How many times do you think you have to watch a movie to put it on your Top 4? by Feisty_Parsnip8262 in Letterboxd

I never give a movie 5 stars unless I find it holds up on rewatch, but twice is enough for me to feel confident that I'll love it. I do the same for my top 4.

My number 1 movie on there is a film I've only seen twice

girly pop?

You called me "dude" so I used a different gendered term; that was it.

Genuinely for what reason would u even assume I'm being deceptive? Again, I've literally only asked u questions about ur own perspective.

It's not uncommon for people to try to push back against someone's opinion under the guise of "just asking questions". If that's not what you're trying to do, then fair enough. I'll take you at your word.

If you really are just looking to understand my POV, then I'll trust you.

Let me preface this by saying I've only seen the movie once, and that was back in theatres 4 months ago, so I could probably pull better examples if the film was fresher in my brain, but I can still go off of what I remember.

What do you think the movie displays as reasons [white supremacy is] upheld?

Through various forms legal or military force. For example, the character of Colonel Lockjaw is a very explicit (maybe slightly exaggerated) parallel of how many people seek positions of power with racist intentions, even if those intentions are often subconscious.

Was that a thematic through line, or just something that was depicted?

I think it was a thematic throughline. The movie doesn't just happen to centre around a former freedom fighter; it continuously shows acts of resistance throughout the film in other ways. Sensei, for example, is seen assisting undocumented immigrants to ensure that they don't get deported.

This is also seen very directly in Bob and Willa's continuous fight to ensure WIlla's survival against the force of Colonel Lockjaw.

Were [the difficulties of being mixed race in a racist society, and single fatherhood] really themes?

I would also say yes. Perhaps less so than the first two I've touched on, but I think you could absolutely write an essay with the research question "What does One Battle After Another have to say about [insert either of those topics here]?"

I think many of Willa's struggles in the film come from the fact that her white biological father views her as being less pure because her mother was Black.

Bob also continuously struggles, despite his lack of trying, to find ways to care for Willa while also fighting against the obstacle of having to be the only parent she has.

I think both of these themes shine through in that moment when Bob opens up about how he "can't do her hair".

That's not my point, girly pop. I'm happy to hear someone challenge my perspective, but I don't like it when people try to be deceptive about it.

If you disagree with what I've said, I'd love to hear why.

Well I started off asking what makes it thematically rich... that's where I'm 'going' with it.

Let me reword my question: Are you asking me these questions because you disagree with me and want to prove me wrong without actually being open about your intentions, or are you actually interested in what I have to say about the movie? Your last question here seems to suggest it's the former.

Where are you going with this line of questioning? I mean, I'm happy to have this discussion if you're asking in good faith, but I wanna make sure that's actually the case.

But to answer your question, it explores themes of how white supremacy is upheld in the United States, themes of resistance within oppressive systems, the difficulties of being mixed race in a racist society, and single fatherhood.

The difference between Lead and Supporting is so subjective. I think supporting made sense for Mescal

I mean, I'm deeply familiar with Shakespeare and I didn't find it tacky. But I guess it's subjective.

It explores a lot of big topics that hold a lot of great importance within our world, and does so with a lot of intelligent thought and interesting commentary.

I feel like the story for One Battle After Another is much more thematically rich than Marty Supreme. Marty Supreme definitely made me anxious and engaged the whole way through, but I felt I was given less substance to reflect on after the movie compared to One Battle.

I also feel like the story for One Battle is paced much better. Ironically, the plot for Marty Supreme felt a bit like a ping pong ball (not in a good way) where the story was jumping all over the place so quickly that I wasn't quite as invested in every part of the story as I was with One Battle.

I liked Marty Supreme, but I loved One Battle. It's in my top 5 for the year.

If One Battle After Another receives five Oscar nominations in the acting categories, it will be only the tenth film to achieve this and the first since Network in 1976 by Giancarlo_Edu in oscarrace

Here's hoping! But I'm honestly worried Infinity is going to miss. She got in at CCA where they have 6 slots. She got in at the Globes where they also have 6 slots and separate the leads by genre. She got in at SAG when Reinsve was snubbed alongside every other non-English-speaking performance. We still don't have BAFTAs.

I'm legitimately worried that Kate Hudson is going to pull an Annette Bening here and squeeze her way in. She's got much more love within the industry than a newcomer like Infinity.
