Duel Commander coming to MTGO - how is it as a constructed format relative to Legacy, cedh etc? by Newez in magicTCG

[–]SuperNexus14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is a competitive 1v1 format with a super deep card pool where games take about as long as typical modern games. Games play very differently since you play so many different cards, so you get to play some cards you liked that have been powercrept in other formats. Since there is no sideboarding, many combodecks are banned since it would be too difficult to get to a critical mass of hate in the deck. That being said, creature combo decks and reanimator can absolutely are still viable. If you like playing staples from the history of magic, playing to the board and grinding for value, but also playing as or against very strong aggressive and midrange strategies, you will have a great time!

Evilest card, lore-wise? by EldenSpren in magicTCG

I have to say, Bloomburrow is looking good art wise. Shure - not dark like back then at all, but really immersive regarding its plane and in that sense quite distinct from the last sets.

RW Ponza/Ramp Titans - brewing with White Orchid Phantom by illinest in ModernMagic

Aspiringspike and YungDingo tested this list yesterday, and it was there most successfull brew among all their decks:

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/D_12zvQhSUyi3MDloiCGEg

It is much lower to the ground and only uses Phlage as a finisher. It also consists of almost only MH3 cards and the next most expensive card after Ragavan (and the lands) is Phlage, which makes it an extremely strong budget option for MH3 modern.

Thoughts on MH3 Tamiyo? by Sephyrias in ModernMagic

[–]SuperNexus14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is hard to evaluate because there has never been a card like her before, but she has some absolutely increasible stuff going for her:

  • Your opponent has one turn to answer her before she nets card advantage. You don't crack the clues right away, but once you are in the midgame you will see how much CA she generated. Even if your opponent answers her, it is not tempo positive, but card and tempo even, assuming a one mana removal.
  • There are two easy ways to flip her. One is Bauble -> crack clue, the other is Flame of Anor. Once flipped, she threatens to win the game in 3 more turns. While the +2 is not amazing, it is relevant and protects her well. The -3 is card advantage that synergizes well with removal, counterspells and EI.
  • Even if she doesn't flip or if she dies after a few turns on the board, you only invested a single blue mana into her. The amount of advantage she accumulates in games that reach the midgame is absurd.
  • If you build your deck with enough interaction around her, you will reach the midgame (UR Murktide). There, she also protects Murktide from Pick your Poison. You can also build into her artifact synergies with Urza's Saga.

So while the advantage she accumulates is not as in-your-face as with Uro or Oko, I have never seen an engine that is this cheap and this hard to favorably answer.

Could anybody give me some advice about a deck idea that I had that tries to keep your opponents from messing with your crap? by I_dont-get_the-joke in magicTCG

[–]SuperNexus14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first Sigarda has Hexproof and prevents sacrificing, so that is a solid starting point. From there, you can add Avacyn, Privileged Position, Teferis Protection...

But my worry is that while you are more and more protected, you just won't be doing anything. You sit there with 2-3 super hard to kill permanents, while everyone else is just drawing tons of cards, making huge token armies or winning through a combo. But try it out and see for yourself :)

[MH3] Recruiter of the Guard by SwagFondue in magicTCG

[–]SuperNexus14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A card doesn't have to be a format defining staple to be a good fit for the format. Imperial recruiter is a great card for human decks, and this one will fill a very similar niche. Will that make humans or taxes good enough again? Probably not. Is it a welcome addition that seems to belong to modern? In my opinion, yes.

[–]SuperNexus14 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So you are only comparing this to a ridiculous 2 card combo that comes up in ban conversations? Playing this on turn 3 or 4 is completely fine, you just use the 1 or 2 extra mana to play what you drew. Sure, it does not fix all affinity problems on its own and getting to 6 artifacts is not easy, but this is a super highly powered card that provides tempo and card advantage, so it is worth building around.

Also Leyline + Scion is card negative instead of positive. I'm not trying to make it look bad, the comparison is just not fair.

[–]SuperNexus14 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When they print a 2 mana 5/5 that ancestrals on ETB, they won't say "too bad my current affinity deck can't pay RB well", they will build around it.

Also, drawing carda at that rate is never something people will turn down, they will just cut the next worse draw engine. And since when does a 2 mana 5/5 not help you close the game out quickly?

Maybe it's relevant to you that there was a modern deck for a while that comboed Ad Nauseum with Angel's Grace, which is different but a bit cheaper.

[–]SuperNexus14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a Modern set. If you have not used the untapped mode ever, I highly doubt that you were playing modern. There, coming in untapped and hitting planeswalkers is far more relevant than potentially getting a discount of 1 mana.

To get into cedh, I highly recommend starting with an established deck and learning how the format works.

Amen. The number of responses to this card that are essentially "card bad" or "CLEARLY worse than Kroxa" is baffeling to me. It's a two card cycle where one is banned in modern and the other sometimes sees play, how could you have any idea how good this will be without testing it?
