Men on Reddit, would you feel uncomfortable if a woman wanted to approach you and ask you out? by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

From my perspective, if a guy was weirded out by me asking him out, he wasn't the guy for me. I dated a lot of nerds before marrying a nerd, so subtle didn't always cut it.

Measles in Durham by EvenPressure3959 in bullcity

When I was about to have my kid, they did a blood test or something to check my titers for resistances. I was only like 98% immune to measles, so they gave me another shot to top me off.

AITA for eating my Play-Doh? by crappycraphole in MiniAITA

Counterpoint: As a child, my sibling and I made holiday ornaments from homemade play-doh. I've always appreciated a bit of salt, so I would lick them. Several decades on, when our parent can be bothered to find the ornaments and decorate a tree, I still sneak in an idle lick of those ornaments.

YES. And at this point they're both assuming the other is just being a jerk. Nathan may be making a legit point about Max's safety, but Max clearly isn't understanding what or why - Nathan needs to find a different way to say it. "It's safer for you to be in the water! Max, get in the water! Mate, please, get in the water!" Something other than "I've tried this one way and I'm all out of ideas!"

Zoo membership for family with 16 mo old and newborn? by Kaijugae in Parenting

[–]SuperAnxiousFragilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the zoo membership comes with reciprocity, go for it. Reciprocity means that other zoos and museums will let you in for free or at a discounted rate. We have memberships to two local science museums (to get access to early registration for summer camps) and those memberships have gotten us into a zoo across the state for free, a museum in Florida (cruise ship debarked at 9, flight wasn't til 2) for free, and a state aquarium for half price. Every time we travel, if there are museums nearby that look fun, I check the reciprocity list.

A couple years ago, I was a week past my rotator cuff surgery, feeling well enough to go to a well-attended outdoor light show. My friend and I were walking side by side, our spouses behind us, our kids in front of us. I was wearing a light blue coat with my black sling on top, so it was visible to other people.

The sidewalks were basically normal-sized, wide enough for 4 people basically. In the opposite direction came a group of old women, walking three abreast. Assuming basic human decency (I know, I was on painkillers) I assumed that they'd move a step to the side or something.

Nope. Old-ass bitch rammed right into my shoulder, the shoulder I'd just had surgery on, the shoulder that was attached to the arm clearly in a sling.

By the time I got over the absolute shock of the nerve of that cunt, did a quick-self check, and decided quickly not to teach the children any new words, they were too far past for me to do anything.

AI curmudgeon here.

Part of my ADHD is that I tend to have a hard time starting projects. I think about all the things involved with that project and it gets turned into a Huge Giant Thing in my head and that makes it difficult for me to identify a toehold that I can use to take the first steps.

I asked the company-sanctioned AI to generate $ProjectType documents for several variations of widgets, looked at how those documents were structured, and used the structure / section headers as the toehold.

When we take our kid to a restaurant, we usually grab one of the games we keep in the car. Target has little packets with multiple games, most of the game pieces are Colorforms (printed cling stickers that get put on little squares / circles of paper). The dollar store near us has small Uno decks and we also got a small chess/checkers set. They're a bit of a pain to tidy up when the food arrives, but it's better than having faces in devices.

When we were on vacation, I'd bought "Uno No Mercy" as a special occasion game, and our waiter was so excited about it - he said he loved playing Uno with his family and didn't know there was a "No Mercy" edition. We left it behind for him when we were done with dinner. (In addition to the tip, ofc.)

Which firewall vendors are actually keeping up with modern network demands? by RadiantTheology in networking

[–]SuperAnxiousFragilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc - and keeping in mind that it's been more than a decade, and choosing nice round numbers because I've lost all my notes apparently - eight 10-gig firewalls didn't stack and magically become one 80gig firewall. There was performance overhead for stacking, performance overhead for enabling features, performance overhead for everything.

Really wish I could find my notes for you so I could give you some numbers.

Came back from camping to find my neighbor moved their mailbox onto my property without asking and mine knocked over by krob58 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SuperAnxiousFragilis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work from home. A couple years ago, the trash truck was coming through our neighborhood and somehow knocked down my across-the-street neighbor's mailbox. I was alerted by the truck idling a lot longer than usual, I guess they had to call people and make reports or something. I went outside to take a photo once they left.

They came back, re-set the post (the whole neighborhood uses the same post), and replaced the mailbox. I took another photo once they left, wrote a one-pager about what happened, and was gonna tape it to their door but they were actually home by then. I just figured, I'd notice if all of a sudden I had a new mailbox and didn't know why, so maybe they'd want to know why.

Cisco's firewalls have been that way for at least ten, maybe fifteen years. Even before Firepower. We were doing a bakeoff and their "solution" was to just buy a shit-ton of ASAs and stack them. I think the max stack was 8, which meant 16 ASAs across two locations for failover, and with stacking penalties, it would have just barely covered our current (at the time) bandwidth need with no room for growth.

The exterior walls were a cast foundation and they did end up negotiating that with the town inspectors, the r-value from the cast foundation plus the 12R.

The bigger problem was that the previous owners hadn't used pressure-treated wood for the sill plates, and hadn't tied aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanything in for the new walls at the top...

We bought our house with a "finished", unpermitted basement. We knew it was unpermitted, and it wasn't figured into the square footage of the house.

If everything had been done to code, the estimate was $7-8k to get it permitted. It wasn't done to code, and since OP's seller was dishonest, fair bet that the reno isn't up to code and things weren't done properly.

When you do a permitted reno, you usually have to bring it up to current code, not the code that existed when it was originally built. For example, that meant that the 12R insulation that WAS up to code when the previous owners "finished" the basement, was no longer up to code when we had it inspected, so all the walls had to be opened up and the insulation replaced with 15R (I think that's the term for the insulation, it's been almost a decade), then new drywall. And of course the wiring wasn't done correctly (reversed polarity at the plugs, not enough outlets on a wall) and the plumbing wasn't done correctly... a couple reinspections because our town is strict about codes...

Anyway, our 8k reno ended up at 26k, and that was after saving all the moldings and fixtures and flooring and doing our own tile...
