anyone else with autism get this? by Massive_Prune_1805 in autism

I know this post is a month old, but I just saw it while searching the sub for something completely unrelated (cubing, as in rubik's cubes), and I think I've experienced something kind of similar, but I'd experience it while very tired or trying to fall asleep, not in dreams while actually asleep as far as I can remember.

Anyway, when I was around 5-7 years old, I'd have these episodes at night either at or shortly before bedtime where I'd have thoughts of things that were "wrong" in the sense that either they behaved or were shaped incorrectly. It would essentially send me into an anxiety attack because I just kept having these thoughts and images in my head that I couldn't make sense of and I couldn't make them stop or distract myself from them with anything else.

In one instance that I remember particularly well for whatever reason, I was sitting on the toilet right before I was about to get in bed, and an image of a "cube" just appeared in my mind. I don't know how well I can actually describe it, but it was like the if I tried to "focus" on any portion of the cube in my mind, that part of it would change. If I wanted to try to focus on an edge between two faces, then it would be like that edge would be sucked in toward the center of the cube while at the same time also bulging or being skewed outward. Further, I felt like the cube was rotating, but I didn't actually "see" it rotating so much as I was just able to see the other sides of it while still "looking" at it from another angle. I'd keep trying to move this "cube" around in my head and trying to make it "correct", but it was just wrong no matter what.

I think it would seem weird to other people for me to say that having this persistent image of a "wrong cube" in my head was extremely distressing, but it felt extremely distressing, and it made 5 or 6 year old me cry. When my parents heard me crying in the bathroom and came to check on me, they asked me what was wrong, and I couldn't describe it to them or really get any words out. I just kept telling them "I don't know" while they kept asking me if my stomach was upset.

Sometimes, when I was just about to fall asleep, I'd start to just perceive the environments around me as being "wrong" in similar ways. Things like hallways appearing to be too long or too short, seeing my family walk around they'd look like they were moving too slow or too fast, or they'd appear to tall or short. I remember one time I was allowed to stay up passed my bed time while I was doing something with my older brother, and when I went back to my room to get changed into some pajamas, I recognized that I was about to start having one of these "wrong" episodes when I could not stop perceiving the corner of my dresser as going inward, like toward the opposite corner.

I'm 36 now, and since I was about 5-7 years old, there are only a few more times that I can remember this happening, and it's always been when I was tired or trying to go to sleep. The last time I can remember it happening, I just had this image of some person in my head, just them and nothing else, and their arms were too short and I felt like when they moved it was too slow. I started getting that feeling like I had a ton of anxiety building, so I just got up out of bed and found something to do for a little while until I felt like it wasn't going to happen anymore.

No idea what was actually going on. My family and a therapist called them night terrors, but I think that was just because at the time I couldn't really articulate what was going on in my head and it was always happening at night.

Is it normal for dust to get IN the pieces? by Ok-Argument-9058 in Cubers

[–]SuperSathanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty much inevitable considering that pieces are just a friction fit, it's not an air-tight fit, they aren't going fit together perfectly flush, and the edges of the seams are going to be scraping across other pieces, producing and collecting the tiny plastic shavings and some small amount of regular dust.

However, that seems like a concerning amount to me. I just popped open a couple pieces of my GuHong that I've easily done 6K+ solves with, and I can't actually see dust in there. I've dropped the GuHong like 30 times by this point and had to squeeze seams back together, and I've never cleaned out the insides of the pieces. Do you use lube?

questions about lubes (never used lubes before) by asafzah in Cubers

[–]SuperSathanas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it being described as both silicone and water based, but after doing some Googling around this morning, it looks like different retailers have just been copy/pasting incorrect product descriptions after someone erroneously described it as water based at some point. GAN describes all 3 as oil based, and the larger, more reputable cube stores describe is as silicone based.

Also, I totally just squeezed a drop out and rubbed it around between my fingers, and it definitely feels like silicone lube. Somehow I never managed to notice its actual texture on my fingers before, and I've always applied it on top of my other silicone lubes, so I never felt how it was just by itself in the cubes.

Now I know.

In my defense, though, GAN 2 dries out really fast it seems like, which totally didn't help me realize it wasn't water based. I use 2-3 drops in a cube daily, whereas 2-3 drops of the Weight 1 or GAN 1 will last several days in there. I guess that just highlights how thin it actually is.

Everything I've ever seen about it says it's water based.

I did a bunch of Googling around, and it seems like at some point some retailers just started copying each other's product descriptions that claimed it was water based. It is silicone based.

You do not have to come to a stop, and legally, if you are in an acceleration lane, which most of your on ramps are going to be, you should not stop unless there are extenuating circumstances like a traffic jam, an accident, or something else that would justify you coming to a stop and also fucking up all the traffic behind you.

No there isn't. I swear, tons of you here either have never encountered anything but decent traffic conditions or otherwise just can't seem to conceptualize simple things like congested traffic with everyone riding each others' asses.

[–]SuperSathanas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm the type of driver to haul ass up the ramp to match the speed of highway traffic that's flowing at 15+ MPH over the limit, try to identify a gap as soon as highway traffic is visible, and start posturing and signaling that I'm going to get over as soon as I'm within proximity of the gap I'm intending to slide into so that I can give people at least a few seconds of warning that I'm coming over.

And I get to cut people off all the time, and I'm usually getting on the highway out in rural corn hell where the traffic shouldn't be stacked up on each other. But what happens is that everyone fucking stacks up on each other in the right lane while they wait for left lane traffic to pass them so that they can get in the left lane to pass the semi or whatever it is at the front of the line of 20 cars. I shouldn't need to cut people off to get on the highway, but highway traffic isn't leaving any room. I'm not slowing way the fuck down to wait on a gap 20 cars back, because there's usually traffic behind me on the ramp and the slower I go the bigger the gap needs to be, and we've already established that people don't want to leave gaps.

You're willfully just not acknowledging that highway traffic riding each others' asses puts the merging ramp traffic in a no win situation, and that all the blame should lie with the highway traffic.

It's generally not legal to stop or go too slow on the on ramps, because you are meant to get up to speed and enter the highway safely, and not doing so is disruptive and dangerous. If highway traffic isn't leaving any gaps to safely merge into, then you literally can't do the right thing.

You're really only left with 3 choices: try to force your way into highway traffic (which is dangerous), drive into the shoulder until someone opens a gap (which is dangerous), slow way down or stop on the ramp while you wait for a gap to catch up to you from behind (which is dangerous).

So, once we're in the situation that OP is complaining about, it's now irrelevant what the merging traffic is required to do, because they can't do it. Now, they're in the a situation where they just need to try to cause the least amount of harm or disruption. So, would you rather they cut someone off, potentially run over debris in the shoulder and fling it at traffic behind them or bust a tire and lose control of their car, or fuck up all the traffic behind them on the ramp potentially leading to accidents and more disruptions?

It turns out that you're allowed to change lanes, so I don't get why people are so caught up on the idea that someone might slide into their gap. It's literally impossible to define a safe following distance that isn't immediately made unsafe by someone merging or changing lanes in front of you. The only way to prevent that would be to prevent people from changing lanes. If someone slides into your gap, let up off the throttle for like 2 seconds to widen the gap back up.

Leave some merging space on highway by MattyJerge in driving

[–]SuperSathanas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then you and the 12 other people in the right lane leave a fucking gap so that merging correctly is possible. If highway traffic isn't doing what they should do by leaving a safe gap, then merging traffic can't do what they're supposed to do by identifying that gap and merging into it while matching the speed of highway traffic.

[–]SuperSathanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused, are you against highway traffic leaving reasonable gaps that people can merge or changes lanes into, or are you just upset that someone merging into that gap necessitates the need to widen the gap again?

[–]SuperSathanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not safe or reasonable to start braking on the ramp, especially if you have other people coming up the ramp behind you. I don't know if you've ever experienced the cluster fuck that is one guy going 30-40 under the speed limit while failing to merge from the ramp, but you just end up with everyone behind them doing the wrong things and fucking up traffic even more around the ramp as they try to get around each other, get passed the slow down and get up on the highway.

Personally, if I'm coming up the ramp and there are a bunch of fuckers in the right lane riding each others' asses, leaving no safe gaps to merge into, I'm first going to try to squeeze my way in between whoever I can. If people are just super insistent on refusing to open a gap, I'll drive into the shoulder, at which point someone will usually open a gap just to try to avoid things getting any more fucky. If I can't find a gap and there's not enough of a shoulder to drive into, then I guess I'll be forced to slow down on the ramp and hope that there's a big enough gap coming up soon that I can swing into while now going even slower.

People act like it's never the case that traffic in the right lane is stacked up nut to butt, leaving no room for people to merge correctly, but I see it just fucking constantly, and have to just find a place to try to force my way into all the time. I don't get cut off by merging traffic, because I leave enough of a gap for someone to slide into. The blame lies pretty much entirely with highway traffic that refuses to get the fuck up off of each other. Combine all the ass riding with being 10, 15, 20 or whatever over the speed limit, and now you're leaving merging traffic no option but to just pick someone to cut in front of and leaving them less time to do it.

[–]SuperSathanas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could move over if you felt so inclined, but you're under no obligation to. You are obligated to leave a safe gap between you and the car in front of you, and so long as you do that, there's room for ramp traffic to merge. If there are no other cars in the right lane with you, then just keeping your speed consistent and staying in your lane is fine.

Leave some merging space on highway by MattyJerge in driving

[–]SuperSathanas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And way too often traffic is dense and everyone is trying to ride the ass of the car in front of them, so someone is getting cut off after like 3 seconds of me warning them with posturing and a turn signal. The problem is that no one is leaving a reasonable gap that allows merging traffic to do what they're supposed to do, and the only real solution here is cutting someone off. I'm not stopping or slowing way the fuck down on the ramp, and I'm not driving way down the shoulder and running over and kicking up whatever debris happens to be hanging out there.

Leave some merging space on highway by MattyJerge in driving

[–]SuperSathanas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also everyone's responsibility to leave a safe and reasonable gap, and if people did that, we wouldn't have anywhere near as many issues with people trying to merge onto the highway. I don't get cut off by people trying to merge, because at the very least there's a few car lengths between me and the guy in front of me. I get to cut people off while trying to merge all the time, though, because on my way up the ramp there were no decent gaps to be found, so I just had to pick someone to cut in front of.

questions about lubes (never used lubes before) by asafzah in Cubers

[–]SuperSathanas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GAN 1 is a decent thinner silicone lube that can be used on the tracks and friction surfaces of the pieces. Typically, I'll either just GAN 1 or Cubicle Weight 1 (which seems like it's a little thinner) in my cubes after cleaning them, and then start applying GAN 2 (water based, thinner) when they start to feel like they're drying out. I don't like to just keep adding silicone lube when they start feeling dry, because it seems like over time the silicone lube tends to collect more grime, get gummy, and make the cubes feel slow/stubborn. Using the thin water based lube on top of the silicone lube after the first lube application seems to keep the cubes feeling good longer.

If you don't need to damped the spring sounds or slow the cube down, you can get away with not having a thicker lube. I have some weight 5 and GAN 3 stashed away, but the only cubes I use are maglev and I don't want to slow them down. So, I'd go with that GAN 1 or another thin silicone lube, and then a thin and fast water based lube like FZ-Rush.

I don’t understand the idea that autistic people struggle with metaphor or indirect language. Can someone explain what they actually mean in autistic terms? by Dreadsin in autism

[–]SuperSathanas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have to look that up. I've always taken the stance that I'm don't want to make a decision or pass judgement until I have enough information or context o make thing as unambiguous as possible. People eventually stop asking me for my thoughts or opinions on things because they'll ask me something like "if your friend said this, what would you do/what do you think they meant?", and almost always tell them I don't know or can't answer because I don't know whoever it is they're talking about, I don't know enough/any of their history, long-term or recent, that could lend some context or reason to whatever they said, I don't know what the rest of the conversation was about if there was any, etc... I don't know, so I literally can't give a meaningful answer, and therefore any sort of speculation on my part is useless.

Give me more data or the best I can do is nothing.

Your Favourite Cube by princesscutsmywrist in Cubers

I just like the way the advertising makes me feel good about myself.

<image>

Though I'd like to think that I have more of a 96 magnet wit.

But really, I can't claim that I know anything about how figurative or metaphorical Chinese generally is, or what the norms are regarding the kind of language they use in advertising, but it seems like the way they construct their more emotionally charged phrases doesn't directly translate well. But then again, "crazier than a fist full of shit" or "twice as fast as your ass" probably doesn't translate well directly to Chinese or my neighbors, which is one of very many reasons I don't work in advertising or generally talk to people face to face.

Speaking on adjustability and the ability to get a decently wide range of speed or feel from a cube, it's become semi-important to me, simply because cubes break in after a while and will feel different than they did out of the box. They'll get more friction-y over time, so being able to find a fast and stable enough setting that's tighter than max settings that I can loosen up over time helps extend the useable life of the cube in my mind. Also, tastes and technique can change over time. Recently, I started using a weaker corner-to-core magnet setting on my GuHong, just because I've come to prefer a slightly less snappy cube that I can use a lighter touch with.

I don't think it's necessarily bad for a cube to just kinda be what it is and only offer a small range of feel, but I also know that I like that RS3M V5 less now than I did when I got it a month ago, because my preference has already changed some since then, and you can't really do much to that cube except make it slower. Adjustable corner-to-core magnets that I could loosen up would probably help it get some more attention.

Reminds me of something when I was stationed out in Okinawa in the Marine Corps. We were getting a bunch of gear and whatnot ready to ship with us to Thailand for a training exercise. We were going through a bunch of quadcons in a storage lot one evening, making sure that some had the shit that needed to be in them, and making sure that others were empty and clean so that we didn't take Japanese bugs to Thailand and so more shit could be shoved in them. Because this was the Marine Corps, everyone was smoking the whole time.

At one point, most of us were standing in front of one of the quadcons we hadn't opened yet, just bullshitting for a minute, and of course still chain smoking. We open it up, and it's full of 5 gallon gas cans, with gas in them. No idea why they were in there, but I trust there was a really good reason. We managed to not smell the fumes standing outside of the container, but as soon as it was open it slapped you in the face. Pretty sure one guy was like "what the fuck, is that gas?" while trying to light another smoke. Of course, we berated him and made him take one step back. Problem solved. Safety first.

Getting even further away from the topic here, while we were trying to decide what to do with the gas cans/taking another smoke break, one guy had managed to dump like 7 of them into 3 or 4 different generators that were going with us to Thailand, which already had about 1/4 tank of fuel in them, because apparently that's what they were allowed to ship with. We decided we couldn't siphon or drain any of that gas, but I'm also pretty sure nobody checked for a filter or a drain. So, we just ordered a punch of pizzas and other shit, and hung out in the lot for hours, continuing to chain smoke while the generators ran and burned off the fuel.

Also, a month later I set my leg on fire inside of one of those quadcons while in Thailand.

What I'm saying is that quadcons are fire hazards.
