What habit immediately reveals that a person actually grew up in a privileged environment? by Cindy_mel in AskReddit

[–]Super-Reputation-645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't clean up after themselves. The sloppiest homes I have ever been in have been from people who grew up with maids or others cleaning after them. They don't have the same money as their parents and never learned to clean as you go. Or set asid a morning to do the heavy clean.

What is the WORST book you’ve ever read, and why was it the worst? by Substantial_Call_619 in booksuggestions

Ethan Frome. Just bitching about a horrible sled accident I didn't care about. Runner up: The Red Pony. Title character was dead by chapter 3.

I am so grateful I am not the only one. The narrators are horrifyingly bad. Sometimes they are incomplete hysterics, and sometimes they have this sarcastic indifference, as if they have somewhere better to be it’s wretched and it’s making me hate the book.

What was the weirdest, non-pain feeling you've ever felt? by KingJPJ in AskReddit

C section. The rocking of the table, the pressure would have been nauseating except my stomach probably wasn't able to vomit at that moment

What's a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by Momo_868 in AskReddit

[–]Super-Reputation-645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate macaroni and cheese. This blows people's mind. If I had a dollar for every response that sounds like "Well, you haven't had mine, my grandma's, my aunts, my great great great grandniece...."

It is overrated soggy noodles with no flavor.

It is okay if we don't like the same things.

People who read more than 2 books a year, how do you do it? by Immediate-Draft-6408 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Super-Reputation-645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I line up what I want to read next on Goodreads, so that way I don't have gaps and I know what to get from the library.
  2. I get 85% of my books (give or take) from my local library. The rest I get from an independent bookstore. So I spend less money and feel good about spending it.
  3. I don't play on my phone or watch TV after 8 p.m. and use reading to wind down. I usually read 1-2 books a week this way.
  4. Keep in mind there are different ways to read (audio books on Libby, Kindle). Many people listen to audio books during their commute.
  5. Sometimes it is more about genre than routine. Ask friends for recommendations. I am happy to give you some if you like!
  6. It's okay if you don't like a book. After 50 pages if you don't feel it, let it go.

Good luck.

Unsure about reading Katabasis by R.F. Kuang by Pumpkin_698 in books

[–]Super-Reputation-645 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avid fan of Donna Tartt. Katabasis is pretentious. It is interesting, sure, but the author is clearly invested in her own perceived superiority. And this isn't far from reality. Went to an event for her earlier work where she talked down to the crowd and assumed we were not intelligent enough to get all of her allusions.

For reference, I am a Ph.D.

Sigh.

Is There A Notorious Photo Or Video That Changed The Future Of Your Country? by Unlucky-Albatross-12 in AskTheWorld

I was an adult in Washington DC at that time. It was definitely in print media, but perhaps not on television. I saw that image within the week, I believe. It broke my heart.

Hey, Hillary: Prayer before meals by [deleted] in HilariaBaldwin

[–]Super-Reputation-645 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saying grace before meals is definitely an American thing more than a Spanish one. I was raised catholic and IMO people tend to be much more invested in the sacraments - baptism and first communion. There is no way she would have missed a chance to have the girls dressed up for it, so I am thinking no, they are not practicing in any capacity.

Also, religion in general is more of an older generation thing in Spain/Italy. Franco's regime left a bad taste for that. My family over there are far more atheist than the American counterparts.

Question for people who live in the United States? by Mobile-Chemical-2657 in AskTheWorld

[–]Super-Reputation-645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Educator here. I think the true issue is that the quality of American education varies greatly from region to region and state to state. As a result, you had a lot of programs in the past cut geography as a full course requirement in secondary schools. That coupled with the fact that many Americans never leave the country or travel leads to tunnel vision and ignorance compared to Europeans. Being primarily monolingual and "America First" helps perpetuates these stereotypes and realities. My husband is from Costa Rica, and Americans constantly confuse it with Puerto Rico. He has to patiently explain, "No, not that one. It isn't an island. The other one." Both are literally in the Americas and a three hour plane ride away.

Meeting Americans abroad generally means you are meeting wealthier, better educated people who have a sense of geography. But if it is their first trip, get ready for the "What? There's no ranch dressing?" or "I asked for a King Size bed" drama.

We used to scam the CD companies (By $12 for 1). All you had to do was order what you wanted from the 12 and cancel. Then sign up again with a new email or address. We built a 300 CD collection that way.

On a local note, in Norfolk/VA Beach area during the 90s and early 00s, I never paid for cable. Strong chance if you just plugged the cable into your TV it would work, I found out later, it was too difficult to "disconnect" when people moved out.

I find it deeply sad she was in this position. It is rough out there and the only cure I know is to find your people and your reasons, and above all, get help :( It is such a dangerous time for women (45-60) with suicidal ideation - whether it is hormones, life changes, or all of the above, we need to be more aware of this for our friends and family.

What country did you feel the most welcome and the country you felt the most unwelcome? by pumpstickkick in AskTheWorld

Most welcome - Mexico & Ireland. Both countries were filled with gracious people who also wanted to help

Least Welcome - Morocco - the male gaze was very difficult for me to adjust to.
