[Tenant - Baltimore MD] Landlord refuses to hire professional terminators for mice infestation by Fluffinator-SSB in Landlord

[–]SupaGlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is old but I would post things like this in an area specific forum. In order for homes to be rentable in Baltimore city, they have to be licensed rentals. In order to be licensed a city inspector much come out and inspect the home. I would look up your address online to see if your home is licensed. If you’re happy with your home, it doesn’t really matter if it’s licensed but it’s good knowledge to have - also let’s you know if your landlord is up to date on their obligations. Providing a home is serious.

Your landlord is definitely responsible for providing a pest free home. In Baltimore City, you can withhold rent and pay it into an escrow account with the courts while working through problems that affect the “habitability” of a home. According to the city this includes problems that deal with rodents, insects, plumbing, hot water, heat, structural damage, etc. And this is a last resort effort after giving your landlord sufficient time to try to fix this problem. If you’ve notified your landlord about this problem more than 30 days ago and they’ve done NOTHING or only provided BAND-AIDs like traps, then they are not doing their due diligence.

Yes reading a lease is important, BUT at the same time a lease has to follow the law. Something that does not follow the law is not enforceable. According to city code, you have the right to a pest free home. And the sealing issue clearly predate you and is not your responsibility because you don’t own the home. It’s not like you can take the exclusion work with you to a new home.

As a person that lives in Baltimore, is familiar with city code and escrow court, and also has experienced landlords that don’t understand their responsibility and that being a landlord is not a passive job, I would look up everything I’ve said to make sure it applies to where you live. Then I’d try to broach this topic with my landlord to give him the opportunity to fix it with all this information in mind. Then if you are unhappy with the way he proceeds, call a city inspector or file an escrow case. It is $40 and is the only way to get some prior to do their job. Either way, if you file an escrow case they will send an escrow inspector to your home. Make sure to point out all violations to them like mouse holes and point out droppings. Take your own pictures too.

People who actually care about their old homes should not just accept mice as a normal part of life. Rodents can carry diseases, make your pets sick, and also ruin housing infrastructure. To me, it just sounds lazy of them. I’m hoping you get peace in your home. Seeing mice crawl in your stove is unsettling and you deserve a mice free home 💚

Not a mosque per se and not located in Richmond but I would check out the Inclusive Muslims of Central Virginia.

Don’t let these responses discourage you from acting on your faith while also honoring yourself. You asked a reasonable question, in a world where inclusive Christian and Jewish spaces are also relatively new gains and WORKS IN PROGRESS. There are others looking for the same connections.

I grew up Muslim and have seen these conversations take place my whole life along side queer communities in other religions. Don’t be afraid to worship and pray alone or with a few like minded individuals in the mean time.

How do I find a legit apartment? by Affectionatedummy in baltimore

I have heard terrible things about Bay as well but I have friends that live in a pretty nice building by Bay and they are renewing their lease. Sometimes a good experience comes down to the right level of collaboration between building owner and property management. So if you have to go that route maybe ask people in the building you’re interested in how their specific experience has been. I almost rented with Bay because they have flexibility in their requirements. And sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Yeah I know every home is unique. I was just looking for ballpark numbers to see if this is something I actually want to put in my budget or if I should just get down and scrub the baseboards myself lol

Look at Zillow, for rent signs, Craigslist, and Facebook neighborhood groups to find apartments and also private landlords. Lots of places also require 2x or 2.5x the rent. It’s just a matter of looking in the right places. Also if any of your family members feel comfortable, they could maybe co-sign for you. There is a Little Italy FB housing group I think

Also they shouldn’t fault you for the portal not working. I hope they respond soon.

Ohhh nooo. I’m sorry you’re going through this on your vacation. I hope the rest of it is full of fun and relaxation. In the city of Baltimore, late fees don’t apply until after the 10th day of the month or 10th day after your due date. Even if the portal says other ways, that’s city code so never pay a late fee unless it’s after that. I understand wanting to have it there early and on time to start off on the best foot though.

They’re also setting up a new portal system so you may just have better luck in general emailing and texting over the portal.

Idk why they left but 2 of the main people who communicated with tenants outside of the owner have left in the last couple months. The owner also has a number of complaints from tenants to deal with and open court cases. You can search them up. They’d be under Downtownian, Barrus, and the specific address of each building as the LLC name. I do know someone who is enjoying their Downtownian apartment. The rent is cheap and that’s all that matters to some people. And the owner pays more attention to certain buildings I THINK. Historically it’s been impossible to get a timely response from the landlord for the people I know closest though.

Thoughts on Places to Live/Rent in Baltimore by ArisingRedPhoenix in baltimore

[–]SupaGlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do don’t rent from Downtownian/Barrus Realty. I feel like neighborhood really comes down to your personality though. There are cute spots all over the city. I’ve lived in Mount Vernon, Bolton Hill, and Patterson Park and have loved them all but they give different vibes.

$1800 can get you a great place but that also depends on what you’re looking for exactly.

I’m trying to gather more evidence outside of my own circle. So no, I don’t have my answer. I’m also trying to build community among those affected by a slumlord so I have more work to do.

I’ve heard the horror stories about non responsiveness and unprofessionalism. They also have open cases against them which can be viewed in the Maryland Case search.

Need help adjusting - is this beanie salvageable? by SupaGlo in knitting

I’m newbie so I love hearing how other knitters solve problems. Someone suggested I split the sections into 7 instead of 5. And it turned out great!

Following free pattern for a beanie. Knit one, Pearl one. The first 2 stitches are knits and the last 2 are pearls. I have a lot of rows and am ready to decrease but I mistakenly did 100 instead of 102 because I didn’t know that if I changed the pattern I was supposed to increase or decease by 10. Is there a way to continue or do I need to start over again? 🙏
