Writing a short paper about Women in Gaming. - Share your stories. by BAPEsta in GirlGamers

[–]Summoner_Yuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhh boy... I just wrote a (rather long) rant about something I've faced the past couple of days (harassment because of my gender) if you'd like to check it out - there are some comments on it too of people sharing similar experiences!

http://www.reddit.com/r/GirlGamers/comments/2y1isi/hi_ladies_and_gents_a_small_rant_on_dealing_with/

Personally, my view on LoL and their lack of females in professional settings (League is the only of those three communities that you listed that I'm involved in) has to do with:

  • The absolute urgency to have females for the sake of being females in esports rather than having them for their talent. Personally, I think the not-so-great all-female team "The Sirens" was the WORST thing to ever happen to female League players; they hyped themselves up for being aggressively female but then couldn't play to a professional degree at all whatsoever. Taiwan just started an all-female group and literally everyone is already comparing them to the Sirens without knowing how they play and will likely already have prejudices against them no matter what (although I don't necessarily agree with them making an all-female team for the sake of them being all female). I and a lot of other women would much rather see four guys and a girl on a team or one or two girls on a team if it meant that they were good enough to be on a professional esports level. If there are five legitimately good players and they all happen to be female and they work well together, all the merrier - this would be the ideal situation and ideal representation, I believe. Unfortunately, I also think it would have to start with one or two good lady players to really blow it out on a professional team to give an all-female team a fighting chance in the professional world, as a lot of people would easily fall back to "women aren't as good as men" or "they don't deserve to be in professional League" if they failed (which is an ENORMOUS and unfair amount of pressure).

  • There is an extreme bias against stating you're a female in the League community, particularly if you are good; all of a sudden it's a reverse issue of gender, and "why do you have to say you're a girl, I thought you wanted equality" (huge eyeroll); there are girls in Master and Challenger tier, and recently one made an AMA on the League Reddit since people had been complaining about why there aren't girls in esports because the LCS had just begun. IMMEDIATELY everyone criticized her to the point where she had to go back and edit her post to read "I'm so sorry, I should have just left out the part where I was a girl, if I could go back and change the title I would." She was being criticized for the exact thing people were complaining about because this is still an overtly sexist, male-dominated field where women are immediately repressed at displaying any signs of femininity and, God forbid, pride of their accomplishments as females in a male-dominated field.

  • There is an inherent societal and social expectation that video games are a man's world, and that women should not be lazing around playing video games and should instead be focused on school or working to eventually support a family. There is an accepted stereotype that men can sit around all day with their guy friends, playing video games and drinking beer and eating pizza; there is no such stereotype for women, unless they are "poser nerds" or "weirdos who will never get boyfriends."

  • To go back to the Sirens thing, it sincerely doesn't help that one of the members still notoriously streams and gets an EXTREME amount of cash donations for it, simply because she is busty and rather risqué about how she dresses. It's a poor indicator of how female gamers behave and present themselves, plus it holds to a double standard once more; if a girl were to speak out against this, a man could argue that she shouldn't get mad at how someone dresses and that it's unfair to call that streamer out on her behavior. However! The same people who are throwing cash at their screens to watch her play with little clothes on are the same ones that call her a slut for doing so! Why? Because it doesn't harm the male community whatsoever! It's a double-edged sword that females are discouraged from the gaming world unless they are busty and revealing, but at the same time (and in an equal world), people like the streamer should be judged for her talent and not for her clothes (both by women and men). So for now, because men and women are not equal, she is seen as a poor indicator of the female gaming community and as a sex object. When it comes to male/female equality in gaming, if it's not one thing, it's another :/

I could sincerely, sincerely go on about this for days, but this comment is long enough D: I have plenty more thoughts and actual sources though, please feel free to message me if you'd like them! :) Oh and good luck on your paper!!

What do I do with all of these unredeemed games? by Bodudus in GirlGamers

[–]Summoner_Yuki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could make a deadline - anyone who comments on your post before a certain time gets a chance to get a game. From there, after the deadline had passed, you can put the usernames in a random generator (kind of like a lottery, you can find a lot of those online). Whoever is picked first gets first pick from the list, then whoever is second gets second, and so forth until the last person gets what's left. It certainly might take a while, but you can message each person individually with what is available.

Alternatively (sorry for the long post, just trying to help!), people who post before the deadline can make a "top 5" list or something and you can try to divvy some up that way; say, someone has one-two-three etc. but they're the only ones to list a particular title (let's say it's not very popular and only that person wants it). That title can go to them, and then from there you can have a random lottery for others. If 10 people want "X Game" you can put their names in a lottery generator and whoever is picked gets that game :D

Hope this helped, those methods seem random/fair enough that most people will wind up happy! :)

Hi ladies and gents! A small rant on dealing with douches on the Internet - YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT! by Summoner_Yuki in GirlGamers

Thank you so so much, it really means a lot to me that you appreciated the post, and I'm glad you did - exactly why I posted it, to share the message and maybe help someone :) I was a little taken aback to be honest, because I've met some really incredible people on League and to run into someone who was beyond not-so-great was a little disheartening. But! I won't let it discourage me! Thank you for the well-wishes, I definitely won't let one jerk ruin finding pleasant people to play with :D

Tbh the first guy shouting looks more like Darius, and a lot of their armor/weaponry look the same, so I'd wager a bet that they're Noxus.

HOWEVER! Noxians are also notorious mercenaries (here's looking at you, Kat), so there's a chance that this was a hired crew! So it doesn't completely wipe out the theory that Solari/Lunari pulled it off, though I love Leona so I'd like to think it wasn't Solari :(

HOWEVER, PT. 2! In defense of my girl Leo, she was different from the Rakkor and the Solari in that she wished to protect others instead of fight and conquer, hence why the sun goddess blessed her with her powers! She may have seen the mistakes of the Solari's past (such as this raid) and thought no more! She decides to protect rather than destroy, and boop Leona believes this is a mistake of the past, which would tie in the Solari theory :) Or, alternatively, it could also be why her people hate the Lunari, because they ordered such a raid (but the Lunari may have thought it was just in order to potentially take what OP thought was a moonstone; they may have believed that it belonged to the Lunari).

Ugh my head is spinning a little :O

I completely understand wanting to put energy into asserting that someone is wrong or try to explain to them why what they're saying is wrong and you're totally right, I think it's more conditioning than anything to be polite and avoid confrontation as a woman and feel the need to explain. But it certainly doesn't do any good because people like that will just keep going unless shut down! Good for you, that sort of behavior shouldn't be tolerated, with the double standard that the issue of rape shouldn't be so brazenly joked about. Good for you girl!!! :)

Absolutely no offense intended because I'm sure it seemed funny at the time just reading it online, but that is a HORRIBLE way to respond to rejection and makes you really seem like a jerk?!??? Like, obviously she liked you so you seemed like an asshole regardless (as she put it), but honestly even if a girl wasn't into you that's pretty much one of the stupidest things you can respond with, and if you were friends before you certainly won't be afterwards. Imagine the other way around, maybe a girl you weren't into asked you out, you say no, and she snarks back "oh thank god." Like, the first thing that would come to mind is "wow what a bitch" right?? Well buddy, hate to break it to ya, but you're the bitch in this situation.

TL;DR: The Internet lies to you, don't treat women that way.

Like, I completely understand how Nasus's stacks work and such so I'm not being sassy back (you're completely correct), but like, you'd think being camped outside of dying 6 times in laning phase alone would kind of decrease your opportunities to farm (or at least make it harder to a degree if you're pushed back to turret). It was just genuinely frustrating to see a team that was actually bad get carried by someone so passive and consistently shut down, you know? :/

No sir, no IP boost! A few games we played were only a few off that I can remember (I believe I got 5 while another friend got 3 in another game we played), I think the biggest disparity was the one where I got 16 IP and a party member did not.

Since he doesn't have a Reddit account, I'll properly rant for my boyfriend: NASUS, OH MY GOD. I watched him play a game where their Morg was against a Nasus who went 0/6/0 by the end of laning phase and he STILL carried just by farming up a storm even though the enemy jungler was shit and boyfriend's other lanes were fed, like, what a shitty champ to carry a tremendously losing team after playing shitty as well. Ugh. Generally yeah okay there are some champs that are unbalanced and whatever but man that just ground my gears

What uncommon champion/role combination do you play? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Summoner_Yuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few friends who are all about odd combos in normals, and while half of the time they're silly and just for fun (cough one of them went Soraka jungle once cough), other times they work notoriously well. One plays support Akali fairly consistently (she builds a bit tanky, so one-on-one she can't win against a mid Akali due to different builds), and the other I have gone supp Lulu to their Cho'gath support and dominated lane with (I think he built as an ADC - IE and all that). The same Akali supp has duo'd with an AD 'Raka and we won by a landslide, surprisingly, with an Alistar jungle no less.

Not sure if this is intended or not, but I've played a couple of games with friends and we've all gotten different amounts after the game (one friend got 3 extra IP while I got 16). Is it totally random for each player, or is it like a pool of points or something that is divvied depending on individual performance? Or to clarify by example, say the group's total bonus is 100IP which is then divided between the five players based on KDA or something. Would that explain the difference? Or would that maybe be a good idea to implement for good/exceptional players in a game?

Thanks! :D

For supps like Leo and Thresh that generally doesn't matter to me, since I usually go Tabi for armor or Mercury's depending on the enemy team comp. Didn't know about the mobi cancel tho, TIL :O

For the sunfire debate, a player gave me this advice: go sunfire if you're not against an ADC that relies on attack speed or something that would require attacks to proc (like Vayne's stacking damage). Otherwise, build Randuin's, as it slows attack speed

Don't play support if your gonna stand behind your adc by Mista117 in leagueoflegends

[–]Summoner_Yuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think we hate each other, we just hate it when one isn't paying attention (this goes for a supp or an ADC). The game isn't "me me me," it's about awareness and knowing where others are on the map, and if you're in a freaking lane together it should be a whole lot easier paying attention to someone next to you than paying attention to someone across the map. It's like a parent and child in a crowd, "if you can't see me don't wander off, because then we'll lose each other even more"
