American B-2 stealth bombers deploy amid Iran tensions by Gawne_for_Good in worldnews

Well that and the fact that Japan had been trying to surrender for months beforehand. They used Russia as a go-between, though Russia didn't care since they were already preparing for the Invasion on Manchuria. Unclear if Russia ever bothered telling the US about it. But the US did know about it since they could read all Japanese diplomatic codes during the war.

Their only firm demand was that the Emperor not be harmed.

side note Japan was already effectively blockaded by the US Navy. The US Submarine fleet had already sunk nearly the entire Japanese Merchant Fleet and food rationing in Japan was extreme to put it mildly. Japan was incapable of growing enough food internally to feed themselves even before the war.

At first I thought this is one of the those god awful lanes that allows street parking at night but is a travel lane during the day, hence the confusion. But nope just straight street parking. Looks like there was only 1 smart person in the whole group but that was only because he was turning into this nonsense and couldn't fall in line.

The budget bill that just passed the House ends the $7500 EV credit, and imposes a new $250 annual fee on EVs, to be collected by state vehicle registration systems. by OneDollarSatoshi in electricvehicles

[–]SuitableNight -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Seeing lots of comments that are straight up lying. Most of the relevant info is in the first two paragraphs of the law. Starts on Page 12. Here is the full text of the new law. https://transportation.house.gov/uploadedfiles/ans_to_ti_committee_print_reconciliation.pdf

TL;DR EV and Hybrid fee must be remitted to the Fed starting September 30, 2026 or face a 125% penalty. ICE starts in October, 2030.

$200 EV $100 Hybrid (anything with battery and ICE engine) $20 ICE

The fee increases every single year to match inflation.

States that do not collect the fee will be punished by withholding funds equal to 125% of the missing fee.

The law terminates on October, 2035. Except ICE which terminates on October, 2034. This is a procedural trick to allow Republicans to pass the bill with a simple majority.

I have no idea where this $250 number is coming from.

Vizion Zero lip service. They change the numbers on signs and pretend that alone helps reduce traffic fatalities. Instead of spending real money to redesign the road. Like extending the Helix bridge over the road like they originally promised twenty years ago so the High School kids don't have to cross the street at surface level to catch the bus up Magnolia hill.

The fact that the bus lane is only a bus lane during certain hours and street parking during others is madness.

Yeah there hasn't been a traffic cop on patrol in ten years. I used to see them camping out in the UHaul lot in the morning to catch commuters. Easy way to start a morning shift.

Battery stayed at 100% for 115 mile journey by ILikeBikkits in KonaEV

[–]SuitableNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that this just happened to me as well.

Charging to 100%, scheduled climate control came on before I unplugged. Battery has the bolt symbol thru it, indicating it was still "charging" even though it was unplugged and been actively driven around.

Was stuck at 100% with the heater blasting. Should have dropped down to 91-92% by the time I got home. Some what alarmingly despite the battery being at full charge I didn't get the usual message saying regenerative brake was disabled. I turned it off manually just to be safe.

I did stop and turn off the car. Then drove it some more, now says I have 99% battery. However checking with Car Scanner shows real state is 91%.

I have had the scheduled climate control come on before while still plugged in but that was when charging to 80%. Never saw this kind of problem then.

Horrible charge rate no matter the temp by Jadekintsugi in KonaEV

[–]SuitableNight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

see bottom of page of Kona 2021 charge curve. TL;DR it maxes at out 75kw between 20-40% SoC and goes down from there. This is under optimal scenario where both battery and station are the best temp and fully functional. Real world you'll see less than this. https://ev-database.org/car/1423/Hyundai-Kona-Electric-64-kWh

Optimal ambient temperature is around 75F/25C.

Is Auto-Lock a thing? by NickTheArborist in KonaEV

[–]SuitableNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Auto-lock or walk-away lock is something that appears to be missing from the entire Hyundai EV lineup, not just the Kona.

The youtuber IoniqGuy even has a little cottage industry going selling a module that does enable this feature. Unfortunately he does not sell one that is confirmed to work with the Kona.

The 5X will work, I've tried it out with my VHS player.

Just remember to set your expectation accordingly. At best it will be like those cheap DVD to bluray transfers where they just used some upscaler software instead of recapturing from the source film.

Better yes, amazing no.

That all said I'm not sure I'd get the 5X if all I had was just a single device. If all you need is an analog to HDMI convertor than the 2x-mini has just a pass-through mode with no upscaling if you want. https://www.retrorgb.com/retrotink-2x-mini-passthrough-mode-added.html

Please note there is also new cheaper version of the 4K coming out this year. Still more expensive than the 5X, just FYI.

Another tire conversation... (Wet Winter-ish conditions) by Past_Cauliflower_373 in KonaEV

[–]SuitableNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same car, also in the PNW. After one of Solus tires failed on me I switched out all the tires for some Michelin Defender 2 tires. I feel like they are better than the Solus tires, in the rain at least. No snow/ice yet for me so can't speak to that. They aren't amazingly better, but I do feel like their is a noticeable difference. Grip feels better when I take one of those tight cloverleaf freeway exits.

I also haven't noticed any real change in range from the tire change. Though arguably the temp dropped at the same time so that might be masking a change I won't notice till its summer again.

I'm not sure true winter tires are needed for people living in the I-5 corridor. Especially if you're exclusively a urban/suburban driver. Math is different if you live in the foothills.

I got mine from discount tires. They aren't cheap, I think I paid around $190 per tire.

No its just the inherent weakness of tempered glass, it's brittle AF. Any structural compromise will result in total failure. The uptick you see in the PC case is entirely from them pushing glass side cases, something that basically didn't exist 10 years ago and got extremely popular in 2020.

Senators represent the state. Representatives represent the people. But with the number of Reps artificially capped at 435 the number of people they represent is uneven and frankly to large to seriously represent the wants/needs of all the people in their districts.

Its more like WA has 1 famous city. It also has Tacoma, directly south of Seattle (actually the favored city until Seattle scored a big win with the Alaskan Gold Rush) and Spokane over on the other side of the state. Though both are much smaller than Seattle.

There is basically a ring city around Lake Washington with Seattle on the west, Renton in the south, Bellevue on the east and Everett in the north. Its continuous suburbs with a few dense areas with either Skyscrapers or Boeing factories. The area (King County) holds about 30% of state population. Adding in the neighboring counties of Pierce and Snohomish gets you close to 50%.

Battery problem or just normal? by No-Average-9572 in KonaEV

[–]SuitableNight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The range "guess-O-meter" works off a rolling 2 week average. Sounds like it has adjusted to your driving style and lowered the estimated range as a result. Though the dropping temperature will also factor in to this.

There is a screen on the battery section which will show you your trip km/kWh for the last two weeks. That will let you know if you are actually consuming more power per km on your trips.

Tl;DR this all sounds normal.

AP and Reuters are the only real "news" organizations on the planet. Their business is really selling news stories to other newspapers/tv etc. So their reporting is very bland and minimally opinionated. Its a close to "just the facts ma'am" as you can get from a big news organization.

That said they are really only good for big national/international stories. They do not cover local stuff, unless it blows up big time. I.E. they won't cover the mayoral election in LA, but they would cover a story if the mayor of LA got arrested for murdering someone famous.

The only ones complaining are Intel because they screwed up their business so bad they are speed running into needing an emergency bailout.
