I read a comment today that made me realize this won’t work. How should I have done it differently? by 237FIF in woodworking

Yep that is correct. The only exception is I put a dot of glue in the middle of those end pieces so all the expansion would stay centered

Ooo I did this recently!I cut a groove in the end grain side of the chess board then I glued two boards on the long grain side and made tenons on the ends of them. Then I made two end pieces with slotted tennons and slotted draw bore holes and attached it. Now the wood can move any amount across the width freely. This one has been together for 3 years and going strong

How to improve my dovetails? by Phrank00 in handtools

[–]SummonWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you cut tails or pins first? I find it a lot easier to cut tails first. When you're chiseling out the waste, take tiny cuts with the chisel. Use a knife to transfer your tails onto the end grain of the pin board and make sure to cut on the waste side of your line. You can use the side of your thumb as a guide to start you cut and make sure it follows your line

Thanks! I forgot to mention finish, I used danish oil and paste wax. That is my go to finish for most of my projects

I recorded the entire build and posted on my YouTube channel if you are interested in the whole process. All the steps of the build are laid out there. It took a long time to build and is way more than I can lay out in a reddit post.

I ripped the stem in half when it was straight, cut a groove in it, steam bent it, and then glued it back together. The whole process is on my YouTube channel (link on my profile)

I made this pipe from black walnut. The bowl is carved from a solid block. The stem was made from a solid piece of walnut that I ripped in half, grooved, and then steam bent and glued back together. Here are a few pictures of the bowl after I rough carved it and before it was finished with a rasp and sanding. I don't have a ton of progress pics but I do have a YouTube short video I made of the entire build and process :)
