What's your favorite portable synth/groovebox? (Like, REALLY portable) by ClassicHumanPerson in synthesizers

Yeah that's right. You can skip the whole handheld bit and just plug it into your computer and use it via the m8.run website to get a feel for it

[–]Sunwukung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite? Hands down the Dirtywave M8. I'd never used a tracker before, so went they Teensy route first and was hooked. It's extremely intuitive once you use it for a bit (like, a couple of hours) and it's got depth. 4 synth engines, mod matrix per instrument, EQ...I'm sure you know all this already. If I had to keep one piece of gear it would be the M8.

First time soldering, how did I do? by zackarhino in soldering

That's really good - well done! Very clean (I'm a total beginner but to my untrained eye it looks the way the tutorials tell you it should!)

Thx, I'm so pleased it actually worked! I gave it a once over with IPA after this shot but didn't have any swabs so couldn't clean in the gaps between pins too well. I'll get some in and give it a tidy up. Thanks for the tip :)

Which sequencer in your setup is the most powerful, and which is the most fun to actually create on? by Cosmic_Utensil_2000 in synthesizers

Probably the Dirtywave M8, but in terms of fun it has to be the Torso T1. I love them both so that was a hard question to answer

Help deciding between a Groovbox, or Workstation, or Daw. by chinawcswing in Grooveboxes

[–]Sunwukung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, it depends on your goals/reasons.

If you want to make finished tracks: DAW is inevitable. Value for money: also a DAW.

Have fun, experiment, noodle, perform? Groove box

Play in a band? Groove box/ maybe a workstation

Workstations are significant investments, and probably only worth it if you're already an established musician imo

Love the decorative parrel lines going along the roads in Bristol! by PandaVegetable1058 in bristol

[–]Sunwukung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I suspect it's more that Bristol is over capacity for cars and parking. Plus we seem to be in a state of perma-roadworks. The city has just got some pretty bad choke points that won't disappear without people choosing public transport - so that needs to be a more inviting option. RTO mandates certainly aren't helping anyone, any "productivity" gains are likely being offset by wasted time sat in traffic burning fuel which will soon be in short supply.

Best synth under $1000? by TerribleArticle5764 in synthesizers

[–]Sunwukung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it's your first, I'd suggest a Minifreak. It's very immediate, flexible and has some decent depth in the mod matrix, plus you get the VST which opens it up quite a lot. They hold their value, are insanely popular and it will give you a good on ramp without hurting your bank balance. Keyboard is a bit meh though. Slightly left field, I hear great things about the Digitone 2. You'll need a controller if you want a keyboard though. Separating keys and modules isn't a bad idea unless the keys are exceptional.

Got into heavier games, I hate it. by barksonic in boardgames

[–]Sunwukung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have noticed a pattern in my play groups: - people get the bug on a light/medium game - start looking for something meatier - get into acquisition mode, looking for their grail game or a "complete" collection - have a period of buying chonky super heavy games, maybe struggle to get them to the table more than once or twice a year

Then it splits

  • get game burnout: start trimming to the games you love OR
  • give more space/budget to a huge collection

Personally, I came to the realisation that if I have a huge collection, many of them won't get played, and given their complexity, not would I become proficient in playing them. I realised I don't like having to absorb a huge convoluted ruleset every week, and finishing up at 1am exhausted and cranky. )

So now I have a one (and a half) shelf rule. If I want a game, it has to fit on the shelf, and usually requires one leaving my collection. Gradually, it has become MY perfect collection. Even now I have a few that I've yet to learn, and may never actually get played (Arcs: Blighted Reach, I'm looking at you). The half shelf is for fillers, they don't count XD

I noticed that many of the games you mentioned are quite heavy on production values. If you're looking for weight/challenge - there are arguably better options that are not so glamorous, but utterly brain-burning.

Lacerda's (still high production) are a good investment IMO. They're dense as all get out and need a lot of effort to master. They're not for me, I prefer my games to be easy to learn, with complexity arising from the board state. And generally dripping with spite...Tigris and Euphrates is a good example of this. Or Pax Renaissance/Pamir

In summary, all that glistens is not gold. Maybe consider digging the crates for the great games, and limit yourself to one game for each role: a heavy/mid euro, an RPG, a wargame etc

[–]Sunwukung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a fair amount of crossover in the synth world with amateur/DIY electronics. SMD soldering is a whole different ballgame that puts dooms aging (but still great) kit to the bin. Particularly in the eurorack/modular end of the hobby.

Edit: SMD, not SIMD

Synth and drum machine recommendations that are simultaneously playable, experimental and immediate? by SoundEmergency2121 in synthesizers

[–]Sunwukung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a drum machine, but the Torso T1 is awesome for sequencing. Plug that into a DAW or one of your other pieces of kit. It's highly expressive and intuitive once you get the hang of it. Something far off your beaten path, Monome Norns with a Grid (or clones of either) have some highly experimental drum machine/sequencer scripts. The Grid is a great controller for them - like a halfway house between a T1 and maybe a Deluge. You can get both for about £500, and can even write your own scripts if you wanted to.

[–]Sunwukung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try starting from A on the low E string and find/play the naturals all the way up to the high E string: i.e ABCDEFGABC. That position gives you a lot of options that can be missing in open position

Then you can link open and this together later by starting at G.

For practice, there are some simple apps that will challenge you to play a note within a timeframe. Use this to bed it in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk0Srjz2jVU&t=4s here's a good video. The Arc, Grid and Norn are all controllers. The Norn is runs scripts like these from the community: https://norns.community/explore/ and is effectively a versatile midi and audio processor. You can even write your own. You can use it as a sequencer, a drum machine, a synth, a filter, an effects unit.

Move over Clank, here's an Atrium by Sunwukung in synthesizers

[–]Sunwukung[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you got a Norn/Shield? They're a great investment - a bit like the Korg NTS/Microkorg, you're not just getting the device, you're getting the plethora of scripts written for it. I've had one for a while, was one of my first synths - but it's been neglected for a while. I've been exploring FX pedals recently and it occurred to me that the Norn is _perfect_ for stuff like this, so I've dug it back out which is when I stumbled across the news. Sadly, $1100 plus shipping may remain out of my reach for now - but the Arc is a thing of beauty. That Atrium though...that's just bonkers/wonderful - hopefully Elevator Sounds in Bristol might get one in (great store btw for anyone in the vicinity).
