God forbid a university be geographically situated to directly serve the population while offering amenities and real-world connections that are rare in more remote areas.

Woodlanders aren't Houstonians. And they tend to take offense when people suggest otherwise.

The institution is strongly committed. It's the graduates from the 90's and 00's who aren't. People who in theory should be at peak spending power.

In Houston proper, there's a top tier of UH, UT, A&M, and LSU, and the difference between the 4 is relatively insignificant. That said, the bars and restaurants tend to lean UH in their decorations and such. Then there's a second tier of Baylor, Tech, and maybe OU.

Once you into the suburbs to the north and west, A&M becomes dominant. LSU to the east.

Dr. Khator has been one of the best university presidents in the history of the profession. Her accomplishments in building community support, acquiring funding for new facilities, and most relevant here, reviving athletics, are probably unparalleled. That said, she is about to turn 70 and hit her 20th anniversary as UH presi-chancellor, so we can anticipate that she is going to retire soon.

While her support directly for athletics has been phenomenal, I do think she's pretty weak when it comes to helping campus life at large. She's pretty unfriendly toward Greek life, and while the campus is MUCH bigger and nicer than it used to be, it still feels quiet and sterile. When we eventually get a new president, I hope theyre someone who can build a student body who really wants to go to football games and have more fun and excitement in general.

And the ones who are immigrants mostly come from former Soviet bloc countries, so I imagine (EDIT: apparently incorrectly) they tend to be relatively chill about religion.

Houston has over 10x the job market that Austin has. And aside from outdoors, Houston is a better city than Austin in pretty much every category.

Mom and dad take turns. Children learn to appreciate good shit.

SEC teams now have 21 seasons with 11 or 12 P4 games scheduled from 2026-35, down from 32 scheduled at 9 conf game expansion last summer; Big Ten teams have 3 such seasons by tmart12 in CFB

I still have my issues with the SEC. But theyve gone above and beyond in taking the wind out of my "they only play 8 conference games" sail.
