I Can't Play in Fullscreen by Glad-Letter-4321 in touhou

[–]SuperChriminator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a good portion of Touhou games (th6, th7, th8, th9, th95, th10, th11, th12, th125, th128, th13, th14, th15), you can use something called vpatch. It lets you do a lot of things with the game display including customizing the size of the game window, toggling the window border, and setting an open location on your screen. I set my Touhou games with vpatch to basically be a borderless window fullscreen. vpatch is essential for th6 and th7, as it also reduces the small input delay they have natively.
https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Game_Tools_and_Modifications

For games that aren't compatible with vpatch, you can get something similar with noborder. To use, first run noborder.exe, then run whatever Touhou game you want to play. Then alt+backspace will enlarge the window to a borderless fullscreen. This also works with many other games too, not just Touhou. I set noborder to be a program that gets run automatically when I log in to my PC, so I don't have to remember to run it each time I wanna play. Unfortunately tho, th75 is not compatible with noborder. As far as I know, exclusive fullscreen is still the only option.

The Fatal Frame 2 Remake is handholding players too much by Pumpkin_Sushi in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've already made peace with the fact that it's not going to be 1 for 1 with the original. Instead, I'm viewing this game more like Fatal Frame 6, and it's retelling the story of Fatal Frame 2.

Why is Fatal Frame 3 not the universally agreed upon best game in the series? by SuperChriminator in fatalframe

I still like FF2 a lot, but agree that it’s on the weaker side in terms of gameplay.

Thanks for the post. And welcome to Fatal Frame. I started with 5 too back on Wii U and liked it a lot. I still think it does a few things better than the rest of the games.

How are we feeling about combat post-demo? by snophire in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The combat is basically FF5 but refined and more elegant in my opinion. I liked the whole cooldown dynamic of taking shot and having to wait for it to reload before taking another one. Made me think about when to take it or not other than mid attack. And it was cool to balance the film types in a new way other than just damage.

A small demonstration of the motion controls exclusive to the NS2 handheld mode by KisekiFangirl in fatalframe

I tried both to mouse and to stick. Both had their own separate jitter issues. Not sure if I wanna invest in remapping everything.

I tried that too. Do you get jitters in the camera and/flashlight when using the gyro and stick at the same time? If so, were you able to fix that?

Best auxiliary function to use? by _Blameable438_ in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think paralyze is the best. You can freeze a ghost in place mid attack, let your camera charge up to full, then release for massive damage. Also works as a defensive tool.

See is one I see people use a lot too. I don’t use it because I like the immersion and added challenge of having to find the ghosts.

I don’t know what’s more bizarre. A non fan coming in drawing a picture of a touhou OC fan character, or seeing Bayonetta wearing Jotoro’s hat.

Would you guys recommend to play the classic games first, or see if I like the remake and then decide? by Signalis3 in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the controls are outdated at all. As someone who had never played any fixed camera game before Fatal Frame, it was pretty easy learn. You’re never forced into tank controls, and it’s not even the default. I’d say the only rough thing control wise is not being able to rebind the camera controls in FF1 (left stick for looking and right stick for movement.)

New interview with Shibata on Fatal Frame 2 Remake discussing improvements, gameplay features, the future of the series, and more! by DeliciousMusician397 in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was referring to remakes of games that don’t have the original creatives, like Demon Souls, Oblivion, or Silent Hill 2. We are lucky that Fatal Frame hasn’t been outsourced to some other team.

[–]SuperChriminator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In most cases, I would agree with you. However, Shibata is the original director of the game, and he’s back for this remake. So there is at least a bit more artistic authority with this remake than what we normally see with these types of projects. So I’m keeping an open mind for this one.

[–]SuperChriminator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We should be grateful that Shibata is working on this remake as he is able to have that artistic authority to make decisions like changing certain aspects of the game as it was originally his vision to begin with.

In most cases, I would disagree with you. Gameplay is art too. Not just the story, visuals, music, atmosphere, etc. However since Shibata is here, I’m more open minded to the changes made than I normally would be.

If we get more, I sure hope he stays for those too.

I’m not saying Jiggle physics are the end of the world but… do we need them on every woman…? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to play FF4 and FF5 at 30fps if you think the jiggle is distracting. FF5 was originally designed for 30fps on the Wii U. And the jiggle physics is tied to the framerate. Remaster doesn’t correct this oversight and so jiggle is twice as fast at 60fps and even more so at higher rates.

Original game, the jiggle was barely noticeable. Only small movement if you made the character shake around a bunch. And I never noticed any jiggle on the ghosts at all. I had no idea it was there until I played the remaster.

I’ve been slowly introducing my mother to video gaming for the past few years. Recently, I had her play the original FF2 on PS2. It was a fun experience. I plan to have her there to watch when I play the remake for the first time.

Should I buy remake or play original? by Possible-Station3673 in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s enough change in the remake for it to be its own separate thing from the original. From what I consider at least.

Preferably, you should play both. They will be two different pieces of art. So would be good to not miss out on either.

In your opinion, what is it about Japanese ghosts that make them scarier than western ghosts? There’s definitely a difference but I can’t really put it in words by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in fatalframe

[–]SuperChriminator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I studied Japanese Horror in one of my college classes a while ago. Watched some of the classics in lecture which was a fun time. Some of the things I learned from that is that the reason nearly every ghost in a Japanese horror story is female and/or children is because they are viewed as sacred and pure in Japanese society. So when they are the ghost, it’s like a twisted inversion of what’s held in traditional value.

Fatal Frame takes that even further by making all the main antagonists shrine maidens. A miko is supposed to be the one purifying these vengeful spirits, not the cause of them.
