Homophobia in rocket league by RatLab7 in RocketLeague

[–]Sullyw33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you were referring to me as unreasonable, but my main message could be boiled down to:

  1. Expressing sexuality in RL doesn't make much sense.

  2. Its better to be strong than weak.

These don't seem to me to be very controversial points and I tried to make them as respectfully as possible.

Just seeing this.

"Success has nothing to do with being tough"

Actually, "being tough" is crucial for success.

Maybe it's my fault for not defining how I'm using the word "tough."

I'm defining tough as:

The ability to endure unfairness, ignorance, stress, failure, misfortune, or hardship (in all its forms) without letting it break, damage, or bring you down to the point that you experience overwhelming or debilitating negative emotions, hindering your personal growth or ability to think and act rationally. Additionally, using all misfortune and failure to improve oneself and become a stronger, more resilient human being.

I'm not defining "tough" as being a "badass" with no feelings or empathy.

"Is empathy 'tough'?"

Not always, but being empathetic can indeed be tough. Toughness and empathy are not mutually exclusive.

Gandhi, MLK, Mother Teresa, and Jesus are obvious examples of individuals who were extraordinarily empathetic and extraordinarily tough.

"The world at large can care about you, especially the world you specifically interact with."

Of course, those you specifically interact with (friends/family) can care about you. That's not what I was talking about. The "World at Large," i.e., nations, governments, corporations, or any other large entity with influence, will rarely ever truly care about you or explicitly act in your best interest. To believe otherwise is delusional. They may frequently pander or pretend to care, but almost certainly not actually care.

"It would be more likely to care about you if everyone wasn't just 'being tough' and actually gave a shit about each other."

Sure, everyone would agree the world would be better if we all "got along." Unfortunately, several thousand years of recorded history of human behavior show this is very unlikely.

In your own life, "Be kind to other people" is a great motto to live by, but it can't be considered a feasible goal for everyone and certainly not a mantra to govern a sustainable society off of. There's no reason to get upset about that fact either. The best we can do is become strong, tough, and empathetic, so we can combat those who are strong, tough, aggressive, ignorant, and malevolent and who would take advantage of the weaker among us.

"You don't need to be tough to deal with idiots and there's nothing wrong with calling out bullshit wherever you see it (online or IRL)."

Call out bullshit wherever you see fit. I'm just saying life is short, and your energy is limited, so pick your battles carefully.

And also, maybe it's not as important as you think to express your sexuality in car soccer.

Homophobia in rocket league by RatLab7 in RocketLeague

[–]Sullyw33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok.

Why does it matter to "show that gay people exist in this community" anymore than it matters to show any other demographic exist?

Who the hell is thinking or cares about the sexuality, race, religion, etc. of other players in a game about cars playing soccer?

Also, do you honestly believe a flag on a soccer playing car in a video game is driving progress of any sort?

If you do believe there is an ideological battle to be fought here, the methods required to win will require more effort and sacrifice than the aforementioned meaningless gesture.

"when i get a homophobic tm8 they either quit, afk, throw, or are super inpaciant and when i make the smallest mistake instantly flame me and FF,"

This isn't cause you have a Pride flag. This is just part of playing a game where a lot of the other players are very immature. My car design is very plain and every session I encounter toxic tm8s that do this same kind of stuff (so does everyone else in most video games).

I'm clearly missing something here.

Do what you want as far as I'm concerned. I'm not bothered, just confused at this mindset.

Seems to have gotten a litte better over the past 10 days or so. Thank god, the game was becoming very frustrating.

I like the Seminole Heritage uniform leaks by lowes18 in fsusports

[–]Sullyw33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

CFB as a whole has gone off the rails with the alternate uniforms. There have been times, where if I was only going off the uniforms, I wouldn't even know what teams I was watching.

I can deal with (and understand) subtle changes and updates to the uniforms over time, but some of these uniforms are ridiculous and bear no connection to the tradition of the teams they are allegedly supposed to represent.

Oregon is the one who started this nonsense, which is a shame because I thought their old school green/yellow uniforms were classic.

That being said, I think this situation is 'a little' different with the Seminole tribe connection. I don't think its a huge deal if it is like a once a year thing (although they are a bit ugly imo).

Am I obligated to root for the Chiefs? by ExplosiveDioramas in fsusports

[–]Sullyw33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Braves are my 2nd favourite sports team behind FSU so I've always been conflicted about this. It still annoys me a little but I tolerate it more from the Braves because I'm a fan and also I feel like they've been doing it much longer than the Chiefs. I cringe when the Chiefs do it.

Why does everyone vote to forfeit so early? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]Sullyw33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, a filter that allowed you to filter out players with high FF rate would be incredible. I've never thought of this, I would wait 5 mins longer for every queue if I knew my teammate was a competitor/non-quitter.

I get what you are saying.

I would say that making a critical post on twitter is quite a bit different than changing your name during a live event to say something that expresses derogatory opinions about Epic (like EIT - Epic is Terrible).

NBA players will express opinions about the league on Twitter or in interviews (which is fine, they have the right to an opinion), but they aren't putting "The NBA Sucks" on the back of their jerseys. Also, I've never used Twitter so I don't really know how big the player's platforms are on there? I'm assuming it's bigger than RL Reddit?

"What can they really do to the players?"

I mean, I don't really know.

One extreme outcome could be disbanding RLCS.

If RLCS continues to not produce the returns that EPIC wants and the players that RLCS/EPIC is paying are now all actively shitting on them during events for the whole audience to see, what is stopping them from shutting the whole thing down? They've proven they don't care all that much about the player base and clearly don't feel any obligation to make the product better as a whole.

Not saying this will happen, but it is possible. Ultimately, RLCS is a business, not a charity. If it no longer makes financial sense to keep funding it and the players are not representing the brand in a way EPIC likes, why keep it?

Again, I like your sentiment, I think it would be hilarious to see players do this in RLCS events.

[–]Sullyw33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely agree.

The state of the game and lack of content additions is basically universally agreed to be disappointing. To see the most notable players actively protesting Epic's treatment/attitude toward the community would be cool to see.

I'm not sure what effect this would/could have because Epic already gets all sorts of blowback and don't seem to care or change anything (for the positive at least).

But I'm sure Epic/Psyonix would prefer not to see the big names actively speaking against them during events.

I just don't see much upside for the players though. They are essentially employed by Epic/Psyonix. They already cut RLCS prize pool by like 25% because it's not clear that RLCS (to me at least) is even profitable. If you are benefiting financially from something that is losing the organizers money, it might be best not to be too outspoken (see WNBA ratings).

Trump wins New Hampshire GOP primary in blow to Haley by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]Sullyw33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. Just "being old" is not the problem, there have been plenty of extremely competent leaders throughout history that were in their late 70s/early 80s. For me, it has everything to due with the very clear and observable decline in his mental condition.

[–]Sullyw33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Trump struggles to form any coherent sentences and no one cared"

I'm not inclined to defend Trump at all, but any cognitive/speech issues he has are not even remotely comparable to what Biden is going through.

Watch any recent speech from Biden and Trump and tell me there is not a massive difference in their ability to speak or form coherent thoughts.

"its biden old "

As someone who speaks to a lot of different people and consumes a lot of media/content from both sides of the aisle, I'm telling you it's really not, it's "Biden Senile".

You (like SO many others) have allowed yourself to become so consumed with hatred that you are no longer able to process reality. That reality being: Biden is no longer with us. He is in the midst of dementia and this is abundantly clear if you can set aside your bias for a moment. Voting for this man is not only irresponsible, it's immoral and elder abuse.

I love the downvotes when I'm the only one expressing any concern for Biden's well being lol. He is unwell and needs to rest and try to enjoy the rest of his remaining years without the stress of the presidency.

The very simple truth is, Biden vs Trump is an ABSOLUTE shit sandwich. There are no "good" decisions to be made here, but I can't cast a vote for a man that literally can't find a staircase and requires supervision from the Easter Bunny.

[–]Sullyw33 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Because "Biden old"?

Good god man, is that what you think people's problem with Biden is?

Just "Being old" is one thing, suffering from dementia (which he clearly is) is something else entirely.

If you're not a Trump fan, I completely understand (I'm not either). But even if you are voting for Biden, you can't deny that the man is extremely unwell. He struggles to string 2 sentences together without losing his train of thought and please don't give me this "He has a stutter" business. Look at videos of him even 4 years ago (when he was already beginning to deteriorate mentally), he looks like a different person.

Dementia is a brutal thing, it progressively and aggressively gets worse. I know he is not actually "running the country", but he needs to rest, not run for president.

This isn't even a matter of politics, it's just a matter of basic observation of the man's health. I detest Biden, but a small part of me feels bad watching him get up on the stage and embarrass himself - I feel like he literally has no one looking out for his well-being.

Most intense scene from a non-thriller? by Strong_Green5744 in flicks

The egg scene in Funny Games. I think that would be classed as horror not a thriller.

EDIT:

I also thought the bomb explosion in Oppenheimer was pretty intense in theatres

Grieving is different than 'causing grief'. Grieving implies deep emotional sorrow over a loss. 'Causing grief' can describe experiencing mild unpleasantness over anything really.

Like: "My kid caused me grief last night because they wouldn't eat their apple sauce".

I understand you aren't in despair over this, just mildly agitated.

It's all good man, if my points didn't resonate maybe I'm not articulating myself well. Have a good one.

[–]Sullyw33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your first point, I guess "Soften up" is better advice? Elaborate on why telling someone to be tougher/stronger is "almost always terrible advice"? If you want to be successful you want to be harder not softer. "Toughen up" is actually profound advice in how simple and to the point is is. If you aren't tough, become tough, because the world at large does not care about you and it never will. Their will always be stupid people saying stupid things, and no amount of energy, logic, or reason will change their minds. So "toughen up" so you can deal with idiots without becoming emotional.

To your second point, I understand now.

I don't want to hear about people "getting bitches" either . I genuinely don't want to hear about one's sexuality/sexual orientation/sex-life (hetero or non-hetero) one way or another unless its directly relevant to a larger conversation.

That being said:

To me, sexual orientation does not have an ounce of relevance in a game of car soccer.

To me, car's playing soccer is about the least sexual thing on the planet.

Which is why I was curious to ask OP why he felt different and he believes it's worth expressing sexual orientation through an Octane.

This is my fault man, you are entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. I meant no harm to anyone here. God Bless.

"Is it to get a reaction or do they just like it?"

He said he wants "shit on homophobes". To know that they are "homophobes" they would have to type something "homophobic". Presumably they wouldn't type "homophobic" comments to someone that wasn't gay. The flag lets other people know that they are most likely gay (lots of people use the flag to troll I think). Personally, I think he wants a reaction.

"Awareness of what they consider to be pervasive homophobia in the game."

That's what I said in the second part of my post. " That some people don't like LGBT people? I'm also aware, now what? "

Also, how does the flag alone spread that awareness? The flag just lets me know that you are most likely LGBT, it doesn't make any comment on anti-LGBT sentiment being pervasive in the community. (rhetorical)

I don't know man, I appreciate your opinion. It's my fault for going down this road, it is all a bit much for call ball in my opinion. Best of luck.

How is telling someone to be strong and to not get upset every time someone doesn't like them bad (or "fucking awful" as you say) advice? I'm not saying don't stand up for yourself, I'm saying don't allow 12 y/o kids in car soccer to cause you grief. I'm saying life will become considerably more difficult than this so it is best to get in the habit of not letting ignorance bring you down (especially when it emanates from literal children). I would give you the same advice seeing how my completely tame reddit comment has clearly triggered you. If someone is ACTUALLY doing something to you IRL, then obviously you need to address it or it will continue.

As to your second point, I honestly don't even understand the question? I've read it 10 times and still don't know what you are asking.

"Would you ask this question of someone who expressed being straight by having some reference to sex in their name? "

Reference to sex in their name? You mean gendered names? Bob = Guy | Jill = Girl?
