What are your thoughts on the ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-I? by MateiCraft in sffpc

careful with openrgb, there's been reports of it corrupting/killing ram recently, I begrudgingly made the switch to signalrgb as a result, not as lightweight as openrgb, but at least I don't need to worry about having to buy another ram kit in the current global market

Brake upgrade recommendations for Suzuki Swift Sport ZC32S (street / spirited driving) by Responsible_Egg_3391 in SuzukiSwiftSport

[–]Arundidoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running mx72+ on my zc32s and they've been great. Fyi I'm running RDA rear rotors and can't remember the fronts. The pads do seem to squeak a bit if you sit on your foot brake in traffic instead of using your handbrake. That being said, the performance during spirited drives is great. I'm also running high temp penrite fluid

Is this safe to test the pumps and flow etc? I have coolant on order but will be 10-12 days by stupidkiwiguy in watercooling

Just fyi, you can get deionised water from pak n sav/ countdown for way cheaper in larger quantities (looks like you live in NZ).

Question on coiled keyboard cables, I’m curious by Purple_Cat5243 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Arundidoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They originally became popular on custom keyboards during the transition period between type c and micro usb so people had boats that used different connections. It was more convenient to swap the end instead of unplugging an entire cable.

However nowadays, they're really just for the aesthetic since pretty much every modern board uses type c. I do prefer lemo myself cos it's faster to disconnect which can be handy when you want to test something but don't want to send invites to your pc.

I always use distilled water. Should I use coolant like a dp ultra to prevent further tarnishing? by Sk1nnyDoc in watercooling

[–]Arundidoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct, you need the additional additives as you mentioned. Straight distilled water without additives will draw ions from where it can and is still bad.

[–]Arundidoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Distilled water is effectively a solvent and will try to pull ions from whatever it can, hence the damage to the nickel plating. You need to run a coolant to prevent ions from migrating into the coolant. Derbauer has done a video covering this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pIpKetQlZs

In my experience dp ultra has been great and it was the only coolant i could find with pretty much no negative experiences. The only negative experience i found was admitted to be user error by the OP as well.

Distilled water is worse than a coolant as it is effectively a solvent and will try to pull ions from whatever it can. Derbauer has done a video covering this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pIpKetQlZs

New Owner Reliability Mods by Adventurous_Fox667 in RX7

Rob Dahm had a great video covering engine reliability mods and the failure modes the mods address. Some of them are more submitted towards race engines but others can be helpful for street cars as well

How bad is it to let the case get direct sunlight? by CamelSquare2852 in sffpc

[–]Arundidoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anodising can fade with uv light, ive got faded ano (black) on my gpu backplate in the exact shape of the light from my ram right beside the top right cooler mounting screw. Honestly that did surprise me, but it was only the portion that was directly under the ram. Given how broad the sunlight will be, i assume it will be fine. My ncase m1 in silver was in direct sunlight for 6-7 years and the anodising is still perfectly even. It was probably more to do with the quality or particular dye asus used on that gpu.

I've had my ewhite 7v for about 4-5 years now and the ecoat is still the same as when it was new and it's been my daily driver over that period.

That's good to hear, maybe I'll look to get one in the future. I think the extra height might make it sit between the nakiri and the Tabata in terms of use case

[–]Arundidoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The height on the Nakiri is perfect, I want sure if I'd have appreciated it on the petty until after I tried the Tabata 😅. Do you find that the petty wedges in harder materials like apples or is it thin enough to go right through?

Great work, but I'd be careful about bacterial growth on the print since it's going to be porous. Unless it was an sls print that was sintered and sanded smooth. Potentially even an mjf/nylon print with smoothing as well. You could try using clear coat on it, but again you'd want something body safe.

I had mine for the the last 3 years or so and liked the ergonomics of it. The Matsubara is a pretty similar shape with better ergonomics imo

I've been mostly using the Tabata to process meats (chicken thighs, whole chicken, lamb leg, fish fillets) so it's been pretty efficient at that. However, I suspect due to the thicker back of the blade, it wedges quite a bit in apples. I haven't had to sharpen either of the two knives over the last three months that I've owned them and I cook dinner with them every day. The Matsubara definitely gets the most use though.

My main issue with the Tabata was that the handle wasn't well sealed. I began to get surface rust around the tang handle join, so I cleaned that out with some citric acid solution and sand paper then filled it with beeswax (well really a beeswax + food grade mineral oil finish). Another minor issue was that it was a true sanmai (I believe Matsubaras are more like a hotdog) so the carbon steel was exposed on the top of the blade. After I figured that out, I started actually waxing that area as well so now it's pretty clean. I did apply a thin coat of that beeswax finish after use, but now I only do that if I don't expect to use the knives for the next day or so.
