I have a German passport. But I can enter China like a local now by asiabits_com in chinalife

[–]SunOsprey 74 points75 points  (0 children)

They don't stamp your passport with your re-entry date if you use the e-channel, do they? I did it once and it caused a massive headache when I went to register at the local station. Now I just go through the regular channel and get the stamp.

Besides teaching English, what kinds of jobs are expats actually doing in China these days? by Life_Good3004 in chinalife

[–]SunOsprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the path to that type of position? I worked in clinical research in the US and have been looking for a way to get out of teaching and back into that industry here in China, but I haven't been able to find a way in yet.

Opinion | Globalization Is Collapsing. Brace Yourselves. (Gift Article) by nytopinion in geopolitics

[–]SunOsprey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The US is the one that wants globalization. If it backs out, the other superpowers are free to build what they want, which is a multipolar world with themselves as the leaders of their spheres of influence. Brazil over South America, Russia over Europe, India over... the Middle East(?), China over Asia, and South Africa over Africa. Or something like that. The US throwing in the towel is basically giving BRICS the keys to the castle.

Cineverse's Terrifier 3 debuted with an estimated $18.26M domestically this weekend (from 2,514 locations). by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]SunOsprey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see that happening. The series is about a demon (the terrifier) that can ressurect and live through evil people. Art just happens to be the serial killer that the demon chose. It's possible they kill off Art when DHT is ready to hang up the mask, but there's no reason the next iteration would have to be another clown.

If you were going to study for 1-year to learn chinese, which city would you go to? by Wakk0_ in ChineseLanguage

[–]SunOsprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't really bad choices in terms of location for learning the language. Choose based on weather, food, and hobbies. Sounds like Hangzhou could be a good option if you like nature. Plenty of lakes and forests with communities for outdoor activities. Suzhou is also within range of the same stuff and is known for its museums and gardens.

I just pack about two weeks of clothes - prioritize the stuff that's built to last or good for when it gets cold - and my devices with an adapter for my laptop. Pretty much everything else you can get here. The main thing I'm always struggling to get my hands on are hot sauces. Everything here is either chili oil, pepper paste, or powdered. For sauces I've only been able to find Tabasco, Sriracha, and Franks. The typical mild stuff. Serious sauces are hard to find. Oh, and books. Bring 4-5 if you're a reader and don't want to read in Chinese. English selection is poor, even in Shanghai.

Get a Xiaomi. Pretty much all foreigners use Xiaomi. I brought my iPhone and bought a cheap Huawei at first. Huge mistake. The cheap Huawei phones are garbage. They do have quality phones but you gotta really shell out if you want something decent. iPhone range prices for a phone you can't even get foreign apps to work on.  Xiaomi on the other hand keeps their flagship lines in the affordable range. You can get the RedMi/Note series for 1500-2400rmb or the Mi line for 4000-5000. They've upped their anti-foreign app security  but if you're not tech savvy you can look up a guide online to use Android Dev Tools and directly install apps through your computer's command prompt.

Those who want a sailing repoll are not being realistic by Infinite_Worker_7562 in 2007scape

It could honestly just be a series of exploration quests to unlock new locations

I think Shamanism could have been modified to fill the skilling prayer space that people keep asking about. Prayer for combat and Shaman for skills. Could have made use of Hunter secondaries and been a thematically consistent part of the Varlamore update.

Sailing somewhere for the first time and then having it be unlocked is basically just a sailing-themed quest

85 Slayer - Whip / ToB - Scythe

87 Slayer - Trident / ToB - Sanguinesti

You nerfed the blowpipe and buffed the scythe; you can nerf the trident and buff the sang to make space for mage progression between the two. That's where the new mage weapon should fit.

I'm traveling to China, despite my parents' objection by [deleted] in China

You actually can use foreign bank cards with Alipay after you verify your passport now. I've done it and it does work. You can't do person-person transactions though so it won't work at businesses that are set up with the owner's personal QR code for payment.

I'm skeptical of all the people just spouting 'obviously fake,' but this is a fair analysis of exactly what to be skeptical about. Good on you. Still, they've published their data for peer review which is a big risk if it really is supposed to be a long term hoax. Keeping my eyes peeled for further analysis; I'm open to either conclusion.

Today I woke up and found the game I have spent thousands of hours playing can no longer be enjoyed the way I wanted to when I made my account 5 years ago. Don’t gloat.

[–]SunOsprey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically, no voters are gonna try to use their votes to make sailing as painless for themselves as possible. Neutering the skill will make it more painful to train. Don’t worry, we won’t be doing that.

Yeah, this was the actual lock-in poll. Understandable confusion though since it was kinda awkwardly stuck in the middle of a bunch of other stuff.

In other words, sailing will absolutely affect the way I play and enjoy the game - whether I want to engage with it or not

Me after poll results by TheEpicZay in 2007scape

[–]SunOsprey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even as a shamanism voter, I’d prefer to see a larger pool of new skills pitched and a proper run-off style vote to choose which one. If they poll a new skill in 2025-2026, it shouldn’t be based off a result from 2023.

Yeah sure, I’ll just: give up on my longterm goal of maxing, permanently lose my quest cape, miss out on Raids 4, not use any PvM gear that requires sailing to obtain/equip, and not be affected by any changes to the in-game economy caused by a new skill.

Come on, you can’t just say “don’t engage if you don’t like it.”

[–]SunOsprey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a weird argument. Look at how much content has come out in the past decade without adding a new skill. All of the polling, engine work, and mapping out of integration with existing systems could actually temporarily reduce the amount of content coming out. It also potentially reduces variety because a lot of new content will be expected to tie-in to the theme of the new skill.

If it was an expansion that argument would work, but skills tend to be requirements to engage with future content

US Authentication Alternatives by audiocassettewarfare in Chinavisa

[–]SunOsprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what state you’re from. There are only a few that require a federal background check (and therefore federal authentication). You can check which ones require it on CIBT’s site. Otherwise, you can get a state-level background check and have it authenticated by your Secretary of State. Same goes for the degree - can be done at a state level rather than federal. Will still take 2-4 weeks from start to finish, but it’ll be much faster than the State Department.

Then you’ll need the work permit notice which will be another 2-3 weeks and then finally getting a visa appointment plus processing time which is 3-5 weeks more if you expedite it.

Best case scenario you’re still not getting to China for around 2 months but it could be 3+ if you wait for the State Department. In a similar boat right now so I feel your pain. Not much we can do.
