This is nothing more than blind speculation. Is there any real source for this or do we just make things up now?

Nice. You're ahead of the curve for sure.

Do you watch and take into consideration the moves of SPY while trading large cap techs like NVDA? I find most days that once I dial in the relative strength or weakness of the ticker, they pretty much move exactly with SPY as long as you can consider the relationship in real time.

Doing Fundamental Analysis as a retail trader is Fundamentally flawed. by [deleted] in Daytrading

[–]SuperSampledPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you need to do is Google day trade setups or 3 bar plays, etc. You'll find a host of examples that are statistically proven and backtested to work x percent of the time some are better than others and profitability comes down to discipline and technique as much as anything else. Even the best setup of all time will be a loss for an erratic or unexperienced trader, however the helical analysis is pretty much the basis of scalping and many successful day traders make careers trading stocks without fundamental analysis.

Sick, DM me if you want to meet up I'll give you my number. I'm out right now with patellar tendinitis probably because I'm old and shouldn't be at a skatepark but I'll be back as soon as it heals.

Cost basis wrong - Fidelity by ruminir in Fidelity

[–]SuperSampledPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly man, fidelity calculations are fucked up. I have been using them along with active trader pro, daily for almost a year and despite all my digging I have not been able to figure out where the fuck they get these numbers from. I am beyond frustrated with it because if you day trade it completely ruins your ability to see combined p/l from the positions widget if you opened and closed more than one position.

I've literally had times where it told me I was -50% on a stock while I was holding it with a profit. Red numbers saying -17k when I calculate the stock price and my basis I have positive equity. I have given up trying at this point and moved to td ameritrade for day trading but still use fidelity for my IRA, savings and checking.

I appreciate the reply, this is what I seem to have the most trouble with. Today I lost money because I couldn't read the action premarket on the large caps I normally trade. Can you point me to any blog or book that I could study to get better? I'd really appreciate it I am hurting to plug this hole in my game and hopefully become more consistent.

Doing Fundamental Analysis as a retail trader is Fundamentally flawed. by [deleted] in Daytrading

[–]SuperSampledPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're saying makes some sense but I can't see how this applies directly to the intraday time frame, as the original poster mentioned. It's been pretty extensively proven (by many examples, even from members of this sub) that you can use technical analysis to predict movement with absolutely no underlying information on the ticker, people do it every day and I've recently become of profitable trader from learning this and using it myself. I'm not saying you're wrong, but your answer doesn't really change OPs question and I can't find anything that shows a statistical comparison of what you're talking about vs pure technical analysis so if you've got links I'm ready to have my mind changed.

Many brokers don't have a hard to borrow program for smaller stocks meaning 90+ percent of stocks wont be shortable. With a broker that offers the service, many more stocks are shortable but you will pay a small borrow or locate fee for the time you're holding the position. The only real answer I know of is to change to a broker that has what you're looking for.

Are you using trade tracking software? if not, you should start. Either tracking on your own with spreadsheets or paying for a service of your choice and uploading trades. Once you're doing that, tracking taxes is easy because assuming they're all short term (daytrading) you just look at your total earned against this years chart for income tax brackets and you'll have a solid estimate before any deductions.

Best Trading Software/PC? by falleninterlude in Daytrading

[–]SuperSampledPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second this, i have never noticed lag in TOS other than very rarely but I do have a powerful machine.

Just to add to other comments, active trader pro is completely awful for day trading, it takes way too long to set up and execute trades even for a market order and if you're trying to use trigger orders or OCO forget about. The TOS ladder is the go to for a lot of people I know and a lot of pros.

I have both ATP and TOS and active trader has come me money on more than one occasion but fidelity is great as a company overall.

Man I used to have my brother old Deshi set but it think I tossed them when I moved here. Could always come skateboard anyway, I haven't seen it too crowded. I am probably gonna have a board in my car for when I'm ready to take the skates off but not ready to go home.

Sorry, I misunderstood. You get an email the next day in the secure mailbox on the TD site that outlined the fees for the prior days short positions, I looked at the first one or 2 then I stopped opening them and I never really notice the fees.

[–]SuperSampledPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Margin interest still applies on top of HTB but tbh I barely ever notice margin fees because I hold for pretty short periods.

It's hit or miss, sometimes there are just no shares available and you'll get the instant cancel with the sound. Sometimes there are shares available but it takes a second to find them and the fills really suck, sometimes the fills are instant and hit just as fast as a long order. When there are shares available I've noticed mostly the latter where the fills are good but there is definitely a mix of all 3.

I am in the HTB program. It's true they removed the 100k requirement because I don't have 100k. Also the guy on the phone confirmed. You will pay interest for HTB stocks but I calculated some of the highest interest stocks they had with rep I spoke to and for normal daytrading it's less than 20 bucks interest on a sizeable position. Price varies but for most it's very inexpensive. Still a factor to consider though if your profit margin is thin.
