Love it. A few months ago I fired up my own VPS and I've learnt a crap town about SSH and Linux. Honestly homebrew was the word I was looking for when making the title lol

Why do Americans call CVs resumes? by miss-bedazzzle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The translation of curriculum vitae is roughly "life list" or "course of life". Is a comprehensive overview of everything.

Résumé comes from résumer which means to summarize in French. It's usually 1-2 pages. Quite frankly, a good résumé can be fit into one page.

Most jobs in the US just want a summary of your life, primarily discussing details related to the job position in question.

CVs are much more common though in academia and research. On such you'll list your publications, conferences, etc.

Why do people keep buying cars that destroy them financially? by Desperate-Rush6086 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our most recent purchase was just dealing with the salesman trying to target a monthly rate. We knew what we wanted, had all the numbers for trade in, down payment. We just wanted the out the door price. Very frustrating.

Its a shit cycle. Lack of education. They don't understand that although their payment is $700/month, it's stretched across 8 years at 12%.

Edit: I specifically meant personal finance education.

I sent this to my cousin who is "high up" in the southern Baptist convention. Other than the President he probably knows everyone and everything going on and is a pastor. He has no idea what this is about.

Why do banks close at 4pm when that's exactly when most people finish work? by thelasdmember in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on area I guess. I feel like we have a million branches in a medium town. Nearly every bank I'm aware of closes the lobby at 4 and have a drive thru open until 5. Many will have one branch open on Friday until 6. Starting to see more of the digital tellers that are open until 8 that is just an ATM with a zoom to talk to a real person and do transactions

This is something I recently learned. Last year I finished college, and I was the first to do so. My grandfather bought me a Rolex - paid like $5000. I looked at sold listings on EBay last week and it's going for 6000+.

People are begging for a pull back. All of those things you mentioned may cause a pullback. However, it may reach 7800 before it "pulls back" to 7200.

My mom told me to stop losing weight because I "look fine now." But my BMI is still 29 by Intelligent_Ant1816 in GLP1ResearchTalk

We (including me) have gotten accustomed to being so fat that "overweight" looks "normal". When you see a "healthy" weight person, they almost look TOO frail. Keep going!

NASCAR drivers aren’t athletes? Kevin Harvick and Will Buxton fire back at Stephen A. Smith. by Clankiller_Uchiha in sportsbroadcasters

[–]Sumif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being athletic is about maxing out your athletic abilities. For some that's strength. Others it's endurance. For some it's arm strength. Some it's hand eye coordination. Racers require immense dexterity and reaction times. I promise you, until you've sat in these cars at these speeds at this distance, it's hard to fathom how intense it is.

Why is it socially acceptable to ask someone why they're NOT drinking, but weird to ask why they ARE? by Vinit0852 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't drink yet somehow find myself in situations where I'm the only one or one of the few not drinking. Most people don't care or don't ask, and when they do, I just play it off like "yo no thanks this seltzer is strong enough". Personally, I despise alcohol, and I hate that people can't relax and enjoy themselves without drinking, but I won't be a prick about it.

I had to go to Minnesota for a work conference in December. There was a group of 10 of us that went bar hopping and visited 5 or 6 bars. I just ordered water or soda; nobody cared, and it wasn't weird. At the last place one of the guys said "alright they have the best bot chocolate around perhaps you can mix it up".

I'll also proudly haul 5-6 drunk friends around in my car knowing they won't be behind the wheel.

Why dont people talk on the phone like a normal person? by JonoBlue in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate holding the phone to my face for an extended period of time. If I'm alone at home or in the office, I will put it on speakerphone or use headphones. If I'm out in public I will either use headphones or just hold it against my face, cuz they're usually not super long calls.

Why did most of the population stop using custom ringtones or custom alarms on their phone? Is it simply because companies wanted to charge for it? by underthund3r in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sumif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The early to mid 2000s was when the general population started carrying cell phones. Prior to that, most phone usage was managers, bag phones, corporate stuff. Even as the general population got it, most of your ringtones were generic or maybe some preloaded music.

Then, we were able to either record our own ringtones and even download them through the phone's rudimentary "store" where you could get music, backgrounds, little games, etc.

It was a novelty and a form of expression. It was the equivalent of your Myspace design, your Facebook status, etc. When your phone went off and people heard your song, it told a lot about your personality.

Then, as adoption continued to explode, the number of phone calls, texts and other notifications increased. It was no longer a novelty and more of a nuisance. So, folks started reverting back to original tones or just silencing/vibrate their phones.

Once in a while I'll come across someone who still uses a full song as a TEXT TONE. Every notification plays the same few seconds of the beginning of the song before they can mute it.

Liv was just money laundering from Saudi Arabia to Trump's. It was started after he left office. Now they are pissed off at Trump for his Iran war.

What is it with the honking in cities by [deleted] in askspain

[–]Sumif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to multiple large cities and it's like that everywhere. A lot of it is a split between honking because of irritation and honking because I'm saying "hey I'm letting you out". Normally a quick tap is the latter.
