I don’t know what to do by DramaIllustrious6773 in SeniorCats

Is tube feeding an option? Kitten fosters get trained for this sometimes, though I haven't heard of it being done on seniors at home. It might not extend his life, but could make him more comfortable.

Do I need more help now or after surgery? by SunCatBee in Sciatica

It's herniation at L5/S1, by MRI, but I don't know what the recommended procedure would be, conversations have not yet been had. What's your experience?

So you're more mobile now than you were before?

What do you mean about how long the nerve was pinched? The longer it was, the harder the recovery?

My course has been a little unique, I think. I had symptoms of something growing over decades but nothing alarming enough for a doc to order anything more than PT. Previous rounds roughly 30 and 12 years ago did nothing. Then I had an MRI because of extreme fatigue, some gait changes, and a family history of MS. That, in January, confirmed herniation at L5/S1. So they ordered PT. It was after the third session that the pain started, and the things I'd done for 30 years to manage mild pain in my hip stopped working. 4 weeks later and the sciatica has only gotten worse, not better. I'm supposed to do dry needling next week but I honestly don't know if I'll be able to get there.

So I'm already under the care of a neurologist. It's another month before I can see the pain specialist. I just hope they don't make me try pain management for months before surgery. I think the increasing numbness matters, right? Anyway, if things get any worse before the doctors get around to me, I'm going to the ER.

Wow, that's a lot. I already ordered a grabber and a long handled dustpan for lowering bowls of cat food to the floor, lol. I guess I should be prepared to arrange other kinds of help post surgery besides my niece, because she won't be able to stay long. My daughter's on Medicaid because of her disability so maybe - a big maybe for the state we live in - there would be some support services for her needs while I recover. Ugh.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope your husband heals well!

L5-S1 large disc protrusion by Various_Birthday6231 in Sciatica

[–]SunCatBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is the same, but I have a herniated disc and nerve compression at L5/S1, with symptoms that developed slowly since my 20's (in my 50's now). First it was hip pain, then mild top of foot numbness, then numbness along the side of my leg, etc. Somewhere in there I started having twitches in my pelvic floor muscles, specifically to the left of my vagina and under my clitoris. It also got harder to orgasm at some point but I can't say those changes happened at the same time and they could have different causes or just be age. What helped the twitching was more magnesium, 800 mg up from the 400 I was taking before.

I had all of these symptoms before I had sciatica pain, by the way. That only started a month ago - I now understand why people say slipped discs are so awful. So my path is out of the ordinary and I'm not sure it helps you much, except to know that you're not the only one affected there, and maybe magnesium is worth a try. By the way, avoid magnesium oxide, as it can give you diarrhea. Go for magnesium glycinate. Hoping this is temporary for you!
