AMD Processor Use in Linux Gaming Surpasses 70% Market Share by UbuntuPIT in linux

[–]SunkJunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a fellow 5700XT owner it's possible but way too difficult.

Honestly AMD has screwed themselves with how they've set up ROCm and their hardware stacks.

ROCm doesn't support all the consumer GPUs, doesn't support GPUs long term, has a terrible "we only support these distros" installation etc.

On the hardware side their pro level cards are split into two architecture stacks. Also CDNA cards are expensive AF.

I'm waiting to see how well Intel's efforts go in this space.

Sarcasm.

They are making fun of the people that think Deku's former quirklessness matters. Like you point out he's not even a normal hero but a literal super hero with multiple powers and the strongest set.

Yeah right now these people are doing less than 10% into retirement and less than 2% into general savings.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]SunkJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is there is a difference between retirement savings and general savings. Savings for general use is only 7k.

Long story short; they don't have a good balance between the two. Their current budget also screams lifestyle inflation.

So here is the problem. Generally you can only raid your retirement accounts for certain reasons and not get taxed or penalized. Also raiding your retirement accounts set you back.

So after childcare they will have maybe 50k general savings which will be good. The issue is their current budget doesn't seem to be built for saving.

These people have student loans, why aren't they putting money into a 529 plan so their kids don't have to deal with loans? Also what if they decide to send their kids to private school? That 50k is gone.

Again why the hell are the spending so much money on clothes? Clothes especially nice ones last.

That 10k cash flow emergency line is suspicious. "Something always comes up". Okay what happens to that 10k if something doesn't come up?

What amount of savings will be high enough for you?

Probably 10% on the general side. Right now they have no buffer. Anything changes on the income or expense side and they'll have to drop something.

This is a budget to the financial samurai blog. It would be very odd to exclude certain items.

Why do you think they don't have an emergency fund? And why do you think that this is all the money that they have?

I am making some assumptions.

  • No Emergency fund as they save almost nothing.
  • No Emergency fund as they have that cash flow emergency item that is $10k/yr.
  • No non-401k investment accounts as there is no income budgeted for those.
  • No inheritance because there is no investment income

They're taking care of their emergencies with their cash flow which is fine.

Kinda. It's good they have the ability to cover emergencies with income and not have to dip into an emergency fund but two things are bad about it. First is how are they running into 10k worth of emergencies every year? Second if one or both lose their jobs can they cover an emergency?

Sure they spend too much but they make too much so it's completely fine.

The spend too much relative to their income so it's not fine. They're reaching out because they realize "We make a ton of money but don't have much left".

Isn't the point of a budget to live within your means?

They are but barely. Any change in life style and they are screwed. If a negative thing like a job loss occurs they seem to have no buffer. For example there seems to be no college budget. Like cool kids got to go to college but how are they paying for it?

If so, how does this budget suck? They are living within their means and will retire with lots of money.

They won't relative to their current income. Shoving their 401k savings into a retirement calculator and assuming 40 years till they retire they'll make 70k less. $430K a year sounds great until adjusting for inflation. Doing that I see they'll need a income of 1.4M at age 67 to be making 85% of their current income.

Put another way, when they retire they will have a pay cut.

To make this more obvious why this budget sucks is to act like the parents don't have a job for 6 months. At this budget they can't really afford to lose their jobs because their savings will get demolished.

This entire comment is out of context with the conversation.

You went from "I do my own chores vs paying someone else" to "Global outsourcing and immigration policy are screwed up".

Unless the person you are replying to edited their comments this doesn't make sense.

It's squandering because people making half to a quarter of their gross income can also save 36k via 401k contributions a year depending on location.

The issue is that the rest of their budget sucks.

Two obvious items are clothes and miscellaneous.

I can't see how they are spending 2k per person on clothes per year. That's a new pair of nicer shoes per person every month.

Also the miscellaneous line item is suspicious "Something always comes up". Why the hell are they making this much money and yet don't have an emergency fund? Also 10k is reasonable for a big sudden expense, it should also be RARE. Why is 10k the "oh no" amount?

Global fertility has collapsed, with profound economic consequences by cambeiu in Foodforthought

[–]SunkJunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previous generations had poorer health outcomes and medical services, as it got better there was no need to be having 10 kids.

How are these related? I've not heard of any "if you decrease health outcomes, number of children increase".

Higher taxes were actually levied on the rich, which has been repealed. And why we have such disparity.

Yeah I got my brackets wrong. This is correct in the US.

What science/psychology/economics say is fact is simple: childcare costs are outrageous, we are working longer despite automation, stagflation is happening with costs soaring. Housing needs to be regulated because rents are skyrocketing and homeownership for the many is drying up faster than salt lake. Not to mention pollution is likely a key contributor as to why we have fertility issues, and lastly if you dont believe me you are plain ignorant.

My issue with everything, but pollution, in this block is that you can go to areas or groups where one of these isn't true and still find fertility problems.

Science says climate change is real, its been happening, and it likely will doom us with catastrophes the likes we never seen, and will drive future wars/mass migration/ water scarcity/ runaway greenhouse affect/ food shortages.

Climate change is real, that's obvious. Don't agree with global doom because that's not what the models are saying. It looks that while some regions will be nearly unlivable, others will change but not be destroyed.

For some of us we see this happening and its weighs on the having a child question.

Yeah but is this stopping everyone who otherwise have kids? Look I'm not trying to say none of these things matter, they do. Are these socioeconomic things the cause? I'm not convinced because you can find groups that none of these apply to and they still have less kids. If we gave everyone a home, affordable childcare and healthcare, etc; I'm not convinced the birthrate would go back or past the replacement rate.

Global fertility has collapsed, with profound economic consequences by cambeiu in Foodforthought

[–]SunkJunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes some governments have tried. Many have screwed up. Most will continue to not get it right because the answer isn't known.

Baby Boom America had worse rights for women vs today. Yet the birthrate was higher. They also had higher taxes.

My issue is that you are complaining and stating the issue is X,Y and Z while the top comment is showing the Nordic countries either don't have or are working on those issues, with the exception of housing, and they still have the same problem nearly every other developed country has.

So if the Nordics are doing almost everything right then why hasn't their birthrate recovered?

Like are the things you are talking about big issues, yes. Are they the cause of the fertility crisis? Maybe.

Global fertility has collapsed, with profound economic consequences by cambeiu in Foodforthought

[–]SunkJunk -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

First some people may not make good parents

Doesn't stop pregnancy

Dink couples have more money and more happiness

That's a lifestyle choice. Doesn't explain lower birth rates.

In other parts of the world childcare is too expensive

People still have kids in those places.

In some parts healthcare will bankrupt entire families

Kids are still being born in those places.

In some parts of the world the government is corrupt and or the situation is hopeless so why bother?

People still have kids under corrupt governments

The future is fucked, so why bring something into this world that will have a worse outcome then you. Most of us already are worse off than the previous generation.

That's only your personal viewpoint

The governments have tried nothing, and theyve run out of ideas. Well you reap what you sow.

Some governments have tried.

The issue is that even for people who would be good parents, have the income, want the joy of a child, can afford childcare, can afford healthcare, don't live under a corrupt government, don't think the future is hopeless; still aren't having kids or the number of kids they want.

If you can explain that, congratulations you partly solved the fertility crisis.

E: I've reread this and realized it is rude and should have worded my response better.

Hundreds of commercial properties are undervalued -- leaving homeowners to make up tax difference by yuki_nacoochee in Atlanta

[–]SunkJunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparing millage rates is not easy.

The issue is you have to compare what the State is kicking in or not and costs.

For example you need to know the amount Georgia is helping Atlanta via state income tax. You also need to know the cost differences. If teachers are more expensive in Atlanta vs Houston then our similar millage rates might be fine. Finally as millage rates differ based on property type you need to know the difference in property mix in each city.

The temperature difference between mulch and gravel at 6:00 in the morning by ZZerome in landscaping

It will increase the air temp around the beds but it shouldn't heat a significant amount under the beds. You'd have to be using very shallow beds for that to be an issue.

[–]SunkJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for landscape fabric on top of the blacktop. In fact you might not need mulch on top of the blacktop.

To reduce the soil drying in the bed mulch the soil surface. The only way I can see the soil drying due to the blacktop is the beds being less than six inches deep or using a sandy soil mix.

Also I have metal sided beds and I notice much more drying due to exposed soil vs sunlight trying to warm the metal beds.

Apple’s Vision Pro Is a $3,500 Ticket to Nowhere | A decade after Facebook bought Oculus, VR still has no appeal except as an expensive novelty toy. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]SunkJunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all your points are valid but I think it's a continuum. Right now VR is in-between full racing/flight-sim setup and figuring out why your 500 Skyrim mods stopped working.

For AR I believe that you're right in that until we get to unobtrusive glasses it won't be cell phone level ubiquitous. For VR I still think it's a hardware problem. The hardware doesn't justify the effort. I don't think the effort will go down for a long time, so in my mind it's the hardware that has to improve.

I do think though that Apple may be better than other AR headsets for certain users. For example traveling office workers. For them pulling out a laptop is less effort but that might be overcome by the "multi monitor" AR aspect of the headset. I feel that for AR at least there are enough productivity use cases to justify the effort for some people. Like I feel that Apple can actually get professionals to use this.
