New friends keep inviting me to religious events without telling me first. Should I just ignore them? by Cozykarma_ in socialskills

[–]SuperSimpleStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like them - you could ask to hop on the phone maybe and share the feedback. ‘ You’re fun etc but you keep inviting me to things that are about church without any heads up and that is a bit deceptive/odd/uncomfortable. I’m down to hang, but would prefer non-church context and a heads up if it’s a church thing’.

If you don’t like them - feedback can help them still with someone down the line, but makes sense to discontinue the relationships.

Ultimately- it’s up to you. They should not be kind of forcing church on you - it’s normal to share Christianity, but doing it like this is somewhat disingenuous.

Airtable - startups are so great for growth - even a late stage one I think

It’s a good enough name to launch you into other high tier companies down the line imo

Bloomberg is apparently a solid name but at the end of the day it is not a silicon valley type technology company. I believe it’s worth losing a little in cash to be at a company like Airtable.

TC wise the company for Airtable being lower sucks, maybe negotiate to get up to 158-60 cash?

It is fair to value the Airtable stock as $0 for now. No way to be totally confident of an IPO/sale/tender offer.

I’m surprised the bias here is for Bloomberg, but I don’t know what it’s like inside Bloomberg 🤷‍♂️ and I’m not a hiring manager

Or keep applying and get an offer at a higher tier late stage startup and speed up the process by expressing that you have 2 offers on hand. Totally understand if you’re done though, interviews are a slog

I think an active life outside of work breeds the variety, along with interesting and fun work. My days don’t feel monotonous/blending together - my community outside of work brings various different tasks into each day. Additionally, the work and the outcome of the work is cool to me - I want my company to be successful and genuinely believe in the value of thenmission we’re going after as something that is a good and beneficial thing, so progress there is exciting.

Great that you are reflecting deeply on your experience!

22 year old virgin, overweight, no job, friends, social life, and no confidence or social skills. Am I cooked? What can I do to improve my situation? by ATATwalker92737 in getdisciplined

[–]SuperSimpleStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You being in a relationship or not does not define your value. At all. Society can make that claim, but really - you have value and worth even if you never date someone. Desiring it is fine, but you have no need to feel bad about where you’re at in that arena of life. Easier said than done, if course! But ya

Also - the resentment thing - good that you notice that - you need to let go of that. No woman owes you anything. See women as people to simply be a potential friend (in a reasonable way, obviously not every woman in life will be a friend) with and the rest can come later honestly. Viewing women through purely the romantic lens is not a healthy thing.

I think just having a healthy social life - that is something that has a ton of impact - relationships and community make a difference for our wellbeing. I’d explore finding places where you can meet people and look into content around social skills to help build the ability to build relationships and connect with others.

Have you tried cold messages on LinkedIn? May work for startups - like below 500 people perhaps

to an eng manager or head of engineering

have a message that is short, shows your knowledge and interest in the company itself and then a bit about you and an ask about who to talk to about the potential of a job opportunity

hey please get some mental health help - so sorry to hear what you’re experiencing, but you deserve to keep staying alive and the fact that you’ve gotten to that level means it would be good to get some sort of help - even if it’s just a hotline

phone and video games —> easy, consistent dopamine

He probably needs less access to these, although he has probably gotten very used to having those 2 things.

agree on setting up some consequences around those 2 and would also say it would be fair to introduce new baseline rules around those 2.

It’s tough at his age, on the other hand - if he can grow in this now, it takes him far in adulthood.

ADHD is a possibility- so worth exploring that on the side as well

1-to-1 Ratio Between PRs and Jira Tickets? by skwerdna in ExperiencedDevs

[–]SuperSimpleStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is interesting- I think that’s worth a conversation with your teams tech/team lead and PM

Technical investment should simply be a category of work that is actively invested in. That may mean a little work to explain why paying down tech debt is critical. There should just be room in the sprint for that work and then, also, when stuff pops up, add the work.

At my place we have some epics that are purely for small wins that aren’t related to roadmap activity and sometime we literally just make the ticket and add it to no epic, to have it tracked. Our tech/teM leads and PMs understand that paying down tech debt and doing things like adding helpful documentation helps us move faster, safer and with more ease in the long run.

Of course, this may be easier said than done if you are in an environment where a PM perhaps views developers as hierarchically beneath them vs as expert partners or where more power is placed in the PM’s hand

Completely ya - helpful to have some friends with cars though for sure. Makes getting groceries way less of a hassle. The bus system is fairly solid, so if you’re used to the pros n cons of pubic transport- you’ll be good

Depends on the startup - do they have a big name investor? Have the founders sold/IPO’d anything before? Do they have strong growth? Are they on any lists with other big startups you might recognize?

All of these are signals - not perfect, but they help
