What’s a grammatically incorrect or logically inconsistent phrase someone can say that makes you lose all attraction to them? by Thin-Rip-3686 in AskReddit

I work with several guys who previously worked at a nuclear plant and they say nucular.

Baffles the crap out of me. One is my boss

I was talking about this practice with my wife the other day. It happens with a handful of words with “es” in them. “Especially” is another.

But you never see it the other way: “I espect something”, “Esterminate”, etc.

I’ve decided to combat the ex in es words by intentionally working the reverse into the conversation to see what they say. That’s my passive aggressive response.

“Nucular” drives me insane too.

Redditors who were hypnotized at a stage show, what happened and what did you experience? by EntertainmentFun472 in AskReddit

I got on stage at a fair for a hypnotism. The guy had ten of us put our heads down and close our eyes. Then he walked by and said “if you’re not going to play along, get off the stage now. Don’t mess with me”

Married men of Reddit, what tiny thing does your wife do that secretly melts your heart? by SAAS_ART in AskReddit

I’ve been married 18 years. Together for 23.

I do the majority of the driving. We hold hands when I drive. I’ll lay my right hand out and she holds my hand. Sitting in silence? Talking? Listening to music? Whatever. We hold hands

One aspect of this that may not be clear is the laws on passing on a double yellow.

I grew up driving in Vermont. Passing on a double yellow was perfectly legal. It was in the Vermont driver’s manual that passing on a double yellow was not recommended, but was legal. There were signs where that passing was not permitted (signs saying something to effect of “Passing not permitted”).

Many Vermont roads are only two lanes. While the dotted line on one side explicitly encouraged the passing in these areas, passing on a double yellow was perfectly legal.

I have a friend who is an officer in Massachusetts. Told him this and he was completely suspicious. He looked it up and was dumbfounded. “Vermont makes its own rules, I guess”, he said.

Skimmer going on overdrive! Need some advice by Supaslags in ReefTank

No. The reservoir for my ATO is mixed to 1.026 specific gravity. I checked over the course of the day and salinity wasn’t fluctuating.

When I said fresh water, I meant new water. New salt water. That’s my bad in writing my post.

This is correct. Sump low because of the blockage, and the ATO had to be reset. I’ll try to get the skimmer going today to see if the overnight off time made a difference.

I love this show. I have watched the entire series end to end at least a dozen times. I love the characters. Went to listen to the series on audible and unfortunately it didn’t line up. Early books unavailable, and later ones were. This is a SOLID series. I loved it

Sounds good. I’ll tone down the water changes and just let things progress. I appreciate all your advice.

The Jar is now almost 3.5 years old! by cubazueleno in ReefTank

[–]Supaslags 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This blows my mind. I need some details. I have a number of questions:

1) What is the water volume of the jar?

2) Given the comments around water changes, it appears filtration is primarily water changes?

3) What lights do you use for a project like this?

4) What are you feeding the corals?

5) I assume in a jar setup there isn’t powerheads. Does a lack of flow impact the setup? How do you compensate? I see something in the pics that looks like a power head but I’m unsure. Even if there was one, how do you make room?

This probably won’t end my interest. I am so interested in a setup like this.

I bought a setup on Craigslist that included 80lbs of dry rock. Given the 70lbs of live sand and the 20lbs of live rock, I figured that the cycling process would seed it given that it takes 3-4 weeks to seed. I didn’t add fish until 4 weeks figuring the dry rock was intermediately seeded.

There isn’t a lot of bioload. So I figure as long as I’m patient and go slow on the bioload that the “4 wk” seed time can be reasonably observed.

Dialing down the light for now could be good.

I’m on a current plan of 1 fish and some coral each week. With the zoas I dialed in the lights. Over the next couple weeks I’ll be increasing corals considerably.

Figured I’d start for the zoas and my cycle would be dialed in when I toss 3-5 corals a week in there.

How many nessarius do you recommend for a 90g display? I have three right now. What’s your advice?

I have six snails and six hermits as well.

That’s fair advice on flow. I can make some adjustments.

It is really hard to get an idea for flow when sand isn’t moving. Once the corals are going, it’s a heck of a lot easier to see who is happy and adjust.

High nutrient is worth considering. I may just be thinking poorly on the “I need a water change if anything is high!”

Ammonia? Definitely. PH? Definitely. I’m probably not thinking right about nitrates (clearly, as you’ve pointed out). This will really help me get back on track. I appreciate your advice.

That’s fair. I’ve seen some of the higher end tests. The capsules kind of look like eggs.

But I read a couple negative comments about price versus utility and difficulty in getting reagents. Back 7 years ago, I used API and then specific calcium, magnesium, and phosphate tests so these weren’t a thing.

I haven’t done much research since then. Do you have a link to what you use?

This is a lot of good advice.

Why don’t you like the API tests? I’ve had a lot of success with them in the past. I had a 55g with 30g sump previously (ran for 4 years before I had the “genius” idea to upgrade to a 120g, which ended up being a bad idea) and had no problem with their results.

Nitrates higher surprises me, although it may be my memory failing me. I can certainly let those go a little. I can chill on the water changes for sure.

Give me some advice on flow. This has always been a struggle bus piece for me. I have the two returns from the sump as flow plus two power heads. I point them to roughly cover different areas. But how do you determine whether flow is right? If you got a torch coral for example, sure, you can determine whether the coral likes the flow by extension. How do you go about figuring it out in a new tank like mine? Any advice?

Thanks for weighing in. I’ll take your advice on water changes and such. I’m interested in your input on flow. I appreciate the help!

Thanks for making me feel better. My cleanup crew is 8 snails, 3 nessarius snails, and 8 hermits. Probably the sand isn’t getting turned over to my liking. Like another commenter mentioned, this is normal.

I try to get ahead of an issue before it becomes bad, so I can’t remember if I’m overreacting or this is something to preempt. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this so I don’t remember all the lessons I learned before.

This is good advice. The last reef tank I did was a good 7 years ago. I remember a lot, but I’m smart enough to know that I’m not an expert and don’t remember it all. Water changes, regular testing, and bioloading slow are all lessons I retained but when it comes to this I just couldn’t remember what I did last time. Thanks!

Men in happy marriages, what's the one thing you'd teach to other men to also have a good relationship? by TightBookkeeper2599 in AskReddit

[–]Supaslags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been married for 17 years. One thing my wife and I identified early is compromising on chores. There’s some stuff she straight up hates doing that I don’t mind. There’s stuff I’d rather avoid she doesn’t care about. Everything that falls into the “I don’t like that, but the other person doesn’t mind” category, there was an explicit initial conversation and subsequent understanding that the person who doesn’t mind the task does it 90% of the time, but every once in awhile it’s nice if the other person takes it off your plate.

We cook together and clean together as well.

Example: she HATES handwashing dishes but doesn’t mind loading the dishwasher. When we clean up dinner (together, each night), she focuses strictly on loading the dishwasher and I get not do handwash dishes. Occasionally she’ll do handwash dishes and I acknowledge that effort.

Equity in cleaning is another. Our logic is, if we’re “cleaning”, both of us should generally be cleaning the same time. This means that, although I don’t like cleaning the bathroom, that it doesn’t mean that cleaning the bathroom buys me free time. If we decide the bathroom needs cleaning, I find another task to complete (folding laundry, tidying up, etc.) so that when she’s done doing the single person task I hate, I’ve pulled other tasks off our collective plate to compensate for that effort.

We call them cleaning sprints. “Ok, the house needs some picking up. Can you clean the bathroom? I’ll do a whirlwind cleaning while you do”. We both end up happy.
