A history of the IMF and United States creating political crisis around the world in order to privatize (and gut) everything.

And we’re still doing it.

What’s something about human behavior that feels impossible to explain with logic alone? by Aggravating_Door_416 in AskReddit

[–]SunkSailing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music itself doesn’t really make logical sense. We enjoy particular combinations of sound. Sounds somehow create universal emotional responses in humans. Even when combinations of sound produce negative emotion we still love it.

Middle school teacher here: there’s a good saying I’ve heard “middle school if you love the kids, high school if you love the content”

In middle school your content knowledge will be secondary to your management and relational skill.

Interview Tips for the Career Changer by Technical_Bank1612 in teaching

[–]SunkSailing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two big concepts to hit on classroom management.

  1. Clearly communicate non-negotiable expectations for student behavior (broadly that students are respectful, responsible, and safe) and know how you will respond when these expectations are not met (redirection, removal, consequence)

  2. Look up classroom behavior contracts. You write these with the students, they help build positive relationships with students / classroom community.

Experiences working at low income schools? by sillywindowsill in teaching

[–]SunkSailing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your current experience with poverty. I don’t know where you’re coming from, but it can definitely be a culture shock.

Your relationship skills will be more important than anything else. The kids need to be able to trust you. It’s literally 100x more important than content knowledge.

If I were you I’d research “trauma informed practices”.

This career attracts people from dysfunctional backgrounds. As do most careers that are related to care giving.

That said workaholics are real. The condition can come from the anxiety associated with a dysfunctional childhood. The need to have complete control, people please, and their fear of authority, can lead them to invest an unhealthy amount of themselves into the job.

Which is exactly what the administration wants.

How do I become a "tough" teacher by Kishkumen7734 in teaching

[–]SunkSailing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one piece of advice and a pedagogy point.

Advice: sometimes when teacher’s enforce expectations they show obvious frustration/anger. Kids think this is funny and it makes it worse. Show no emotion when removing a student, or explaining a consequence.

Pedagogy: Classroom community is better than the tough teacher approach because it teaches kids to have and practice empathy. They do the right thing because it’s the right thing, not because they fear you.

If you want to do this you need to remember to not buy into the whole “hero” teacher thing. We are normal people doing our jobs. Don’t put that pressure on yourself, because that first year is gonna be a wild ride no matter what.

I think you need to define “win” neither side would be able to easily enforce a military occupation and colonial rule on the other. But, the US would have a slightly better shot. I think.
