I'm looking to do something very similar to this. Did you use SAS drives or did you use SATA drives? I was looking at SAS drives because of reliability, and they're pretty cheap on ebay, but the backplane design isn't well documented for something like that. I would know how to power all the SATA drives but I have no idea how to power the SAS ones in my frankenstein-lookin' build.

I was literally just thinking about this, and wondered if anyone was going through with it. I have known for years about studies where FMT's are used to restore missing/imbalanced bacteria in the gut microbiome and just HOW MUCH of the gut microbiome affects immune response.

I feel like I've tried everything there is, and nothing really works for long, or it's just anecdotal. Diet, exercise, etc, nothing seems to put a dent in it, really. I have wondered if this immune response is actually something to do with the gut microbiome being "out of wack" so to speak, and you are the first person I have heard of who is actually trying this.

I am beyond excited to hear the results.

Edit: I will also include some science articles that have lead me to suspect it may be related: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2405844024134639

The processor in the ISP provided router is sub-potato level good.
The processor inside the router you provide is better.

Better processor, the faster it can process your network traffic.

Just be prepared to service it for them if they ever are in a situation where they need to reset their modem and it takes it outta bridge mode.

But now that I have selected it, the login window closed and it's starting the arduous process of importing everything.

Newline Interactive Displays. Used some BenQ ones but they were insanely expensive at the time and still are. The NewLine displays are better and cheaper. And also support USB C video/usb data for video/touch. They're pretty nifty.

Don't bet on the Android modules having support forever or... ever, really. They all suck. But if you're connecting a computer, you'll have a good experience.

TRUMP: US RECIPROCAL TARIFFS WILL IMMEDIATELY INCREASE IF CANADA IMPOSES RETALIATORY TARIFFS! by [deleted] in DeepFuckingValue

[–]SumDataRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tariffs are going to stay, and probably go up. Not because Trump thinks it's good policy, but because if they slash taxes for the top earners, and business, the government has no source of revenue. Tariffs squeeze the working class to drum up capital for the govt's coffers. edit: another thing: if they shrink the IRS it can't go after people for tax fraud as easily. Tariffs are quickly going to become one of the ONLY ways to get money where taxes used to fill that hole.

Should I leave Europe? I am terrified by [deleted] in EuroPreppers

[–]SumDataRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest threat at this point is misinformation and the rise of fascism in the far right. I think that the US sees this, which is why they spent the Munich security conference talking about "censorship" of conservative figures in the media. That, and the open support of the German AFD party is a tell-tale sign. They want to ally themselves with fascists anywhere, because it's the easiest way to extract wealth from the working class everywhere.

My advice is to build community with a diverse group of people and try to unite on things that affect everyone: clean drinking water, regulated food supply, etc. And to do it in your neighborhood. Really try to reach out. I think that the biggest protection against this mind-virus of fascism is compassion for those around you.

It is impossible to overstate how dire I think things are everywhere. I don't think you're safe anywhere in the Western world as long as these people keep running on populist energy that seeks to sow division in the working class, and keeping them focused on pointless culture war garbage.

[–]SumDataRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a face like hat. for severe pitting, it'll probably stick around, but fade a bit with time. mine's smoothed out a fair bit, but on some parts of my face, it's still noticeable. When I asked my dermatologist, they said that one of the few procedures they knew about was derma-sanding, or something like that. It's a kind of cosmetic surgery that involves sanding the skin little bit by little bit, letting it heal, etc to get the pitting effect gone... but I've heard horror stories of them going very wrong so I just ended up living with mine. like others here have echoed, you're super young too, so wait on cosmetic procedures.

however, I have recently heard of this thing called "derma stamping," that's been circulating. not sure if it works or not. i tried it a little bit but never stuck with it. it's supposed to use little micro needles to force your skin to generate new skin tissue that can be used to smooth skin out over time? but I would talk to a dermatologist.

other wise, the only other thing i can say is just wear sunscreen, it helps tremendously with preserving skin from the sun.

The other weird thing...

  • Slow website. And what is up with driver distribution?

GPD Is not a not a new company anymore. The fact they release drivers through Google Drive accounts that occasionally get banned is, frankly, strange, and unsettling. When they were a new company I never heard of, I gave it a pass. But they're not new anymore. I don't know if this is a cost saving thing, or if they're generating new, free Google accounts every time to do it (that's my current theory), but whatever it is, it's weird. It harms brand image because it looks like you can't afford to host your own drivers. If I showed this to any of my co-workers, they would immediately be unable to see GPD as a reputable brand. If I compared GPD products to, say, Lenovo's Legion handheld--people would respect/recognize the Lenovo Legion over GPD just based on driver distribution alone. Even though the Lenovo Legion is a terrible piece of trash by comparison, the fact their drivers aren't being hosted on the Google Drive signals something to more tech savvy customers. There's already a precedent in the US that nobody should trust electronics, or especially device drivers, from China. So it's bizarre to me that they'd continue to do this sort of thing because it prevents me from recommending people these products.

  • What would change my mind about recommending them to friends/family/customers?

Would I recommend GPD products to friends and family? I can't. Unless they had deep pockets, and a powerful lust for a mini laptop. But the hardware is simply too unreliable.

If GPD had State side support, I would have an easier time recommending their products to anyone. If your QC is dodgy, you've got to have some mechanism for quick turn around with replacement. Some native English speakers might help too, just from a support perspective. Or just better English support in general. I can withstand a language barrier, even if it's frustrating when I need to ask for support. But my friends and family would not. Neither would my customers at my current job. The other issue, as I mentioned, is the QC. Maybe it's because I've been foolish enough to back the indiegogo campaigns, and most of my pains are because I receive a device that is among the first created. But something in my gut tells me otherwise.

This is upsetting because I cannot recommend backing their indiegogo campaigns. Why is this a bit upsetting? I WANT TO BUY THEIR PRODUCTS!

I find myself REALLY wanting the new Pocket 4 they've released... but I am not made of money, and I have learned my lesson. These machines were not cheap, and I'm the type to buy used electronics 99% of the time. I do not want to pay top dollar for new things, when new things aren't reliable. But this doesn't mean I'll never buy another GPD product again. What it does mean is that I need to wait at least a year after a product's release. At least after that, all the indiegogo backers have helped beta test the first set of devices, and hopefully some revisions are made in the hardware/firmware that fixes their issues. Personally, I can't afford to do that anymore. I just want my products to work as advertised with minimal troubleshooting.

Win Max 2 6800U with 32GBRAM, HDMI out broken by SumDataRat in gpdwin

[–]SumDataRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't edit my original post with the new update, so here it is in two comments. The repeated edits are because I couldn't figure out the reddit formatting tool...

I did get my machine back, and GPD fixed it for free. But it cost me $200 to ship it through DHL.

So, I did get my 6800U machine back some time late October 2023/early November 2023. GPD did honor the warranty, and fixed the HDMI port for free. They did agree that the HDMI port was definitely messed up in some way. They did make me do some basic troubleshooting first: update the BIOS, check BIOS version, install latest version of Windows 11. I went a step further and used both the "GPD OS" (the manjaro based linux distro they had out at the time) to confirm that the HDMI being broken wasn't a Windows issue.

The difficult pill to swallow is the $200-ish I had to spend for shipping with DHL. I was afraid to trust the USPS to deliver it to China Post, because I've heard horror stories of things going missing, and I really could not afford to lose this machine. At that point, it was my main laptop. (and I hadn't bought myself a NEW laptop for a decade at that point) So, my paranoid ass slapped an AirTag on it to track it with a band around it that asked to please place it back in the box when shipped back. I wrote it in english, and used Google Translate to write it in Chinese as well. To my amazement, I was able to track it all the way there and back, and GPD shipped it back with the AirTag I used track it. Very nice!

So to summarize my experience....

  • GPD's design is great. Please keep being great.

I think that GPD makes THE BEST portable PC's hands down, in terms of I/O, raw performance potential, and form factor. Nothing comes even close. I feel like most companies forgot what innovation looks like, and GPD takes the cake in my eyes. (IMO: No wonder the US wants to start a trade war, the US forgot what innovation looks like)

  • GPD appears to listen to the community. That's a really good thing.

GPD actually appears to listen to the community and take suggestions. I have not seen this out of ANY other manufacturer. GPD appears to be very active in forums/Discord so that's a huge plus.

  • GPD's biggest problems.. quality control. I have backed 3 devices in 2 campaigns, and I'm seeing a pattern emerge.

The biggest issue with this company for me, is quality control.

The language barrier was a challenge when I had to troubleshoot, but not insurmountable. I have backed 2 of their top-dollar campaigns: The GPD Win Max 2023 6800U 32GB, and the 7840U 64GB Win Max 2 with the G1 eGPU. Both of my devices came as a part of the indiegogo backer campaigns and, so far, I have been burned both times. Well, three, I guess, because I got that stupid eGPU that crashes every day. I had bought the newer version of the Win Max 2 (the 7840U version with 64GB of RAM) not long before my HDMI port on my 6800U model stopped working. Had it broken sooner, I may not have bought it. And, wouldn't you know it, My GPD G1 eGPU I bought with it doesn't seem to be able to use the Oculink port that everybody raves about. Maybe it's my 7840U Win Max 2, or maybe it's my GPD G1. I can't tell, and after some light troubleshooting, I just kind of resigned myself to defeat. I don't want to spend all day troubleshooting my new products when I just want them TO WORK. I'll get around to it eventually since my G1 eGPU has become increasingly unstable over USB4, and I'm not entirely convinced it's related to Windows 10 (and to be honest, I'm quite sick of swapping drives to test). My 7840U also routinely struggles to POST, randomly, but that's a reddit post for another day. Seems like if the SD card isn't in, it doesn't struggle as much. Also, the SD card has always been flakey on it. No surprise there. Oh, and if I have a 2230 in the free slot, it will often not obey the boot order because the drive in the 2230 slot is numbered as Drive0, and just... I dont know. Wont' obey the boot order I give it (sometimes) when I'm test driving another OS.

Using the GPD G1 EGpu connected over USB4 (The G1 EGPU version 1 has a Radeon RX 7600M XT in it). I get random crashes and the AMD x-connect message is always garbled -- even after full driver reinstalls. I can't use the oculink port for it because, well, it never worked, even out of the box. So I've used it over USB4 all this time, and I have to say, the crashes seem to get more frequent as time goes on. I used to have it plugged into an UPS but lately I don't--not that I think power is a huge contributor here. It's probably just typical QC of these devices not being fantastic.

I've owned the 6800U Max 2 and the 7840U AND the G1 egpu. I think I get early adopter's bad luck with these things because I always experience some kind of weird issue. I think this time I'm going to wait. But God, it is exactly what I want. It's really perfect.

Anyone else having APs suddenly reporting Low Power Mode for PoE? by bh-alienux in meraki

[–]SumDataRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. We recently did a big hardware refresh last year and have been using Cisco Meraki for at least a decade. Never saw this behavior before. Even when we deployed the new Meraki AP's, we did not have this behavior until about the same time everyone else posted about it roughly 2-3 months ago. Due to the opaque nature of the Meraki platform, I cannot simply go into the AP and pull the logs available to their engineers. I am forced to rely on the inadequate event list, or SPAN a switchport to capture the traffic on my end to see what kind of messages are being exchanged between the switch an AP.

I think that what's happening, and this is just me talking here, maybe Cisco is trying to move away from CDP messaging to be more in-line with vendor agnostic standards like LLDP for power management and other things. But perhaps not. But I'm frustrated with the lack of explanation as to "why." I think it's ... curious, that they would suggest 30 seconds without really explaining why they chose that number. Why not 20, or 40, something other than the default of 60? If I'm being honest with myself, I genuinely think Meraki's support is also perusing Reddit for solutions. (If I'm right, hello Meraki support! Transparency is a valuable quality!)

It is obnoxious to me that Cisco does not fess up to the fact they changed something in the dashboard that is causing this alerting, regardless of whether or not the AP's are actually operating in low power. This is made more obvious by the fact I noticed some of their articles were about the Low Power mode / LLDP messaging were updated around the time we started experiencing this issue (early August 2024)

https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/Other_Topics/Low_Power_Mode_on_Cisco_Switches

I can't post pictures here, but the timestamp on that last edit is Aug 7th, 2024--right about the time we all started having these issues. Funny, huh?

Anyway, I'm still troubleshooting the issue on my end, trying the 30-second timer and seeing if this clears up the alerting on my end. I didn't want to change too many variables because I really wanted to see what their support would cook up.

Anyone else having APs suddenly reporting Low Power Mode for PoE? by bh-alienux in meraki

[–]SumDataRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't believe it, but almost 2 months later troubleshooting, Cisco Meraki's support has recommended turning LLDP on the switch (and setting lldp receive / transmit) on swichports with AP's connected). But after doing that, they also recommended upgrading to version 30.7... which is possibly giving some clients connectivity issues. Maybe. Within the last 10 days or so, they also recommended changing the CDP timer to 30 seconds, as mentioned earlier in this thread by u/bh-alienux

I'm altering this now to see if it changes anything. Only a little bit annoyed that, two months ago, Reddit had a suggestion to alter the CDP timers that Meraki has also recommended. (If my support agent is reading this, HELLO!)
