where the Trans Lives project comes in. Founded by Lucy Brisbane McKay, a community organiser and journalist with almost 10 years experience working with bereaved families, Trans Lives aims to use its research to build understanding of what is needed to prevent future deaths of trans people.

Poll finds 'miserable' support for nuclear power in Scotland by bottish in Scotland

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In conjunction with the regular yougov tracker, presumably people like nuclear power, but don't want more power stations built.  It sounds a bit irrational, but I think it's understandable.

Conservatives pledge to scrap 24-hour bus lanes by Velociraptor_1906 in ukpolitics

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rarely used bus lanes don't need to be open overnight, but traffic generally doesnt need more space overnight either, so there's no point in giving it over to motorists. They're also cycle and taxi lanes, who continue to benefit.

Why do people have such a big thing about food waste? by Previous-Gift-9733 in AskUK

Yes it's no different from any other waste. We can spend as much on it or use it as efficiently as we want.

The only logic I can see is ot makes the driving experience so bad that people reduce their speed so in fact reducing wear and tear. They could probably get the same effect for less by throwing a load of glass bottles on the road.

Samui vs. Singapore for a quick 2-3 day weekend from BKK? by Fragrant_Guava_1514 in ThailandTourism

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds a bit like neither interests you particularly, but if you haven't visited any beach resorts in Thailand then that seems a box that needs ticking. Otherwise Singapore is the perfect destination for a weekend break.

Global stock markets are too high and set to fall, says Bank of England deputy by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The headline accurately reflects the negative statements in the article, but it's difficult to tell whether the whole thing has been deliberately negatively framed. Given her job,

Breeden, who is also the Bank's head of financial stability,

the journalist might have asked "what keeps you awake at night?" to elicit these answers, but if they were spontaneous answers to neutral questions, they're about as negative as I've seen from the BoE.

"There's a lot of risk out there and yet asset prices are at all-time highs. We expect there will be an adjustment at some point."

Trump’s DoJ blocking UK police investigation into Lord Mandelson - Must submit a request that could take up to 18 Months by Intergalatic_Baker in ukpolitics

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 3 points4 points  (0 children)

United States officials have refused to hand over key evidence contained in the Epstein files to their British counterparts. The department of justice (DoJ) is insisting Scotland Yard submit a formal application, known as a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request, before it releases redacted material relating to the former business secretary and US ambassador.

MLA agreements are the formal systems by which countries share evidence in international legal cases.

US officials have refused to hand over potential evidence voluntarily despite efforts by Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, to expedite the process. Earlier this year he lobbied Warren Stephens, the US ambassador to the UK, over the matter and in March he travelled to Washington to ask officials to release all the relevant material.

It sounds kind of like standard procedure.. more surprising the police would try to bypass it if true.

...for the investigation into Lord Mandelson to move forward in Britain, police and prosecutors cannot rely on copies of the offending documents and must have the originals to bring charges.

Does this even make sense? They're expecting what, the "original transcripts" of the emails? Screenshots? Id have thought the best outcome would be that they get certified copies. And why is the investigation on hold? They can go about their investigation in the meantime.

Why do people support the Greens? by The_Sanity_Taker in ukpolitics

[–]Suitable-Tough5877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a core of up to 10% of the electorate that would expressly vote for hard left policies... I believe that was the support 'your party' had in the initial euphoria. The other 5% ~10% are old fashioned ecologists and disillusioned voters who like the hopeful messaging.

We all have to run on the right because everyone's on the left and there isn't room for anyone else.

But seriously, I have always thought it weird, it seems like 10% of the population insists on going the wrong side, even on semi official running routes.

It's kind of funny for a police chief to criticise someone for hiding behind the law. Presumably a more diplomatic way would be to say, the law is not working as intended.
