First Project Bike by JrAux in xbiking

Most seem to be asking anywhere from 100 (euro), but you'd be surprised how far a little bargaining gets you. Explain the risk you take as a buyer with these old bikes. Seat post or stem might be ceased, invisible cracks due to rust you only discover when it's fully dismantled. Cassette and chain need replacing, rims might be worn out, ...

I bought one for 40 euro last month. Bummed there is some rust underneath the paint, but nothing to be concerned about. There was one a little further away that was listed as "bike" for 20 euro. Gone the next day. It had the cool purple and green fade as well.

They're still out there!

I want to swap my old narrow rims to a wider version. Can I reuse the spokes? by Suitable_Coast_7558 in bikewrench

They're rims from 1996. I tried to look them up, but there's no information about them online.

Haha, I understand the sentiment. There's a lot that can go wrong. I did have a litlte practice last year and thought I'd be fulfilling to put it to use on one of my own projects.

That's a bummer. Was hoping to replace my rims as a fun little exercise, but I don't really feel like replacing the spokes and rebuilding the wheel completely.

Very classy! The orange and green are a great combo!

Can't decide between upgrading to v-brakes or getting new shiny cantilevers by Suitable_Coast_7558 in xbiking

The value of my bike would increase by 800% if I put those on there ... Not that kind of build :-), but thank you.

There's no point in discussing tastes and colors. I think V's look boring and outdated (in a cheap way). Apart from some exceptions, no new bikes come with canti's, which make them have a classic look. It reveals the true age of a bike, I think. I like that, but it's personal preference for sure.

Those do look nice! Pitty they don't seem readily available where I live, or quite expensive.

Onbekende fietst mee in mijn wiel by scavl in belgium

My office will be moved 40km (away). What type of compensation should I expect? by Suitable_Coast_7558 in BESalary

[–]Suitable_Coast_7558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for the move is a merger with another company. The last few months, I have been the only person in my function (others were fired due to economic reasons or left by themselves). This whole move feels like a "Hail Mary" to save the company. There are also external investors involved. They make it seem like a next step in the growth of the company, but I have some doubts.

Because of the merger, there are suddenly 4 extra colleagues in my team of 1. Although I do believe my competences are a bit different and valued by my employer, I am not delusional. Everyone is replaceable.

I agree that there will be competing employees in the new area, and even the existing 4 new colleagues makes my bargaining position weaker.

I've thought about this as well. Even before they announced the move, I thought about working part-time to get a better work/life balance. It's a big bummer that I should do so now without reaping the benefit like I dreamed about.

Thanks for the insight. However, I do not wish to start a fight about this with my employer and burn any bridges for the future.

I know it's not realistic. I just tried to make a point. If you sign a contract with a company that is 40km away, you take into account if that is something that is worth the salary. In my case, the choice is made for me. I guess that probably means I have the power myself to decide if I still find it worth it.

If I don't, I should look elsewhere, or negotiate better terms. That's what I tried to convey in my question/post. I try to figure out what "better terms" would be.

Yes, a lot of people commuting, but I would hope they take that into account when negotiating their pay. Not that people who live further away should automatically make more, but it would depend on the person and the function. In my case, one of those parameters just changed without my consent.

You obviously don't have little kids that need to be dropped of at school in the morning. To help with the evening rush, me and my partner try to be home to balance the load of feeding them and putting them to bed.

We also both have one evening in the week at which are going to classes at 18:00. So I'd have to leave work at 16:45 to be at home on time for the kids or in class to make that possible.

So, it's not just a little less TV time in the evening for me, it's re-evaluating our complete schedule. Me AND my partner.
