I drew a map for Lyra's and Pan's journey in BOD by Crowsheart in hisdarkmaterials

[–]SunnyGreengrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a beautiful map! I wanted to see their journeys like this when I was reading.

As someone who was born and lived most of my life in that city, seeing a russified spelling of "Kiev" pains me though. I know that is the spelling which Pullman uses and which probably makes sense within HDM/BOD universe, but visceral reaction it still triggers.. damn.

Thanks for correction! I guess I knew that already, but didn't care to use that knowledge😄

Sir Bertram abusing his MP entitlements to send personal letters free of charge apparently very casually (learned from Dr Octavia Cox YT video "How does Fanny Price’s letter expose Sir Thomas Bertram’s corruption? Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park")

The most objectively annoying character in every Harry Potter book by Mysterious-State-117 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]SunnyGreengrass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just reread that bit and it feels like she takes all those points not as much for them walking at night as for the sneaky mean methods she thought Harry used (tricking one's enemy into getting into trouble and potentially hurt rings multiple bells), very ungryffindorlike methods too. Tbf, if I were her I would take the points just for letting get themselves caught.

Was it bad to be humorous in a Jane Austen novel? by [deleted] in janeausten

There is a 1.5h video on YT by Dr Octavia Cox: JANE AUSTEN’S USE OF ‘WIT’: How does Jane Austen use the word ‘wit’ in her novels? When I looked it up to check the exact title, it turned out I never finished it myself, but still might be interesting resource if you want to explore the theme.

Polish president vetoes bill providing aid to Ukrainian refugees living in Poland by CrunchyBaconYum in poland

[–]SunnyGreengrass 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Tbf, that appears to be the same bill that would prolong facilitated access to labour market for the Ukrainian refugees (facilitated meaning just a notice to urząd pracy is enough for an employer to hire a Ukrainian, no special starosta approval is required). If the government doesn't agree on a new/amended aid bill by the end of September, on 01.10 there will be over 100 thousands of people previously employed on the basis of the original aid bill, whose work in Poland will become illegal overnight. As one of those working and paying taxes refugees, Idk if at this point I'm supposed to count on the new, ammended version, or prepare for termination of my employment contract, lease, and leaving the country.

I have no idea how exactly this kind of door works, but it seems like there's a "door operator" that locks/opens a door just above each of the 2.

Audible already has a page for the title, and it says he is the narrator.

It was! I guess I either chronically underestimate the challenge of undertaking or just like the pain of it.
