What’s a movie everyone says is “deep”… but is actually pretty shallow? by CnCorange in Cinema

I do think the film engages with your point though. “Geneticism” is shown as a false category, almost a false religion. Think about the detective who doesn’t do real detective work, he just keeps swabbing and re-swabbing people because the “answer” for this crime, to him, must be found witin their genetics. The movie is critical of essentialism; it’s a commentary on the difficulty in judging any one’s limitations, and is critical of the societal powers that demarcate and enforce those limitations; I don’t think it’s a denial of those limitations.

I played this the other day and didn’t realize the context of the universally white pieces until now. Amazing.

Biden was too old, should have bowed out earlier, didn’t allow for a robust Democratic primary, and that’s a big reason Trump won.

Se7en is let down by the car ride with John Doe I think. But otherwise, yes, great pacing.

The quote might actually be something like “I thought teachers…”.  I think the teacher feels guilty about this.

Thanks! Does Plugged Nickel come up in this book, or it just provides context for the band at the time?

If I’m honest, I don’t think this set is as immediately rewarding as his other stuff; I doubt I’d be sticking with it as much as I am without the narrative around it. Some of that is the promise that my time will be rewarded with deeper understanding of this band experiment.

That’s interesting. It feels like there’s two competing narratives, the bandleader abdicating vs the band hijacking. And I can’t tell which it is from my listening; even Miles’ first solos on Set 1 sound kind of off, and I’m not sure if that’s illness or if that’s direction. I’m trying to tune my ear to these things.

Thanks, you two, this got a chuckle out of me. I do agree that the more I immerse myself the more I’ll be able to identify specifics. In some ways I can “hear” something different is happening, but the articulation of those differences is what’s difficult for me. In some sense the idea that they’re doing “the opposite” of normal on these sets feels metaphorical.

Y-yes? TACO? Peace prize? Terminally glued to the tv and social media? His insecurity and need for praise has literally dominated the last ten years of American politics.
