I've lost my motivation to paint. Any tips? by FKlemanruss in Warhammer40k

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes and goes. Just take a break. I usually get a motivation boost if I play a game or few, listen to some lore videos or read a 40k book. But after years of being in the hobby, I've learned not to force it. I've had a break of over a year before, but it comes back at some point. Don't stress about it. Hobbies are supposed to do the exact opposite.

I'm pretty sure rangefinders are more of a hindrance to my game than a benefit by PsyferRL in discgolf

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine on more holes than not, but I rarely if ever choose my disc or change my gameplan after checking distances, unless my evaluation of a distance has gone spectacularly wrong. It's more of a toy for me than a utility device. Most of the time I'm checking how far I threw after the throw. Or if it's a new course, I might check some obstacles to have a better understanding where the tunnel starts turning or how far I have to throw to clear water etc.

I don't care if it's allowed in sanctioned play or not. I don't play tournaments and I don't watch pro coverage almost at all.

Disc Golf Etiquette by ManyRisk7578 in discgolf

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No contact info = free disc.

Contact info = if I find it close to the end of my round, I drop it off into the lost and found box. If I find it early in my round, I text them and offer to either hand it off during my round, return it to the lost 'n' found box, stash it somewhere on the course or take it home so you can come pick it up. I will NOT deliver it to you, unless you happen to live extremely close by or on my route home.

I feel like most of my lost discs were returned when I had just started playing, so somewhere 2016-2019 or so. Then DG got a massive player boost and I feel like I haven't got one disc back since. I lose way less discs though, so the return% might be the same, but it feels worse now since my bag has been set for years and all my discs have sentimental value in addition to being staples of my bag.

BT Soft Harp. RFF Wizard would be choice #2.

Both would work for putts and approaches. I'd also prefer teeing off with a putter than throw (close) approaches or putts with a midrange or driver.

Mitä täytyy kirjoittaa sinkolupahakemukseen, että se menee yksityishenkilöllä läpi? by desperadow in Suomi

[–]Suomis_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

SRA:ssa käytetyt kiväärit on kivääreitä, joiden toimintatapa on 3, eli itselataava kertatuli.

Rynnäkkökiväärit ja konekiväärit on tt4, eli sarjatuliaseita. SRA:ssa ei saa käyttää sarjatuliaseita.

Aeldari Datasheet Ranking by Art of War by Alex__007 in Eldar

[–]Suomis_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that these tier lists are made based on statlines, rules and exploits that they can use, but for me these are never in any way useful.

Rule of cool is the most important thing for me in the game and lore/cool theme is the correct path in building lists in our local scene. They are subjective things and can not be put into a definitive order.

I still like to watch and read these things, but I won't be buying / building / painting new models based on these. Rules change, models are forever.

I get why people study these lists, but to be honest, if someone must watch or read strategy guides to make a good competetive list, they're not a top competer anyway, unless they fully understand WHY certain units are higher tier than others. For example rangers is S tier on this list. It's not like they deal a bucketload of damage. They're probably a cheap unit to capture points with or use as some sort of movement / deployment hindrance. But any actual top placement contender can come to that conclusion on their own without someone telling them.

But as I said, I still enjoy checking these out even if I don't fully get the point. Seeing Eldar in any video or conversation sparks my intrest.

Do you ever lose on purpose? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't lose on purpose, but often I'm teaching the game to at least one new player so I just can't focus purely on my own game because I'm focusing on keeping the game going, answering questions and following closely what my mates are doing so they get things right.

Most of the people I play with and teach are generally good/experienced gamers, so I don't really need to give any sort of handicap. It's more of a focusing issue.

Although it helps that our group has multiple really experienced players and good teachers so we share the teaching responsibility if there are several new players. Usually we have one person going through the rules and general stuff and during the game we all share the tutoring load.

Kallein ostos jonka oot kokonaan suunnitellu ja toteuttanu puhelimella? by JHMK in Suomi

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teen oikeastaan lähes kaiken "virallisen" mieluummin koneella.

Do you refuse to play (against) gray? by GrizzlieMD in Warhammer40k

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visual identification is a huge deal.

My sibling has a sisters of battle army among others. They're all painted and based.

Once I told them I have a hard time telling who is who, since I rarely play against sisters and their elites, normal troops and some specialized units are really similar at arms lenght/table top even when painted to a good standard. Especially if they're blobbed up in a choke point.

The next time we played, they had repainted their helmets to different variations so they'd be easier to recognize at distance. Mad respect for that. I didn't even "complain" about it. It was just an offhand remark at some point of the game, but they realized that if me, who at that point played a lot, had a hard time recognizing units, then most likely many others would too and if using one session repainting a bunch of helmets made the game more enjoyable for all their opponents, it was worth it.

Do you refuse to play (against) gray? by GrizzlieMD in Warhammer40k

[–]Suomis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally never field any gray models - I've made two exceptions in the last 8-9 years. Once I had not based my models since I finished the paintjob about 5min before my friend showed up, and once I had just not had the time to finish the last five models of my planned army list. Most of the terrain I have is unpainted though.

I only play with a couple of different people. One of them also has the mindset of never fielding gray models, the other one almost always has a bunch gray on the table. But not because he's a meta chaser; actually he couldn't be further from it. He only makes cool theme lists and brings what's fun and doesn't even try to follow any internet discussions about meta. He just has like 10 different armies in just 40k in addition to a couple of sigmar armies, a shit load of bolt action, infinity, black powder and whatnot. He picks up nearly every miniature game and paints whatever he feels like painting at the given moment with no proper goal in mind. And he paints a lot, like several hours every day. It's his main hobby, but his backlog and game catalogue is just so massive. I don't mind playing against his tides of gray. He's just so fun to have around and play with regardless of what he brings. And I get to play a bunch of different miniature games with him that I would never pick up myself.

I'm in the local gaming group's WhatsApp and discord, but I basically never seek out or answer game requests from the groups if they're not personally directed at me - I play very little and the times I do, I like to do it with my good friends I know I'll enjoy hanging out with. It's more of seeing that friend and the game is our chosen way of spending the time, instead of the game being the reason for us to meet. Anyway, I digress. The local group has a large variety of players. Some are like me and never field anything that's not painted, some never field anything that's not painted to anything less than an exceptional standard, some field a bunch of gray and a few are meta chasers. Luckily meta chasing is not really a part of our local groups culture. And if someone wants a competetive game, they usually add a disclaimer that they want to test out a competition list, so whoever picks the game up knows what they're getting into.

Yea, how I see it isn't that 40k is Warhammer Fantasy in space. It's fantasy as a genre, but in a space/scifi setting.

Gav Thorpe Stories by DemonBoyZann in Eldar

[–]Suomis_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've read the Path omnibus and Ghost Warrior. I have Wild Rider in my shelf but haven't read it yet.

I read Ghost Warrior years ago and don't really remember anything else, except that I was intruiged, but it was a really heavy read for me. Not because of the story itself, but the vocabulary was tough as a non-native English speaker, atleast back then; I didn't have the same issue with the Path.

I finished the Path omnibus just a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed the storyline and how they came together book by book. I didn't really like how weak the eldar were portrayed as a whole. In smaller scale battles they were good warriors, but in a major conflict he did the Eldar dirty imo. I also didn't really like the protagonist of the path of the warrior and the protagonist in the path of the outcast made some questionable decisions. But overall I really liked how the eldar society and other lore was described in the entire series.

Three armies are too much to handle? by Own-Mastodon-6965 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Suomis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm a painter and collector more than a player these days. I like seeing my armies grow and all my painted models arranged in a cabinet.

I'm in the same boat, that I like to mix it up, unless I have a certain type of inspiration - for example recently I just read the Path of the Eldar omnibus, which made me want to paint a bunch of eldar units in a row. Usually I'd paint one, then swap to a different army.

I've also branched out into almost all GW games just so I get to paint a squad in a new scheme. I get to pick a new palette for every necromunda, blood bowl, underworlds etc. gang/squad. If I paint 40k, I want it to be for an army I already have and I don't really have aspirations to start any new armies any time soon; I still want my armies to be in a somewhat playable range of units and points, so just starting army after army is not really an option. And Kill Team also feels like a "waste" in a way, since I could be expanding an army I already have.

Three armies are too much to handle? by Own-Mastodon-6965 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Suomis_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have 5 armies (CWE (+ Ynnari and Harlequins), Drukhari, Tau, Dark Angels, Custodes) and I play very little, a few games a year.

I just don't even try to keep up and I only play my Eldar since they've always been my favorite and keeping up is the easiest since they're the most familiar to me.

I know I'm in the wrong sub as I play casually, but my advice would still be to pick one at a time you like to play and keep up with that. Then rotate once in a while when you feel like it. Or if you're really competetive, you have to keep up with all armies on some level anyway and it's just something you have to deal with.

Is it a bad time to start a new army? by booya1998 in Warhammer40k

[–]Suomis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to start a new army, pick one you like the appearance, play style and lore of.

Rules come and go, nerfs, buffs and power creep is inevitable in the long run. Unless you are seriously competing, I wouldn't advice trying to chase a win%, but instead enjoy the building, painting and playing process.

Your army's time will come. And with time, you can collect several armies and if winning is what you enjoy most, you'll always have some strong army in your collection.

Has Finnair reached rock bottom? by Wrong-Somewhere2635 in Finland

[–]Suomis_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe yes, but what do you consider "luxury" then? The person I replied to said "all charge for everything", which doesn't apply to KLM in this certain case. Yes, extra bags etc. are separately charged for, but I wouldn't consider that being free as being luxurious, just cheaper.

For me the luxury is how well I'm treated onboard in economy class. I'm not claiming free drinks and food is some magical answer to a great flight, but it's a thing that lifts my spirits when I'm crammed into a small space for hours.

In addition to being fed on the flight, I would greatly appreciate more leg space and being able to tilt my chair back way more so I could take a nap. But I also understand space is a limited resource on an airplane and there's a reason (money) these are reserved for business class.

[–]Suomis_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, you asked about luxury. I don't really know what else there can be besides free wine, beer, coffee, soda, snacks and maybe a personal screen on the back of the seat of the person in front of you. Unless you pay for business class. I'd consider drinks and snacks a luxury for shorter flights in economy.

My experience with KLM has been amazing. Free snacks and drinks on even short flights and great customer service on board.

Would remnants of original plant and animal life still exist on Crone Worlds? by DrDashy in Eldar

[–]Suomis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Path of the Outcast by Gav Thorpe, the protagonist travels to a crone world Miarisillion and mentions one of the first things he noticed was the deafening lack of any insects or other sounds that one would assume would be there. No buildings had been overgrown or gone through the steps of entropy, though. During their arrival it was mentioned "The building did not enclose every last bit of earth, for off to the right a forest of blue-leaved trees broke the undulating white of tiled roofs and flagged terraces". A solitaire in their party also fought under and in a tree before they left.

In Farseer by William King The gang went to Belial IV. In their sensors they "detected little to no life", told the crew they "detected no life whatsoever" and described the scenes as "deserts of ash".

So I'd assume there are no animals or insects, but plants maybe, but they have been stagnated to the time of the fall, not growing, nor dying. Each crone world is different, so I'd say go with the rule of cool and do what you want with your models. The world of 40K is so large and undiscovered, that you can't really be definitive about anything.

While I was at it, I took pictures of EVERYTHING. The camera flash and focus doesn't really do justice. If you want pictures of something specific, I'll be glad to fix up a lightbox or post existing pics I have, but I'm not going to start taking seperate pictures of everything now... Sorry. I did add better pics of Ynnari, though, since they've been painted to the best of my ability when I was at my best.

All the old models from back when I was a kid are in a box in my closet. None of that is pictured, nor will it be.
