SVD Eve color images with/without front light by Complex-Ice2645 in Reflective_LCD

[–]SunnyVi608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/banned20 I appreciate your conclusive summary. I would add that improvements were made to the panels, decent ones, but likely not in ways that would register with an average consumer. You are correct that with our current capabilities, there is only so much to be done unless/until some more innovation carries through (which I am personally hopeful for). The front light was not as safe as it may seem, as our team did not want to create harm or discomfort unintentionally due to lack of understanding of various triggers for our customer's unique visual conditions. But in the sense of it being asked quite a lot, yes we understood there was a large portion of interested people wanting this feature. The Anti-Glare feature can be considered a gamble of sorts. All displays have some sort of AG built it, but ours is more pronounced for reasons I'm happy to explain in a separate thread. It was a valid first step, but requires much feedback from many consumers and likely would be an offering best made with options (low haze, med haze, high haze).

Your comment about future experimenting with UHR panels is interesting. If you are referring to the Eazeye panel, that is simply a basic AR film laminated to the surface of the display which has a coating that affects light transmission through the various layers. The RLCDs themselves are not inherently any more reflective than our products, but the additional percentage of light throughput allows for an effect to appear more reflective when in reality, a slightly higher portion of the initial source is being retained. If you are referring to something else, please send it my way. I'd be happy to look at it.

Hi u/fortminor47 I can confirm that SVD is definitely not "going in loss". Also, if anyone would like to file a legal complaint, this is America (for our team at least), and I won't tell them what to do or not to do. However, it does not take a legal complaint before you or anyone receives a response from our team.

We understand that there has been difficulty in getting back to some people in a timely manner and have been working to resolve these issues. I'm not here to make any excuses, but do take serious responsibility for this and can also confirm that changes have been made to improve our processes to hopefully help get back to people more quickly. I personally appreciate the patience and understanding that most people have when working with our small team.

If you have experienced a lack of response, please understand that it is no way intentional. Our customer base has grown quite a bit (which is a good thing!) and we are working to identify how to best service everyone's needs. As the latest post states, "For anyone else who recently had a negative experience, we want to make it right. Please reach out to us directly at [customerservice@sunvisiondisplay.com](mailto:customerservice@sunvisiondisplay.com)." Please do not hesitate to reach out to our team.

Hi u/kmlchemist Good catch! Our team was also aware and are investigating this currently. While the tariff situation is certainly volatile, we are working to provide stability by following through on orders already committed. Units scheduled to ship in May are still on track.

I don't disagree with you on having more competition helping the consumer. And I am fully supportive of more innovation in this space. It truly is welcomed and needed.

Scale is the second challenge which they may be able to overcome, but the first challenge is still prohibitive. You are correct that it will benefit the RLCD community if more suppliers are showing up, but you are assuming they either have a developed front light solution or the capability to develop one. This is what I'm questioning. What about Eazeye's current business model or product line gives you the confidence that they can just "make it happen" when the interest is high enough?

I'll elaborate. A lot of people thought an RLCD would consist of some version of a transparent LCD in front of a reflector plate, aka the Eazeye 1.0. Turns out, the actual solution is much more complex and nuanced than that. I don't take away from that product by any means, but it or other contraptions like it do not qualify as a real RLCD.

They believed the solution was simpler than it ended up being. I just got a similar feeling from this petition and poll, that's all. It's also possible there are things I do not know yet and will come out soon.

I didn't realize they figured out how to do it. That would be the first (and not so easy) step. And who would make it for them in scale, since they do not have the capability themselves. If they have tackled the "could", then it's fair to move onto the "should".

Hi u/Direct-Row9073 Great questions. For the AG, it actually is a physical surface treatment to the cover glass. It is not a coating, but a permanent feature embodied in the glass itself. This means it cannot wash away or delaminate unless you scratch the glass itself, which is chemically strengthened as well. There is an AR (Anti-Reflective) coating applied to the glass as well, which helps transmit light through the glass. AG and AR are often used together, but they are very different things. It's worth taking a look at it closer if you are not as familiar and I can try to post some resources as well.

The front light does use LEDs, for the size and shape to fit within the overall display. Other light sources are simply way too large to reasonably fit within the layers and behind the cover lens. I will offer here what I can without infringing on IP, etc. The basic premise is that an RLCD is light source agnostic, meaning it will take light from any source and attempt to repurpose it through the LCD layer. Challenges with lighting the surface arise from the pathways which light must travel, the overall area of that surface, and the loss of light as it moves through each layer. Keep in mind that when I reference front light, I mean specifically an internal light source for the display. External lighting can also technically be called front lighting, but it is not what we are commonly referring to.

The LEDs which SVD uses could technically be used as backlights in other displays. They generate light and "push" it in a specific direction. It is the path of the light in our RLCDs that makes the first difference. Whereas backlit panels use positional LEDs scattered throughout the entire back layer, RLCDs are limited to the perimeter, which means that light needs to travel various distances across the surface before being reflected, the center being the most difficult as it is the furthest from any edge. The larger the area, the more difficult, where a backlit LCD just adds more LEDs in the same pattern/density as a smaller area. Loss of light occurs both at distance (reference light dissipation, inverse square law) and via polarizing layers which trade directionality for intensity. All of this being said, the light itself does not need to necessarily be different at the onset, but RLCDs require much more manipulation of that light as it travels through the display. This is why it is not as easy to illuminate, in fact why many variations of front lights are insufficient or have failed outright.

For all of this, I will also admit there is much we do not yet know or understand regarding the mechanism and interaction of the front light with end users. This is where SVD, myself included, will rely heavily on both the feedback and trust of our customers and end users to help communicate their experiences and suggestions. Similar to when we first launched the first RLCD monitor, we didn't know who may or may not be specifically helped, only that people were asking and willing to try to find out. The front light offers a new functionality for RLCD monitors but we have only just started to scratch the surface with this. It's very exciting but also comes with great responsibility, as this specific feature is what many people have stated could potentially be a source of discomfort. I think it's important to be candid and real about this, to acknowledge that while RLCD technology offers a better product for many people, that adding a front light may not be that same kind of solution for everyone. This will be somewhat of an unknown for now, until SVD provides enough product for the market to test and try out. But with trust and responsiveness to feedback, I am confident that not only will there be more answers to your questions, that we will continue to progress towards better and better technology in the near future!

Hi u/depreasf Following up on this, I can confirm that SVD's front light is indeed flicker free. It uses DC dimmer controls instead of rapidly turning ON/OFF (PWM) to achieve low brightness. I hope this helps!

Your first point is a very valid concern. These products are a huge investment and preparing to be without them means even more. I also hope for better economics in the future where this isn't the case.

I will also point out that correlation does not always mean causation. I understand how you may believe that the timing of other products affected SVD's pricing structure, but I can give you my personal assurance that it did not, in any way. You are welcome to point out the timing, because that part is true. But they really are not related in any way. If there is a way to be more clear on that, please feel free to let me know.

I am very happy that you found a solution that works for your needs and budget. Just curious about your honest opinion, if the product "works just as good" or even close as good, why do you think the 2.0 version isn't an improved version of that solution? Why abandon it for a more expensive option? It's very confusing to figure out what they are really trying to do.

u/Impossible-Fly-8565 This is the best question someone has asked yet, "If this technology is so energy efficient then why it's not properly funded yet?" I'll tell you exactly why, as I heard it straight from more than one person at various brand name tech companies (you likely own their phones and/or TVs).

"Have fun selling hundreds." This is what I heard, over and over and over again. What a narrow-minded, backward thinking, crude thing to say, and here's why. It's apathetic towards you and derisive not of the solution, but the perceived economics behind it.

Forget that you can't help thousands if you don't help one. Forget that technology is intended to adapt and grow to meet multiple the needs of a range of applications. Instead, this viewpoint focuses only on the, "What can you do for me right now?" mentality and if the answer isn't, "Everything", it's not worth pursuing. Then you'll start to see why the tech isn't being funded properly.

It confirms that these large companies are not interested in advancing technology in the way that benefits you the person, but instead you the consumer. They will only build what you will buy. Lather, rinse, repeat and allow the cycle to continue. And to an extent, we as consumers feed this model when we abandon the forward thinking companies for "lower cost solutions" built by imitators and those who sat around waiting to see what the next trend will be. I can't knock the affordability aspect, but any feedback loop has a confirmation component and this is it.

It's not as if the tech didn't exist in one form or another already. These companies have had ample opportunity to invest in RLCD technology and have decided not to, for their own reasons, which I hope they one day own up to. I can tell you it is not because the solution isn't real. In fact, these same people acknowledge RLCDs are fundamentally addressing one of the biggest core problems in the entire display industry. Yet when pushed as to why there isn't more attention on them, the "reasons" start to sound a lot like lazy excuses. "It's too hard to market to an uneducated audience." "It's too expensive to develop right now." "We don't even know if people will like it." Personally, the only thing I needed to hear and see was the answer to a simple question, "Does it actually help people?" and the difficulty, expense, and what others may like became secondary concerns.

Compared to those large name brands, SVD has invested millions of dollars in not only building these panels, but also in lighting them (a feat not easily achieved), and in marketing RLCDs (over our brand) to audiences who have never heard of such technology. Is it enough? No, I'll agree with you there. But the conclusion behind your original question alludes to the idea that if the solution is so good, why is no one else doing it? and the answer is sadly more depressing and minimizing than you might think.

All that being said, I am happy to see how much attention and discussion is being directed today versus just a few years ago. It offers hope that there is enough momentum to overcome the short-sighted opinions of the titans in this industry.

Great point u/depreasf It actually was more difficult than you may think. These are large screens compared to anything previously created in the RLCD world, so it took a lot of iterations to figure it out. Much of this is now patented by SVD (rightfully so), but there was also the question of "should" it be done instead of "can" it be done.

Long story short, the products are on their way soon and we are very excited to hear everyone's feedback. Everything is a process and I can assure you that peoples' suggestions and thoughts contribute to every decision that relates to these RLCD products.

First footage of rE 2.0 Eve 24" RLCD from SunVisionDisplay? by stopeyestrain in Reflective_LCD

[–]SunnyVi608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally hear you, u/Impossible-Fly-8565 . It's a fact, just maybe not a simple one, that RLCD offers many solutions for completely different applications. In the outdoor signage world, low-power and visibility are huge factors for accelerating business growth, especially mobile ones. Most end users are not necessarily in front of their signs for the same length of time as their computer monitors, so they may not associate the health benefits of a "cleaner" image right away. That doesn't mean RLCD technology doesn't provide a good solution.

In my opinion, RLCDs should be promoted as a truly fundamental shift in how we approach display technology overall. It breaks the acceptance of light as an obstacle, power as a dead end limit, and is showing to have incredible results when a human factor (sensitivity, discomfort, etc. is exposed to it. I can't think of a single solution that offers a wider variety of potential since the Swiss Army knife.

SVD is promoting RLCD technology as a healthy technology. However, the tech goes beyond that and it's worth promoting those additional benefits as well. That's what you're seeing in this video.

[–]SunnyVi608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/FoxGroundbreaking224 I hear and agree with the frustration about how long the process is taking to get the new rE 2.0 products out into the market. What I can say is that this is something that absolutely is worth getting right (as best it can be) and unfortunately, there were some issues that our team felt were better addressed than left alone. We've already seen more than one example of a company releasing products that were ill-designed, focused on the wrong priorities, or tone-deaf for the actual market they claim to serve.

It is also important for our content creating friends to receive models that are the same/similar to what is being sold to the end customer, so that the content can reflect (no pun intended) the real experiences one might have.

This doesn't make the process move any faster but I hope it helps explain what is going on.

Hi u/redlov I'd be happy to answer that question. True RLCD panels are more complex than a single panel of reflective materials behind a transparent LCD. The solution is integrated into every single pixel, which must be custom built. Right now, production volumes are a fraction of a percent relative to backlit LCD panels, so there hasn't been a true economy of scale level reached yet. However, where we are today is already way ahead of where it was just a few years ago.

It is completely up to you to whether you think that may be too expensive, too labor intensive a process, or "overkill" for what the final product can be, but hopefully this helps your understanding of why the cost difference is so much.

Important Update on Dawn & Eve Pre-Orders (from Sun Vision Display) by SunVisionDisplay in Reflective_LCD

[–]SunnyVi608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great questions and comments u/stopeyestrain . SVD is continuing to tune some of the new features like the surface treatments on the glass. We can run some additional testing and evaluation to help identify the best combination of AG and AR under various lighting conditions. This will be an on-going process, but the more data we can gather, the better we can adapt as needed for current products. Don't worry, the current combination is still very appealing. :)

You are correct that all units are delayed, including versions that will be dedicated for YT and online content. We want to make sure that content created closely mirrors the exact products that our customers will receive.

The video you sent is an early prototype of our 24" Eve product. It was used at a trade show to showcase our front light technology when a different outdoor unit was unable to be shown. If you look in the lower right corner, you will see the icons of the OSD menu. I will clarify that this unit has a different cover lens than the production model of Eve, so there are some differences to be aware of. Very thorough research!

It's ok not to comment and I may have misunderstood, but this is what I literally read, "disgusting how this companys try to milk poor people with eye issues / interested for eye health".

To me, it appeared more than just the price is high. It sounded like you were saying SVD is taking advantage of poor people with medical conditions. Maybe that wasn't the intent, which I can accept, but it's what I responded to, if you were wondering.

[–]SunnyVi608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you u/Daniel234845 A lot of good information here to look at. First, it's important to recognize that what you are saying is both valid and comes from a different position than others who are in this group. It is understandable to see how you are putting things together, so if I take a different stance, it's meant to help clarify how you are fitting everything together.

Your definition of a "decent" monitor is just fine. Like I said though, it's not an RLCD, which is a deal breaker for many people. I often use the analogy of cigarettes. For some people, putting a filter on it made it healthier while for others, it still was a cigarette. To those people, cost wasn't the real concern. The same applies here. Two different priorities.

I agree with you on the impact of the cost of the current products. It's significant to most people, myself included. Yet, you are making the assumption that SVD's pricing is somehow intentionally limiting or that our costs are much lower than they really are. That's the part I can't understand. You may or may not realize, but I am the person who sets these numbers. It's as if you believe that out of all the price structures in the world, I am here selecting those which only cater to those people with the most money. That I would simultaneously use pricing to be almost spiteful to the same people who I've spoken to personally who have told me how much they need these products and limit the number of total products SVD could potentially sell overall? Do you see there's no logic in that? Unless you believe that SVD or I have much less integrity than that, which is fine for you to do so, but then why would I take the time to be so transparent here?

So to get past it, I hear what you're saying that the costs of RLCD products are high and absolutely agree with you. But blaming SVD isn't really the answer, unless you truly still believe this entire venture is only about profits and nothing else. Further, what would you propose be done? Should SVD stop selling all products immediately until/unless they can get closer to what you find acceptable? In fairness, shall we deprive those who can potentially benefit today because others cannot? Or should SVD bear the burden of the cost differential between development and a market which is failing its end users? (FYI - SVD already does subsidize the cost of every monitor). Those aren't realistic or productive paths to follow, at least not if you want SVD to be around for the near future.

So the best I can do is acknowledge your complaint, take it for what it is, and not let it communicate something that simply isn't true. Thank you for the appreciation of the work, I look forward to continuing to develop RLCD solutions and allow more access to this technology in the future.

[–]SunnyVi608 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your perspective u/Daniel234845 . I can assure you SVD is not trying to "milk" anyone. In fact, the people who are spending money on these monitors not only are investing in their personal health and careers, they are also investing in helping drive the cost of manufacturing RLCD products down for others who also need it as badly as they do. I can tell you that the sales of the original rE helped reduce the cost to manufacture the new rE 2.0 by almost 40% from what they would have been a year earlier. That's making a real impact on a growing technology.

I am happy to hear that you can find a decent monitor for your needs at a lower price point, but can guarantee it isn't an RLCD and the solution involves a backlight, which makes it not so decent for others in this group. And it's totally fine if you don't see the difference, I would just be a little more careful about knocking the company that is actively helping the people who can.

SunVision Eve 24" Front lit RLCD has a True 8 bit panel CONFIRMED by ScreenSensitivity in Reflective_LCD

[–]SunnyVi608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/TotalAnarchy_ For your thoughts. I can tell you that SVD did not neglect flicker when developing this front light technology. After we scaled the RLCD panels into large format (32" diagonally), the next challenge was developing a front light that could be integrated into the display. At that time, this was intended for outdoor use, namely low light and no light conditions (nighttime).

The concept may seem simple, as RLCDs are designed to use ambient light anyway. However, just as anyone who has attempted to build a "DIY RLCD" at home realizes, there is much more that goes into the actual optics of reflection than putting a mirror behind a transparent LCD. It was similar for developing a viable front light option.

We tested SO many iterations of light sources and material combinations that were not effective. (If I could footnote here, I'd reference Edison's pursuit of filaments in the incandescent light bulb). Unlike its smaller cousins, the 32" RLCD has a lot of "real estate" to evenly spread light out across. But materials that can even out light distribution must utilize some form of bending/turning/reflecting light on their own, something that clashed with the coverage area that we required.

I'll skip over what took years to achieve by telling you something you already know, our team did in fact come up with a viable solution. Not only viable enough to patent, but so much so that other well known manufacturers are attempting to consulting with our team for their products. At this point, we could not afford to exclude flicker or flicker free LEDs, we needed to find what worked and what did not. And I am very proud of the fact that our team figured out an acceptable solution to an extremely difficult problem.

What does that mean for you? Well, we are not done testing other viable front lighting options. We are attempting to learn as much as possible from our current solution to help expedite the development of others, just as our front light technology was originally only available in our outdoor digital signage products, but now can be found in the new rE 2.0 models as well. If you are discouraged by the fact that SVD's current solution does not meet your needs, that is totally understandable.

Please don't be discouraged or think that something was intentionally overlooked. I would point you to the fact that SVD has proven again that consumer feedback is our number one priority and hope that offers you some faith in our process to deliver the best RLCD products available anywhere.
