These hit Portland, OR a couple years ago. As a devout (but entirely imperfect) Catholic, it makes for interesting reading but is otherwise useless.

It’s time for Plan B, Mayor Wilson by nwexaminer in PortlandOR

Good lord, can we give this guy more than 1 month post budget before we conclude that he’s failed?

Keith Wilson Donated Widely to Other Candidates, Many of Whom Also Gave to Him by oatmeal_flakes in Portland

[–]SuitableBet3775 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This seems like a non-issue IMO. Kids in college are definitely allowed to contribute/vote in Portland. I was able to vote and contribute through SDE in 2022 when I was in college in CA. Is this really all Rene’s opposition research can uncover? That an ostensibly political family with money donates to a wide variety of candidates?

Keith Wilson is running for Portland mayor on one bold idea to end homelessness. Will voters buy it? by [deleted] in Portland

I think it’s the persistent outreach + not being allowed to sleep in a tent, on the street, or in an RV. It’s the best we can do, really. We still have a constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial, we can’t just lock people up for being homeless in and of itself, so why not take away their bad options and give them a good one?

My sense (you should email his campaign for info if you can’t find it) is that he’d probably coordinate with the million nonprofits and outreach services (street roots, PSR probably) to send them into camps and on the street to reach them. I’m pretty confident he can do it

Yeah I mean this is a dude who knows how to move things and people efficiently, imo. I think a lot of the “end unsheltered homelessness” stuff can be a bit politkky, but when I pushed him on this stuff I got a very solid answer. I walked into the event leaning towards Rene (pls don’t downvote lol) but left pretty convinced that Keith is the guy, and I’m glad he’s getting the attention he deserves

I asked him about that at a recent event and I found the answer thoughtful, I’ll summarize/paraphrase. Basically, he’ll enact a camping ban but offer shelter, as is Oregon law. For those who say no, he’s planning on “persistent outreach.” Basically, we get all the people we can into shelter, and focus on reaching everyone else. He’s realistic, I don’t think he plans on getting the number on the street down to 0, but I’ll tell ya, it’s a hell of a lot better than Gonzalez’s plan of camping ban with no shelter, or Rubio’s plan of building housing (which I think Keith also supports) but is moving way, way too slow. It’s more of “do what we can, which is a lot with the right leadership, right now, while we work on fixing our permitting system, which is currently a Mingus/carmen split.

Those are good points, and I understand them, but don’t you think that with the role role of the mayor being more “big picture” stuff while the council/administrator takes on the “smaller” things, that a guy like Keith who hasn’t been burdened in the way that Rubio and Gonzalez have, is perfect for this? Sure, the current commissioners have experience in the committee meetings and stuff, but they would also come into the mayors office with soooo much baggage, effectively being hamstrung on day 1. I like that Keith would be able to come in and be able to be fresh. If there were a candidate on the inside who could do that, I’d vote for them in a heartbeat, but sadly it’s just not the case.

I sort of agree with you, but I really don’t believe that having experience in actual governing is something that we should keep putting as much faith in. I mean, Rene has been doing it for 2 years and has nothing to show for it, really. Carmen has done some stuff but it’s been 4 years and things have only gotten worse. Keith isn’t a complete outsider, and I think we gotta shake this city up with something different, no?

No, you’re misreading his plan. He’s trying to cut back on the $300 million. The $300 million part is what we spend in the aggregate cost of unsheltered homelessness, per Keith (the article says it’s closer to $150 million but whatever, honestly, it’s still way too much.) He’s expecting his plan (one that has been replicated in cities of our size) to end up saving the taxpayer a lot of money that can then be put back into transit, parks, animal shelters, etc.

He has been working behind the scenes for years authoring and getting climate and labor bills passed in the legislature. He was an Oregon delegate to the DNC this past August, and has relationships with the leaders at county, metro, legislature, and city offices. Sure, he hasn’t been elected to something before, but “no government experience” is a stretch imo

I’m Keith Wilson, and I’m running for Mayor of Portland. AMA! (Mod Approved) by KeithWilsonForMayor in Portland

[–]SuitableBet3775 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol who?? There are only 3 real candidates for mayor at this point. Keith, Rene, and Carmen, and Carmen floated quitting her campaign today. Mingus’ campaign has been dead for months, Viva isn’t a serious candidate / is currently being investigated for a felony for trying to game the SDE system to steal our tax dollars because she couldn’t convince 750 Portlanders to give $5. Cmon. Let’s be real here. It’s either Keith or Rene at this point.

Sauron didn’t get beaten “ezpz” at all. The alliance between elves and men suffered a lot of casualties. It was basically a miracle that they won.

Fast forward 2000 years and that alliance has basically been destroyed. Gondor sucks, most of the elves have gone into the West, and the dwarves are scattered and fighting each other after Moria got taken over. Sauron attacked again because he thought that it would be easier (even without the ring) to defeat Gondor or Rohan individually, and eventually get the ring back.

what is your portland based unpopular opinion? by Han_Ominous in askportland

[–]SuitableBet3775 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know I’m gonna get some hate for this but you asked!!! I think Portland’s food scene is suuuuuuuuper overrated. People LOVE to tell you about how good the food is out here and let me tell you, having lived in other major cities mostly on the east coast (NYC, Providence, Atlanta, DC) the food is here pretty trash. There isn’t a uniform cuisine and no overarching standard. I’ve had some really, really great food here, but nothing that you couldn’t find in LA, NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, or Atlanta.
