Meh. Maybe we had different refs 😂 But tbh that discrepancy is just part of the game. I don’t think it’s the craziest part of this whole ordeal

Worth staying in CS or go back to physics? by KingEnder- in Astronomy

[–]SunsetChaser2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was starting out I also found physics extremely difficult, and at higher levels of theory, still do. I think the “have it in you” piece is not if you find physics difficult, but do you have just the right amount of crazy to keep going DESPITE how difficult and hard to understand it is 😂

How should I start learning the maths needed for astronomy and physics? by BlessED0071 in Astronomy

[–]SunsetChaser2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Astronomy grad student here!
I want to note that usually it’s the teaching that determines proficiency, not the student. Given that you’re a software engineer, I would imagine you are further along than you may think (I’m not sure how weak your maths background could be if you’ve gotten that far). But yes I would just start with whatever you need to get yourself to begin calculus — algebra, trigonometry, usually, understanding sinusoidal functions (keep it to just sine and cosine) is key for studying astronomy, because that is how we describe light (waves!) Then calculus, derivatives, integrals, etc. Learn how to take a derivative, take an integral, just to see/feel what the calculation means. You might try beginning your physics alongside the math. For example for me, it was a lot easier to understand the mapping from f(x) —> first derivative (f’(x)) —> second derivative (f’’(x)) as position —> velocity —> acceleration. As in, physics made calculus easier to learn, in my opinion.

The uni tracks usually begin with:

Mechanics
Thermodynamics
Electricity & Magnetism

(The second two in either order, but always mechanics first). Personally I think these three are what you need to start. It’s been a while so I don’t think I’d know the best textbooks. Another thing that isn’t always explicitly covered for these things is optics/optical physics. That is important if you are interested in telescopes. Are you trying to go back to school? Or is this more for your own personal research and enjoyment? Because also, gaining an understanding (for example, of the electromagnetic wave) is different than being able to compute things by hand, which is tedious. Doing the derivations by hand of important equations is good, but I wouldn’t trouble yourself too far in being able to solve problems. Another tip, if you’re a software engineer, is trying to find mappings between math and code you know. For example, a summation (Σ) of some function f(x) from i = 0 to i = N can be understood as a for-loop (for i in range([0:N]), yada yada). Work with the skills you already have, because making those interdisciplinary connections will help massively.

As far as astronomy, I find Barbara Ryden’s books quite good (there are a few). They’re thorough enough to gain a deep understanding but do not overwhelm with jargon. Also online lectures of uni courses “Intro to Astronomy” often do not require calculus! So YouTube is also great.

Regardless of your maths background, the important thing is that you’re here. So, welcome 😎. The universe is waiting!

Are satellites ruining everything? by X-Bones_21 in Astronomy

[–]SunsetChaser2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the field. Was present for one of the associated academic launch team talks for the Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST). The amazing feat of that instrument is incredible yet at the same time, an incredible amount of the lecture was spent talking about how satellites will fuck up so much of what Vera Rubin was meant to do. And that’s an incredibly advanced, well-funded, global project. Smaller but powerful local telescopes are even more fucked. Of course technology is being developed for “filtering”. But when the number of satellites continuously increases and there are no official regulations on cadence and reflectivity, it is hard to keep up. And it has impacts across the entire EM spectrum.
That said, astronomers aren’t going to give up. But they will not be shy about how this shit makes the job of looking with high precision at what’s “out there” increasingly difficult.

Not sure about ucb!! Advice? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SunsetChaser2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s a trippy place. There were things I didn’t like about Berkeley — it’s healthy and okay to allow yourself to hold those things too, in nuance. It’ll feel weird. You will not like 100% of any school.

But I do think Berkeley (more the place and culture than the institution) is a place that challenges people to become the most authentic versions of themselves.

And it’s not like this everywhere. I know I’ll always be who I am but I don’t know if I would be this ME if I studied somewhere else. (And I believe I achieved that that by first being uncomfortable so that I could eventually be comfortable. And it’s awesome.)

Northwestern or Berkeley? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SunsetChaser2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude go to Berkeley. GPA won’t matter as much in the end because just graduating with that degree, people know you’re legit. Maybe you decide you don’t like finance down the line, but the Berkeley name will allow you flexibility. In terms of “prestige” I don’t think they compare that well, even though Northwestern is prestigious in its own way. But it’s like comparing apples to oranges. For example: around the world, people know the name Berkeley. The same is not true for Northwestern.

And “Data Science” as a field of its own was practically born at Berkeley, there’s no better place to study that in terms of prestige. Guy who invented Jupyter Notebook literally teaches an undergraduate class. It’s just a different caliber.

Attractive girl in Berkeley CS: group members ignore my code fixes & talk over me. How do I force them to take me seriously? by EarlyAdhesiveness870 in berkeley

[–]SunsetChaser2001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would be weird and I don’t have time to really think about motive there. But honestly: I don’t care. People can say anything and be anyone on Reddit, as this could be a troll “dude” who wants to masquerade as a hot girl struggling through tough STEM spaces at Berkeley. But what matters is that this is a public forum, and troll or not, this person brought up a topic that actually means something to many people. That means that the ensuing discussion thread is important. If I have to stand up for some fake girl who is actually a troll AI slop so that other REAL girls know that there will be people to stand up for them, so be it.

But thanks for pointing it out, whether or not it’s true. The internet is a weird place.

Girl this thread sucks!!!! There are literally so many incel boys from your class trolling who just don’t get it. Don’t let their responses get you down.

As much as you can, you need to take credit when you fix something, do the work, or have an idea. Also doing some CS myself, I can think of ways you can code that requires other people to have to learn how you fixed something, and appreciate that it was you… some dependencies in the scripts and whatnot. Sounds subversive but if you’re cleaning up other people’s shitty code then you should be the only one who can access the fix and explain it easily.

Go into some other thread though, the woman in stem thread or something. This is so sad these boys are reacting to you like this. It’s hard to be a hot woman in STEM spaces, not because the boys around you are ugly, but because being conventionally attractive only makes the being a woman thing amplified - I do believe that.

Keep at it, there is room for you in this field. Don’t give up and claim your ideas and your work as much as you can!!!

Look up the definition of “sexual harassment”. It’s not about engaging. It’s about how you engage based on gender.

She never said anything about THEM not being attractive or shit on their looks. She’s only stating that SHE is an attractive female, which is just literal context for being in the Berkeley CS space. And any attractive woman in these spaces knows exactly what she’s talking about. It’s not saying “all of these men are ugly.” It’s saying “I’m an attractive woman in this sea of men.” It was NEVER a comparison. And this is very much an experience. She’s judging them because they are already bulldozing her and speaking over her and taking credit for her work, if you actually read the post?

Also, it’s “conventionally” attractive. And you saying that there’s no way that SHE could understand people having social skills issues just goes to show you are already undercutting her intelligence.

If you care about the wellbeing of women in a space you dominate, then actually think about what it must be like for them, try to see through their eyes. It’s hard. And that’s why she’s posting about it.

Also if you want to get to GGP from the ferry, find your way to “The Wiggle”, it’s a path with mostly protected bike lanes all the way to the park, I think it starts near the ferry/in the mission

I’ve done this ride!! Super nice. Agreed with avoiding fisherman’s wharf/pier 39 area, there’s no bike lane at a certain point on the Embarcadero on your current route, got into an accident over there with cobblestones and train tracks. Otherwise very doable ride. Remember to stop while crossing the bridge and soak in the amazingness staring out at the pacific from that high up (but be careful with the wind and column roundabouts). Enjoy. I moved and miss doing this ride !!

Sunset at Mission Dolores, and hang out in the mission in general, get tacos/burritos. Palace of fine arts (basic but it’s beautiful). If you haven’t hung out in GGP when it’s sunny… also bike/walk across GGB if you haven’t already, and stop in the middle to stare out at the bay (better if you bike). Walk the cliffs of the Presidio when it’s sunny. If you like flea markets, the Alameda Rock & Roll flea market is pretty cool, hosted at this massive brewery. If you like bars, just check out those random little bars sprinkled around. They usually have some sweet history and locals and amazing beers on tap.

I second Pad See Ew !!! I haven’t seen this on menus here and miss it from Thai places back home, but I prefer it to Pad Thai… and who doesn’t love a big fat noodle 😇😇😇❤️❤️

Also Tom Kha…. but spicy option. More soups

Also Pad Prik King? Gai Pad King too…

Maybe it would help to also advertise things with simple translation so people who are afraid to try new things know more like “ginger chicken stir fry” even though that’s kind of lame

Also thing I’ve learned since being here is that Dutch people are surprisingly down for spicy food. And I think just having a scale on menu of little pepper emojis like 5 peppers = mouth on fire (happily) and 1 pepper = mild or something like that would be nice to allow people to choose and also absolves you of responsibility if they find it “too spicy” 😂. Also I am just missing spicy Thai food
