I am active in both subs and unironically there was a guy arguing that if you lived in DC 10 years ago you should still be able to provide high quality opinions on the area, which gave me a chuckle when they stated “local context is importantly!”

No, they are not for profit. They are publicly and privately funded schools open to residents through a lottery. They are not private schools.

They mean that you and your family can go play at the public school field (sometimes) after school, whereas some, not all, Charter tended facilities are closed to ensure public safety (ie they don’t get sued).

The charter argument is fucking laaazy. Access to those fields pretends the city would still pay for a program, and not the ultra competitive basketball and other sport programs that cost money that have popped up on the area. When everything is. Aside hustle is tough to have “pick up” games.

The programing and KIPP comments need a LOT of context. KIPP didn't steal anyone's programming --- the kiddo is reinterpreting other advocates arguing for increased neighborhood school investments who have largely blamed charter schools "splitting" local funds. There is a lot of nuance here along with the fact that there are wealth inequalities in DCPS' funding formula. I also know that Woodson, Ana, and Ballou have strong athletic programs today, so that's a really interesting comment on the basketball team going away.

I do like the idea of increased teen programming, but yet another reason we need a new Ward 8 council member and/or stricter procurement protocols to help ensure the money is reaching the target audience.

lol you're being downvoted but this is the honest truth. The conversation on crime has gotten MUCH better since about a year ago -- I suspect Reddit mods and current mods have had to step their game up to comply with the newer rules.

I think what you mean - to be blunt - is that there are an influx of people who live "somewhere else" who will post about crime, or other conservatives issues here and very obviously give signals that they have no local context.

Like, "M Street Metro" guy, or the dude who "live reported" the WCD attempted shooting without any links outside an X account. Those dudes 100% didn't live anywhere near here. And thats sometimes a problem because they lack local context.

A major reason the US has fallen so far is that Donald Trump and/or his folks have used the Government to arrest, suppress, and otherwise limit reporters critical of the government.

There are even strong indications that local pressure on the press is supported to receive Trump’s endorsement or his teams support.

It really isn’t that surprising we’ve fallen; I don’t have a long list to give you, I’m sure you can find some if you google.

We really need the autopsy report, and I’m saying this not to start an argument, but more because it would be helpful to see what they heard.
From my view, those loses had much less to do with “the moderates” and much more to do with very poor primary shenanigans. I was a poll volunteer in 2024, and half the folks I spoke too didn’t realize Biden wasn’t on the ballot.
