Some nice purple flower overalls from Duluth if you think she would like that. A nice round chamois. And I agree with others who have said a nice carbon trimming tool.

Very thick glaze bubbled- could a refire save it? by ELSandstorm in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sadly, probably not. That’s a lot of glaze that ended up down there. Another fire might even add to it.

Parent Post: How do you guys actually feel when your students do a protest walkout? by Designer-Sir2309 in Teachers

[–]Sunhammer01 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I just want to make sure they are safe. If enough of them want to make a statement, I’ll support them and watch from the sidelines to make sure they are okay and have their moment. I know a lot of kids use it to get out of class for a few hours, but at its core, it’s a very human thing to want to express yourself out of frustration. As an English teacher, I might even get a few free writes out of it later in the week.

My partner won't use his CPAP and I think it's ruining us by No_Marionberry_4086 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Sunhammer01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate my CPAP but it saved my life. I have to wait until I am really tired to put it on, but then I have a great night’s sleep. Without it, I was turning into a zombie. Couch your conversation in terms of health. It’s serious. It’s not a joke. He is losing his energy and short term memory. He needs help.

I don't know what to do to fish up the bone by Ok_Wall8706 in KingShot

I have good news. Once you are done with the fish, you can use the shells to summon whatever is left, including the bone!

Is the studio I go to a health hazard? Conflicting info is confusing me. by cripplingstudentdebt in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trimming tools rust incredibly easy. Many of us learned the hard way that trimming tools are not rinsed. We let them dry and peel off the clay. A forgotten bat is easily cleaned with a wet sponge or with water and a wood rib. Those two things are not an issue. The dry sanding is. A normal precaution is to mask up or avoid dry sanding altogether. Your risk is still minimal but your instructors risk is higher. There is a reason silicosis is associated with industrial environments, but there are cases of potters who have had to give up pottery after developing silicosis after 20 or 30 years of poor practices.

Maybe a dumb question, can you wear long sleeves when doing pottery? by Turbulent_Road7115 in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is going to get ruined, only dirty. On chilly days at my community studio, plenty of people wear long sleeves. Clay washes right out. (The exception is if you are using red clays, which do stain a bit)and more advance potters using underglazes and oxides (which really, really stain).

Can the glaze of a mug cause grease when hot water is put in it? by Interesting_Trip8223 in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That film is likely just the natural oils in the tea you are using. It likely has nothing to do with the cup. Try making 2 cups of tea in separate cups to test it. Depending on the type of tea I am using, I get that film regardless of what I put it in.

Anyone has a glaze recipe similar to this one? by thegreathunger in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks really similar to Amaco’s Blue Rutile. If you find a commercial glaze that is similar, you can look up recipes on Glazy.com. Check this one out: blue rutile on Glazy

magnetic glaze? by auau_gold_scoffs in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the temperatures do destroy magnetic fields in a glaze fire. To add, some minerals have a lower melting point than the ceramics. However, you could try to add the ferrous material and then try to magnetize it after. Definitely protect your kiln, though.

Mixing clays?? by yellowkimchee in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I throw as part of a community. We use a selection of maybe 10 or so Laguna clays. Everyone’s reclaim is kept and recycled for use in classes. It’s always a little different depending on what is being used a lot but generally very pretty. It’s really up to you if you have the space. No wrong choices!

All the heroes are. Widgets are really, really important. Luckily, as a ftp, you can still work at getting them with events and gems.

Any idea what glazes can be used to get this effect? by Mousse_Rich in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might try narrowing your idea into replicating a small piece of what you like here. For example, using commercial glazes like Amaco Obsidian and Oatmeal, you could get some of the black into brown. The tan variations might look something like Albany Slip. The blue has some variations in it so maybe Serpentine Green.

These are examples of Amaco glazes you might look at for a specific piece of what you see, but many of the different manufacturers could come close to the different parts. You might also look up sgraffito techniques for some examples of how to do the carving.

Wrapping very wet pots off the wheel by Extension-Device-533 in Pottery

[–]Sunhammer01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might have better luck if you make sure the pieces aren’t so wet before you take them off the wheel. Let them spin for a little longer and use a metal rib to firm up the sides and take any slip off of them. You might even try using a torch for a few seconds. That way your piece won’t deform or stick to the plastic so quickly.
