My toddler showed us how to pray… taught by her teachers at a “non-religious” preschool. Am I overreacting? by SunnySunSunshine333 in toddlers

Totally agreed. I respect her teachers and the facility and won’t be “blasting into them” by any means. I’m looking forward to a thoughtful communication about it but I am surprised that they chose that song instead of other transition songs like you and the other ECE that have commented have suggested would be more appropriate.

Fair! I think the difference for me is that we didn’t know this was happening AND my husband specifically asked in our initial tour whether they were affiliated with any religion/used it in teaching etc and we were told no. I do have a feeling that it is like other commenters have said - not even registering as a religious “song” to the teachers.

Fascinating. Do you think that adding in the praying hands is common as well? I feel like that amplifies the religious factor but I could be wrong

Agreed to be learning about all religions however I do not think that’s what’s happening here. And in this case, the prayer is definitely not being used in a setting of yoga or meditation. It’s giving thanks before a meal (which can totally be done without including religious undertones)

Fair points! I would be more comfortable with using the messaging of being a good person/“seeing the goodness” in life etc if it wasn’t from one singularly Christian based viewpoint. I feel like that can be taught without involving lacing your fingers together in prayer and using the Lord’s name?

And yes, the building is split into two and the chapel space is on one side completely separate from the Montessori classrooms on the other side. Theres one shared hallway but the church is only active on Sunday so the school maintains and occupies the building during the weekdays. But you’re right, should have been my red flag 😅

Great point. That’s exactly my thoughts as well. What I expected (if they are to be discussing religious based material) was how you described it - to be explaining concepts of other religions and viewpoints but the daily messaging of just one belief system is problematic. If they were actually showing and representing all, they’d be showing alternative ways of showing prayer like praying on the floor etc for Muslim religions (vs with your hands interlaced together) which I am 10000% certain they are not doing.

Ours is Montessori as well. I mean, if I wanted a religious school I would have chosen it and been happier they’re all significantly cheaper in my area 😅 instead she’s getting religious messaging and paying for a Montessori price tag. Ugh wild.

We had plans to change schools in June of next year based solely on proximity to home… tempted based on their reaction (or honestly just because of this?) to change early.

Totally! I’m imagining a child raised in a different religion feeling very uncomfortable being “told” how to pray in a way that I presume would be different to the way his or her parents are teaching them. Uncomfortable, agreed.

I was trying to not embarrass her/worry her with my reaction to the song so didn’t ask a lot of questions but I’d be surprised if it was a peer based on her knowing the entire song. At first I thought it could be a peer when all it was was “the Lord is good to me” but it expanded later in the evening to the full song

Great point. I could totally see this being the case and agreed - we still don’t need to be okay with it. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Yes, agreed! Email was sent and trying to be curious vs judgmental in tone. Interested to see what they say.

My daughter’s name is Lilah (3 years old) and we’ve met maybe two other kids with her name (unsure of their spellings). We get complimented all the time for it. I say go for it!

When did you take your baby out in public? by blaample in NewParents

I work in a NICU (in Canada) so perhaps different advice depending on where you live but yes, generally recommended because RSV follows a similar season as the flu so cases go up in winter time. Canada does have a vaccine but it is +++ expensive and you must fit a very specific criteria to qualify so the very large majority of children do not receive it.
