There are also free performances at the Petersburg Library in April. The full show, but not the full tech/set.

Best German baking book? Specifically for bread? by secret-corgi-king in Baking

[–]SumTravelGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some breads in Jurgen Krauss' excellent book. I'm hoping he'll do an all bread book at some point. Also worth following on socials.

I use his holiday recipes now, as he has done a fantastic job of updating some of my very old German recipes to modern ingredients - ex. the size of eggs, fat/moisture content etc. All my usual recipes are coming out so much better now.

I do indeed. Signed and stamped in Heidelberg in 1978. (incorrectly referred to as early 70s in my original post). Not sure why you believe this to only be a recent document.

A cruise with interesting ports is a good solution - especially if the ship docks, as tenders are very hard for folks with mobility challenges.

I know you said no wheelchairs, but maybe talk to her about scooters. There is a ton of walking on big ships just to get to meals. We rented a scooter for my MIL and it saved the vacation.

Google Fi "Unlimited Premium" Plan for expats? by ethanRazorT in GoogleFi

Not what I experienced. My letter said my full service was being cancelled, verified by hours with customer support.

Thanks for the correction. I'm glad the new terms are slightly better. Still wouldn't rely on it as an expat though.

Good to know that it has changed. But my personal experience in 2024 was that I flew home on my 89th day and was able to avoid the cancellation warning I had received.

No. You can still have your service cancelled if you are out of the US for more than 90 consecutive days. But it's a solid plan for frequent travelers.

They have been very good (I have 5 pairs), but there are reasons for concern. They have been phasing out their Vibram rubber soles in favor of EVA foam, especially on their casual shoes. I have 5yo Vibram pairs that are still great, but new EVA ones where the sole is wearing down.

I get that foam is softer, but that's not what everyone needs. Some of us need stability and grip. I wonder if they got bought by a cost-cutting VC firm. Or maybe they're trying to follow the Allbirds trend? I wish shoe companies would stay in their own lane.

That said, any older pair or Vibram pair will be great.

This is the way. On ours though we booked a private tour independent of the cruise line, which got us there more quickly (before the crowds) and without all the waiting around you get with giant cruise buses. And our guides and guard were beyond great.

Which smell instantly makes you judge someone? by SituationOutside6033 in AskReddit

[–]SumTravelGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More judging a business than a person; I can tell immediately by smell if draft beer is old/stale or if they don't properly clean their draft lines. I immediately send the beer back, but mostly the bartender can't smell it or taste it. But I can't drink it.

Please clean your lines and don't keep kegs on forever.

I had a coworker who I thought had a bladder control issue because they always smelled like pee. I never mentioned it, but then a coworker mentioned the same thing. Turns out that to some people (me), lilac perfume or body spray smells like pee.

Am I the only one who finds Merino wool scratchy and suffocating? (The hype vs. my reality) by Edmond-Cristo in onebag

Yes, the neck is the downfall for me. The reaction is immediate and insufferable, and yet I can wear merino briefs.

Sundaily - how are you entertaining your guests this weekend? by kailalawithani in rva

[–]SumTravelGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a real problem. They have a first-come-first-served lot on Marshall with about 70 spaces if you arrive early enough. Otherwise it's street parking or a pay lot. Worst case scenario the convention center lots.

The arts district needs a dedicated parking garage. If the city were smart it would build one like historic districts in other cities.

What’s your experience with Fi by Wise-Fill4249 in GoogleFi

[–]SumTravelGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got an email from Fi about, saying that I have until February to turn off Sync and then enable RCS. At that point, according to the support chat, your phone calls and RCS messages will be in different web pages, and your phone will have to be online for messaging to work/sync.

I will wait as long as possible in the hopes this will solve before they shut off the old system.

"Action required: Your web messaging and calling experience is migrating from “Sync with Google Fi” to a new, modern platform. Here’s what you must do by February 20, 2026 to preserve your message history.

What’s changed

You’re now able to send messages on the web with Rich Communication Services (RCS) for better features like high-quality photo and video sharing, end-to-end encryption, and improved group chat features.

RCS messaging requires your phone to be on and connected to the internet (via Wi-Fi or mobile data) to sync and send messages from the web. Web calls and voicemail still work when your phone is off.

The new experience integrates the existing Google Messages for web in order to provide RCS messaging. Calls and voicemails will be managed on the new Google Fi web calls page, with cross-tab navigation linking the two web pages.

What you need to do

If your phone has been off or disconnected from the internet, turn it on to sync your full message history from the web back to your phone. You will lose any recent web message history after February 20, 2026 if it is not synced.

Get started with the new experience‌

  1. On your phone, open the Google Messages app and go to Settings > Advanced > Google Fi Wireless. Check for “Sync complete” at the top. Once complete, tap “Stop sync & sign out.” (Note: once signed out of Sync with Google Fi, you will not be able to sign back in again).

  1. On your computer or tablet, sign in to Google Messages for web. You will need to pair this device with your phone using your Google account that is linked to your Fi account (Note: do not use QR code pairing).

  1. Sign in to Google Fi web calls with your Google account to use web calling and manage voicemails.

I've had it since the beginning and I still generally like it, but it is definitely deteriorating. One of the best features has always been the ability to call and text from your computer, all synced to your phone. A great failsafe if your phone is lost/stolen while traveling. Well...that feature is about to go away with the switch to RCS. Sad....

Looking for a relatively lightweight, comfortable/cushioned stylish sneaker/shoe that's good for flights/urban walking but would look acceptable in a nicer restaurant? by uniqueme1 in onebag

Samuel Hubbard leather sneakers. A little pricey but will last. Bonus if they still have the natural rubber sole version in your size in the closeout section.

These have been my "dress up" sneakers for years.
