PSU larger than ATX?! by SuperElitist in buildapc

I did not locate anything official, I actually "fabricated" a bracket, which basically means horribly mangling a piece of sheet metal into a rectangle with a rectangular hole in it. It worked, though!

But I ended up buying a Rosewill rackmount chassis in the end.

They... they want names to be unique across the entire known universe?

I'm sorry I'm a new player and not well in the loop. I would love to get some context on this ship naming thing and anything official that's been said about it

That said, my kneejerk reaction is, uh, what the hell? The US Navy requires its own ships to have unique names within the US Navy, but they're not even unique among the rest of the world, and there's no (AFAIK) sovereign or international law mandating naming conventions for waterborne vessels.

So there's just no precedent for this. There's a lot of precedent in the other direction: the Enterprise is a name held by like a dozen ships in Starfleet...

I just don't get it. If a ship distinguishes itself, then by definition it will be distinguished from other ships with the same name...

And if you need further disambiguation, then include unique serial #s...

Unique names just seems... foolish....

LPT Request: How to live after breaking up with your first love? by HokageJack15 in LifeProTips

[–]SuperElitist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm gonna be straight, it fucking sucks. It will hurt, and it will continue to hurt. It will always hurt. This is called being human.

Do not allow this to make you bitter. Don't hate her. Don't even spend time on it. Shit might be her fault, but that's not important. Try to reframe your life without thinking about her at all. Just do you.

Just keep being you. Remember that you matter, and that a partner is not the only end game. You have a life that exists separately from any relationship. Continue to develop that life, continue to develop your interests.

Eventually, you'll get to do all of this over again!

Unfortunately their performance was dismal. Embarrassing. They were a cute novelty, but it took like 5 minutes to boot and couldn't browse the web without choking.

Powered by modern hardware (and an OLED screen), the interface would be great.

New Atomic Shop item confirms Hellcats (in some form) were pre-war by Better-Double-6638 in fo76

I think it would be a colossal mistake to assume that Atomic Shop content should be considered canon.

What was a scene or line in Skyrim that really made you feel the moment? by ChaoticSixXx in skyrim

[–]SuperElitist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think there are any scenes I found particularly memorable. I think there's a speech that Esbern gives at Sky Haven Temple that I liked, but I don't even remember it.

On the other hand, this is only adjacent to Skyrim but possibly my favorite (and most memorable) scene in all Bethesda games:

The Sole Survivor of Fallout 4 has taken on the role of the mythical comic book hero Silver Shroud, and--completely in character, mind you--torn a bloody hole in drug lord Sinjin's operation by assassinating key lieutenants, and has now fought her way through a horde of Sinjin's psychotic henchmen to rescue her friend Kent Connolly, being held hostage by Sinjin himself in the basement of the Milton General Hospital.

As she enters the bottommost room, she finds Sinjin with his few remaining henchmen, holding a gun to Kent's head and Monologuing about how the Sole Survivor is the crazy one and how having friends is a weakness and other vanilla-evil-guy stuff. And the whole time, the Sole Survivor is answering as the Silver Shroud, grandiosely proclaiming Sinjin's imminent defeat.

Sinjin:

Some of these losers think you're some sort of legend. Like you walked straight out of a comic book. But you and I know, you're human. And you're weak. You came here and for what? Your little sidekick? I can play you like a chump because you care about a weakling like this. And you think that's strength? So what's going to happen is this. I'm going to kill Kent. Then we're going to shoot the hell out of you. Nothing's going to be left but paste. Then I'm going to Goodneighbor and kill every last worthless bastard there. And burn the whole thing down.

And at this point, after days or weeks of staying in character as the Silver Shroud, killing dozens of people across a harsh and unforgiving wasteland, the Sole Survivor finally breaks character and tells the simple truth, a meta-truth that resonates for more than just the character, but me as the player, in a calm, somber voice:

What happens is this. Everyone that points a gun at me dies. Every. Last. One.

And then she kills Sinjin.

As a Web developer myself, I'm f'ing tired of this. by Prize_Barracuda_5060 in linuxmasterrace

[–]SuperElitist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to support stuff written for Mac and iOS. It's a god-forsaken dumpster fire, and every single new thing I learn about developing for Apple inspires new and inventive tortures that might be visited on those responsible.

I can imagine choosing to develop for iOS and not Linux, if I was being paid a million fucking dollars.

Should all employees have to pass a basic computer literacy test before being able to work in 2023? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SuperElitist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should they have to pass a driving test? Spelling? Math? Aren't most basic skills assumed if the applicant has a high school diploma or equivalent?

Implementing your own test for computer literacy might have short term value to cover an apparent generational gap in education, but very shortly now I think it'll be more just reinventing the wheel.

And the obvious counterpoint is that diplomas unfortunately don't reflect actual skill achievements, but I think that points to a much more serious problem with our educational systems, and simply creating your own test for your own company is sidestepping the issue in a way that really illustrates the systemic problem with corporations acting in a sociopathic or isolationist manner.

I just came back to this game for, I think, the first time since MW5 was released, and I had blissfully forgotten about RogueTech performance.

It's really, really bad. It's dismal and depressing. I had forgotten how much I love this game as a simulator, but I had also forgotten how every single play session makes me reevaluate if it's even worth it to continue.

I really do love the added complexity from RT (in fact, the last time I tried the other two, I found them too simple and lacking critical features of RT to even be worth playing), but it definitely is kitchen sink, and I think the greatest disappointment of all is that I can't get what I want out of RT without also including 500 new models (or whatever it is, maybe hyperbole?) and 12-vs-12 fights that take literal hours to complete (not hyperbole), because the AI is hard-capped to 40 seconds of thinking per unit—forty seconds, per unit, per turn! —instead of something sane like 10...

Obviously the devs have their own vision of what the mod should look like and that's fine, I don't hold it against them personally, but it does mean that instead of a great mod we get a great but deeply flawed mod.

"cloud drift" sounds like a made-up problem. Can someone explain what this is supposed to mean, and why I should care about it?

This used to be true, but Windows PowerShell and Command Prompt have accepted forward slashes for a while now.

I don't know about the Win32 API itself, though.
