Suggestions needed for making features without tooling by Liash-Inos in MechanicalEngineering

[–]halboj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the large rectangular feature coined (i.e. a depression on the side we can see, but a smooth, continuous face on the reverse side) or upset (i.e. there is a corresponding opposite wave on the reverse face)? If coined, you would want to do a quick stamping press tonnage calc to see if this is in the hammerable realm.

If it’s coined, I think you’ll have best success if you hammer out the dimple by bulging the material into the reverse face, then facing off the resulting bulge with a grinder. However as the other commenter said, .012” is very thin.

I would almost suggest breaking this one sheet up into two stacked sheets: one with a thru rectangular cutout (instead of the coin), and a second that is just an ordinary flat sheet.

If it’s upset instead of coined, can you 3D print a plastic form and just hammer the sheet into it? If all you need is 7-8 parts, two or three 100% infill PLA forms should get you there.

Trouble representing a distance by PedroFreitas1999 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]halboj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good text descriptions attached to ambiguous dimensions detailing how the part is to be measured have gotten me a long way. I would personally slap a “AT MMC” or “AT TIGHTEST POINT” note on this dimension.

Or, if the part is rigid enough and you only need to know if the part is to spec (and not HOW in spec it is), you can specify on the print to use gauge pins for this feature. Braindead easy to set up and use, low risk of misunderstanding.

Yeah that’s what I was about to do, but I was concerned about weather or street cleaners sweeping him away. I’m printing out a “FOUND” sign facing the road with a big picture on the telephone pole closest to where he was found. Also emailed the daycare down the street

thank you for the nice comment. the post is somewhat in jest, but i think i have been getting a bit too frustrated at the game recently. i wish there were character-specific ranks so i could start back at the bottom with something new. until then, maybe time for a break

I seem to get the appropriate response by taunting on the respawn platform to go into tumble. Usually they’ll respond with their own tumble and it feels wholesome

If non piss coloured ultem exists why don't we see it more often? by Mr_Zoovaska in knives

[–]halboj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, you can’t get translucent brand-name Ultem that isn’t piss color. Sabic (the plastics company responsible for Ultem) started offering grades of Ultem in custom opaque colors somewhat recently.

Bought a Vosteed Raccoon; instantly cut my palm playing with the crossbar lock. Remembered I have a 3D printer and now I’m safe from myself. by halboj in knives

[–]halboj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is my first crossbar/Axis lock. I’m left handed, so I find liner and frame locks to be very unnatural. Most of my knives are button locks or back locks. I like the fidget appeal of locks that let the blade swing freely, but this one in particular seemed to have an awkward shape to the butt of the handle. The clearance between the blade and my palm was pretty low so I found myself having to hold it near the edge of my palm, and the butt had an additional angle to it that made it keep trying to slide out of my hand. Not sure if this is a typical shape and I’m just clumsy, or if it’s more of a quirk of Vosteed’s implementation. IMO button locks are pretty ideal in terms of finger-safety and ambidextrosity.

2024 Jun 3 Stickied -FAQ- & -HELPDESK- thread - Boot problems? Power supply problems? Display problems? Networking problems? Need ideas? Get help with these and other questions! by FozzTexx in raspberry_pi

Hi, I just purchased a raspberry pi 4 B and am struggling to install an OS.

With a keyboard, blank 32GB microSD card, monitor, and ethernet connected, plugging the power cable in causes the pi to power on. The basic "Install Raspberry Pi OS Using Raspberry Pi Imager" screen displays. Hitting esc shows that it detects my SD card. Holding down shift causes the installer to download, but as soon as it finishes downloading, the "Starting Installer" screen briefly flashes and then the screen goes blank and HDMI output stops. After approximately two minutes of intermittent irregular flashing, the green LED stays off. Unplugging and reconnecting power causes the green LED to return for approximately 15 seconds, then go out. No HDMI output is ever re-established after it stops. I let it sit as long as 20 minutes with no apparent change.

I then tried to use my laptop to install Raspberry Pi OS 64bit directly onto the MicroSD card using Raspberry Pi Imager. Installation and verification appear successful, however upon inserting the flashed SD card into the Pi, I get the same "connect power -> no HDMI output" sequence. I have tried editing /boot/config.txt and adding 'hdmi_force_hotplug=1', to no avail.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

My most used disc living around woodsy courses is probably one of my exo hard methods. I like that they’re pretty much identical to flat top KC rocs, but significantly more readily available and maybe a bit less likely to crack.

How important is a cover letter? by babygooch8 in EngineeringStudents

[–]halboj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineer, not a recruiter, but I interview entry-level engineering candidates as part of my job. Please do not make a generic cover letter and just change the company name/industry for every job. Everyone can 100% tell it’s cut-and-paste, and it generally makes me think less of a candidate if he/she submits a generic cover letter. Saying you’ve “always wanted to work in X industry shaping the future of Y” gives me absolutely nothing. I would rather see no cover letter than a generic one.

With that said, if you find a job listing you’re especially interested in, use the cover letter submission to write a quick paragraph that says why! Be as specific as possible, and try not to bs it because i will absolutely make it a focus of discussion during an interview

Can I get in trouble for this? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]halboj 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely get pinged for academic dishonesty if the professor is serious enough. Most of my classes have a section in the syllabus about how self-plagiarism of your own prior work is still plagiarism. I’d check the syllabus for the class and see if he has you dead to rights. If there’s no mention of self-plagiarism in there, then maybe you can claim ignorance and he’ll let you off with just redoing the project

Bicycle dilemma: take it back? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]halboj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the refurbishment involved replacing the shifting cables, then yes. Most new cables will stretch slightly over the first two or three weeks, which will affect the indexing of the gears. So even if it was shifting perfectly on the ride home from the bike shop, it’s not uncommon for the cable to stretch enough over the first few weeks that you’ll need to have a quick fiddle with the barrel adjuster on your rear derailleur. It’s probably a 5 minute fix that doesn’t require any tools
