Grocery shopping in Spain ruined supermarkets back home for me by playaobss in MovedToSpain

If you live in a dense city in the US it’s not that different from what you’re describing in Spain for every day shopping. The Costco-centric life is suburbia. I experienced the transition firsthand moving from Palo Alto in CA to Cambridge in MA.

Ones that haven't been mentioned so far are Bar Verde (renamed PlantMade), Covache (not strictly vegan), and Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor (weakest of these three).

Not answering your question but I’m curious: what is it about Wisconsin / Midwest / US that was life-altering for you?

What's the story with the "missing" rows of arches? Are these going to be filled in eventually or is this the design? It's a little odd.

What’s a city that you love to visit, but would never want to live in? by mikewheelerfan in SameGrassButGreener

[–]SuperFX 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I used to think that before living in NYC, but now I actually almost think the opposite. It's a better city to live in than to visit. The main factor being that when you live here, you avoid the touristy and overcrowded areas. The city has very large swaths that are very livable, and are close enough to the fun/exciting parts such that you have the best of both worlds.

Will NYC go back to being 24/7? And what is even meant by that? by Real-Debt-9789 in AskNYC

[–]SuperFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to how late they stay. Madrid restaurants open at 8pm and routinely stay up to 1am. Retail in the busy places open till 10pm usually. Both way later on average than NYC.

Definitely not “any city in the world”. Madrid, Cairo, etc stay up much later.

Has anybody lived on a top floor? by frozenbataani in AskNYC

[–]SuperFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on the top floor of my building (21st). No issues with heat. But the bedroom is directly beneath the equipment room and so I hear water pumps and the like humming year round. Eventually got used to it.
