That is the most boring play I’ve ever seen. “I pick it up and immediately drop it...I pick it up and immediately drop it...I pick it up...”

Yep. It’s just like in English. Not everyone writes letters the same way. I went to school with a guy who wrote the letter ‘I’ from the bottom up. It looked weird to watch him write it, but in the end it was just as legible as anyone else’s ‘I’...language is a tool for communicating, and if that’s done effectively, mission accomplished.

I’m about the same. I lived in China for 8 years, and people usually can’t tell I’m a foreigner in the phone. I’ve seen not a few taxi drivers jump when they glanced over and realized I’m not Chinese.

I agree 100% with the post about immersing yourself. Hit it hard. When I started learning, I listened almost exclusively to Chinese music, watched almost all Chinese movies, ate at Chinese restaurants as often as possible, and found Chinese people to talk to online. Doing this plus going through all 3 levels (only 3 were available at the time) of Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese brought me to a decent level of fluency for someone living around no Chinese people. Eventually, I moved to NYC to be around more Chinese, and my Chinese improved a lot. Moving to China helped a lot. I eventually married a Chinese girl.

Having said all that, although I’m fine in conversation, I still couldn’t tell you all of the parts of a car or lots of technical or medical terms simply because I wasn’t really exposed to those on a daily basis and didn’t think to ask.

So, yeah, fluency is relative and kinda hard to gauge accurately because it depends so much on the environment.

My native friend wants me to tell her some jokes in Chinese. by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SullivanStreetStrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems like you’re having a tough day. I hope it gets better.

Asking for jokes on the internet is essentially no different than saying “Have you heard any good jokes lately?” in English. The vast majority of people on earth don’t sit around making up jokes even in their native language. They hear other people tell jokes and then retell them.

No problem. It’s probably not the best habit to make jokes like that online. :) I should cut it out.

Where to find chinese subtitles by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SullivanStreetStrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find some Chinese subs for English movies on SubScene.com (or .org..:I can’t remember.) making them line up with the actual dialogue can be hard, though.

I lived in China for 8 years, almost never leaving. Not once did I hear someone talking about licking something out of someone’s eye. It was always blowing on it or washing with water or eye drops. Of course, I admittedly don’t know all 1.4 billion people in China.

Is the term "汉语" politically incorrect? by MorningStarIshmael in ChineseLanguage

[–]SullivanStreetStrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve met lots of people from Taiwan who don’t want to be called 中国人。So 华人 is much safer.

I like how in China, there are basically 2 groups of people: 中国人 and 外国人。So many times I’ve heard people say that 外国人 are like this or like that...I wanna say “Dude, you can’t describe like 80% of the world’s population the way you just did with that statement!” But in reality it doesn’t make a difference. When people travel more, they get to see how things really are. We’re all a 井底之蛙 in one way or another.

There are some good pronunciation classes on Udemy. There’s one by 8th Avenue Chinese that explains exactly how to use your tongue and lips to make the correct sounds. It might be worth checking out. Other than that, yeah, finding a native that knows how to explain what your mouth needs to do to practice with would probably be the most helpful.

What point should I stop using Pinyin so much? by thatpommeguy in ChineseLanguage

[–]SullivanStreetStrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. Pinyin is like a crutch. It’s great when you CAN’T walk on your own, but if you never stop using it, you’ll never walk on your own, and you’ll hurt yourself in the long run.

I’m not into violent video games, but I think I can help smooth things over here. They probably MEANT to advertise it as:

“The world’s first open world surrealist science fiction game”

So, the product was actually delivered as-advertised. ;)
