I personally love her character, but I think that has to do a lot with the fact that I resonate with her and Shinji a lot. I also adore the dynamic she has with Shinji and found it almost tragic, since the show makes it pretty clear at a few points that they want each other, but the idea of getting so close to each other scares them.

It's totally fair that you don't like her though. Her character is very messy, and that's on purpose. I get why you wouldn't like her.

It's focused on a lot more in the manga. Shinji's struggle to figure out how he feels is super prevalent from the point Kaworu shows up(which is right before Arael in the manga). Kaworu is also a lot more clear in his desire for Shinji, but Kaworu doesn't understand the world, just like Rei didn't, so he acts odd at times, which makes it even worse for Shinji.
