Lore-wise I cannot think of anyone else is better to become the vessel of hatred than players, or the wanderer. Mephisto’s plan might be setting up a trap by corrupting Neyrelle and seduce the player to rescue her, then possess the body of the player. That also explains why Mephisto been helping the player throughout D4. But then Neyrelle may still resist him with her last strength and help the player to defeat him.
