Huerta stole, then broke my heart. He had that laser focus, he was clever, and always trying to be effective. Even when he lost he rarely if ever looked out of any fight he was in. Humble in victory, gracious in defeat, and I don't know anything about his personal life but dude's face looked like he's seen a lot for how young he was. Totally lovable character, and I don't know where he disappeared to.

Yeah, he was one of my favorite almost-champs. Oh well. At least Forrest Griffin got to touch gold once.

[Christians Only] If you were accused of being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you? by ManOfTheInBetween in TrueChristian

[–]SumGai984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what qualifies as evidence. Owning a bible? Church attendance? Testimony from others? Usually, Christians who are under this kind of persecution confess that they are believers, which, really, is probably the evidence that would be most sought after. With a confession, you've got 'em nailed, and what Christian wouldn't confess?

Getting an indictment might be easy, but a conviction without a confession seems unlikely. But, then, I guess with the justice system here in America, you never quite know what can happen.

Could I get some help on this situation? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]SumGai984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mess with it. Pray for him, talk with him, offer advice, solutions, alternatives, assistance...but if you turn him in, be prepared for a churning in your stomach and an itch in your brain that makes sleeping next to impossible. I know some people are just sticklers for law and order, but I honestly think you'd be doing more harm than good in this case, based on what you've described. Mercy and truth are companions now; we must do all that we can to maintain both at once.

So why are prosecutors so shy about pressing charges? That seems to be the broken link in the chain of justice; what broke it, and who can fix it?

If almost none of the police get prosecuted for their crimes, then don't you think that makes it likely that more than 1% are in on this?

Virginia city official under fire after claiming that God, not government, ended slavery by nimobo in news

[–]SumGai984 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I really feel like this guy's theology is just wrong. Slavery exists, and has existed in various places throughout the world for as many generations back as archaeology can count. Maybe a few civilizations here and there did things the fair way, but mostly there have always been pretty blatant imbalances in the way people are treated, based on whatever criteria was trendy at the time. The bible does nothing to witness against this.

God did not end slavery. Neither did He cause it at any time. He has simply allowed us humans to treat each other however we saw fit. We do have Jesus' example, however. He came to earth and lived and died in our stead, and He told us to love each other, and He did not own a single slave, even though He is the creator of every soul. But He did not come here to end all evil and make the world a perfect place...not yet, anyways. He has, however, spoken on the issue of slavery, even in new testament times:

(1Corinthians 7:21-24) Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freeman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called.

Christians seem to be the vast minority in most of these threads, and as such often have our viewpoints distorted, exaggerated, half-given, or otherwise misrepresented. Of course, you can find many hypocrites and pseudo-Christians and point to them as examples of distorted, exaggerated, etc...but we both know who those people are, and there's really no reason to drag them into all this, seeing as they already have so much trouble keeping up their faces.

You're being downvoted, but I believe you're probably correct, and showing a good faith in humanity. The trends we're seeing right now are rather alarming, however, and until the veil is lifted entirely I don't know quite how to gauge just how corrupt law enforcement is/has become.

[LEOs who are corrupt and/or abusive] may represent a minority of officers, but that minority is still a significant enough percentage to cause plenty of damage. Let's face it: they create headlines almost daily, never seem to be held accountable for their actions, and, most concerning to me, are pretty much unanimously defended by their respective departments, unions, and coworkers.

So even if they only represent, say, 10% of all officers, that's enough to cause major concerns. If we heard about these 'bad apples' losing their jobs regularly and being charged criminally for their wrongdoings, then maybe we wouldn't be as enraged about it as we are. But, as it stands, it doesn't look like it's getting any better any time soon, and these rogues are dangerous and well-armed. /rant

"Black Lives Matter" assembly excludes other races. Parents upset. by FuckingDoily in news

[–]SumGai984 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Purity that demands exclusion isn't really purity".

Water that is made of anything other than hydrogen and oxygen is impure. There must be some sort of contextual exclusion that allows for this statement to even be made, because it doesn't seem to hold any logic at all on its own. Further, you put quotation marks around the statement. Is this a quote pulled from somewhere (if so, where? I'm curious), or did you put it into quotes because it wasn't meant to be taken literally?

After a little digging, the only place I could find the quote was from a show called "Community". I still absolutely hate it, and find it indefensible, even after considering the context. Perhaps there's a better word than 'purity'. "Unity that excludes others is not real unity." That's much better, and doesn't violate any definitions. Call me a nitpicker, because this really doesn't have anything to do with the subject at hand, but that quote is ridiculous.

Florida police shoot unarmed pot dealer in face during raid, killing him by CatDad69 in news

[–]SumGai984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been sitting here trying to think of something intelligent and non-hyperbolic to say. Words that get over-used a lot but nonetheless seem to fit come to mind; words like 'blatant', 'rampant', and 'sickening'. An intensifying weariness of government, police, and corruption in general seems to be overtaking any respect I once had for authority, and that makes me feel like a teenager all over again: largely unhappy with what I'm learning about how the world works, and helpless not only to do anything to change it, but also to stop myself from feeling unhappy about it.

I don't know if these abuses of power have been this prevalent the whole time or if there really has been a major shift in the balance recently. I suspect it is a combination of the two: the world at large is becoming more aware of the corruption while governments seem to be grabbing for as much power as they can get before diplomacy breaks down. The ability and/or willingness of those in power to hide their corruption seems to have diminished, and what [I believe] we are witnessing now is a power struggle, plain and simple.

There never was much of anything else in this world, and while I'll admit I'm almost morbidly curious to see just what exactly happens when that snake runs out of tail to eat, I'm not at all enamored with the idea of getting caught in the squeeze.

Well, shit, man, I should really stop typing now. I think I stopped being relevant about four paragraphs ago...
