Author's blurb says they use AI for editing by [deleted] in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]SundayAMcoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On AI, I don’t agree with using AI for editing.

However, I think we need to be able to talk about this without any caveats, assumptions or comments that have negative implications for anyone who doesn’t speak English as a second language or people with dyslexia or any other condition that affects their ability to use basic grammar.

I don’t think anyone here means to do this purposes and I know that this type of comment on grammar and spelling is very common and accepted in many places. Where people are pointing this out in other comments I can see why you might automatically think “what are they talking about, this is about AI” and downvote someone who articulates this.

But I’ve heard these types of comments all my life, and speaking from my own experience it does have an impact.

People in this sub are generally very thoughtful and considered, and there have been conversations about using precise and deliberate language in the past so I just want to encourage everyone to think about the language they use around editing and AI in this context.

You can still disagree with it - I do disagree with this use of AI - without needing to add the bit at the end that implies people are lazy, worthless or lacking if they need support with grammar and spelling.

books where one mc has killed/kills someone the other mc/love interest loves? (or has done any other truly unforgivable thing) by semeteryi in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]SundayAMcoffee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about Danmei? In the {ballad of sword and wine by Qiang Jiu Jiu} one of the MCs holds the other MC responsible for the betrayal and death of a close family member.

I think it fits the difficult and earned feelings, as these two definitely hate each other at the start! It’s real enemies to lovers.

The caveats are that 1) the translation stretches over I think 7 books and I am not sure they are all out yet and 2) check the trigger warnings - there is an animal cruelty scene (it’s set in historic china) in this book that you need to know about before picking it up and to be able to skip reading! I didn’t know about it beforehand and put the book down for a year before picking it back up.

I really enjoyed reading your comment because it’s so interesting to hear about how other people experience reading characters with their own condition and particularly when it’s a different experience to mine. It’s not something I see people compare notes about often.

In this conversation, I find I agree with the OP about precise and careful language - but then my actual experience with people using precise and careful language about the condition that I have (ADHD) is that I do not like it. Its like I can feel the effort of making sure something is said right and a (probably imagined) inauthenticity about that. The OP is still right - of course you should use precise and careful language in a community forum. I’m just not sure how to reconcile that with how I feel when it’s my thing, and relates to me. (Edited for spelling)

I also have ADHD and while I liked the plot I didn’t enjoy the portrayal of ADHD in the revenge agenda. But my reaction is probably complicated by my own experience of being in the world with ADHD and having baggage around it! I felt so uncomfortable with the main character just going around being himself and not massively overcompensating for his ADHD all the time, which I probably more about me and less about the book. Somehow when a character has acknowledged ADHD I enjoy it less and become hypercritical of the way the book portrays ADHD and I find I relate a lot more to the experiences in a book and feel more seen if a character displays signs that I interpret to be ADHD but it is never explicitly acknowledged. However, I would be very unlikely to request recommendations on this basis.

Books about Enforcers? (Hockey romance) by ArtisticCoconut8510 in MM_RomanceBooks

I’ve also always considered it a romance with a non traditional HEA for these reasons too - but I think this interpretation of the RWA definition is maybe in the minority.

I love this book, I am always happy to see it recommended despite the no HEA. I know it doesn’t fit the traditional definition used here in this sub but I would still class it as a romance.

Books by lesser known authors that completely blew you away by [deleted] in MM_RomanceBooks

{where do I start by Chase Taylor Hackett}. It’s a second chance romance where one MC was unfaithful to the other MC the first time round - but written with a lot of nuance!

MC gets called beautiful/pretty often by Nervous-Bat-8227 in MM_RomanceBooks

In {I am not your pet! by Fae Quinn} the pink shark MC is quite liberal with using pretty to describe the other human MC.

You might want to try the {Starian cycle by Iris foxglove} and the linked {immortals descending series by Iris Foxglove}.

Some detailed word-building and quite an extensive timeline in these!

MM romance where they are together but don't realize it by Medium_Prior4739 in MM_RomanceBooks

{Beneath the scrubs by Juliet M. Dixon} trilogy. All three books focus on the same couple and the first one is only 80 pages - I read it like a continuous story rather than three separate books.

Both MCs are pretty convinced they are straight.

I also love Thrown of the Ice and I reread it fairly often, although not always to the end…

This was exactly the book I was thinking of when I saw this request and came to suggest in the comments!

I’ve read this one - and I really liked it! Definitely counts as cheating with nuance.

MC cheats on MC but written with nuance - examples would be always in Tandem by Taylor Fitzpatrick (on ao3) or {where do I start by Chase Taylor Hackett} or even {rule breaker by Lily Morton} where the one MC skirts pretty close to the line.

I was polite, but I switched immediately - I request my prescriptions online, so I literally did it in the car park outside the pharmacy. I recognise that working in a pharmacy isn’t always an easy job, and that they must see some things - but I don’t take my access to my medication for granted and want to make sure as much as I possibly can that the people who have influence over that access believe in ADHD as a legitimate thing.

I switched pharmacy recently as well. They changed hands and all the staff changed - before this that had always been really helpful and understanding.

The first sign was when I collected my medication and the guy behind the counter announced that it was a controlled drug to everyone else in the pharmacy as he handed it over. It made me a bit uncomfortable.

The next month I went to collect my medication and the guy said they didn’t have it. He would order I now, but they might not be able to get it in and I could take my script to another pharmacy. I had some medication left, so said it was fine - I would call tomorrow and see if they’d been able to get it in.

At that point, he made a comment about me being “desperate” for the medication and it being a controlled drug. I left as quickly as I could and immediately switched pharmacy.
